PDF Studio vs Adobe Acrobat vs Stirling-PDF — Open-Source Adobe Acrobat Alternative

Looking for a free, open-source Adobe Acrobat alternative that keeps your documents private? This page compares PDF Studio against Adobe Acrobat and Stirling-PDF across price, privacy, text editing, redaction, OCR, and self hosting. Prices and licenses were checked against vendor pages on 2026-10-08; feature claims for competitors are still unverified, so confirm them with each vendor before deciding.

Price

PDF Studio is free and open source under MIT. Adobe Acrobat is a paid product: subscriptions (Acrobat Pro is listed at US$19.99/month on an annual, billed-monthly plan on Adobe's free-trial page; other plans and regions differ), plus a non-recurring 3-year Acrobat Pro 2024 license on Adobe's comparison page. Stirling-PDF is open core: its core is MIT-licensed and free to self host, while separately licensed proprietary directories and paid Team and Enterprise tiers exist.

Privacy: where your document goes

This is the sharpest difference. Adobe Acrobat uploads your files to Adobe servers when you use the web app or cloud features. Stirling-PDF runs on your own server, so your documents stay there. PDF Studio goes one step further: it runs entirely in your browser, so there is no server at all, not even yours. Open your browser devtools while you edit and watch: your document bytes never leave the machine. No accounts, no analytics on your documents, no tracking.

Text editing

Adobe Acrobat edits existing PDF text well, once you pay. Stirling-PDF is a broad PDF toolkit; check its docs for how far in-place text editing goes. PDF Studio rewrites the page content stream itself: the original text operators are deleted from the file and your replacement is written in as real vector text. Not an overlay, not a text box on top. The old bytes are gone.

Redaction honesty

This one deserves plain language. A lot of "free" tools offer redaction that is really just a black rectangle drawn over your text. Anyone can select the text underneath, copy it, or remove the rectangle. PDF Studio's redaction deletes the covered text from the file at export. If a tool cannot show you the text is gone from the file bytes, it is whiteout, not redaction.

OCR

Scanned pages need optical character recognition before the text becomes editable. Acrobat Pro includes OCR; Acrobat Standard does not. PDF Studio runs Tesseract on your device (English, Spanish, French, German), so scanned pages become editable text with no upload, ever.

Setup and self hosting

Adobe Acrobat is a desktop install plus cloud services. Stirling-PDF needs Docker on a server you run. PDF Studio needs nothing: open the live app in any modern browser, or self host the static build with one Docker command. The container serves static files behind nginx — your documents still never leave the machine running it.

docker run -p 8080:80 ghcr.io/kayforkind/navigatorslab-pdf-studio:latest

Which should you choose?

  • Choose PDF Studio if you want a free, private PDF editor with zero setup: open it in the browser, edit real text, redact for real, no uploads, no accounts, no caps.
  • Choose Adobe Acrobat if you need the full enterprise suite: certified eSignatures, deep Microsoft and cloud integrations, and support contracts.
  • Choose Stirling-PDF if you want a self hosted PDF toolkit for a team, with a much broader toolset (50+ conversions, OCR, redaction, compare, and more) behind one Docker container, and you are happy to run the infrastructure.

Honest caveats

PDF Studio does not do everything yet. Text editing needs a real text layer (scanned pages go through on-device OCR first). Replacement text uses Helvetica metrics, so on exotic embedded fonts the match is near identical, not glyph perfect. The on-device AI runs small models (0.5B to 1B): great at summarizing your document, not a frontier model. There is no real time collaboration and no cloud sync.
