Description

Adds the CTS, a conformance test suite for device integrations, under src/python/isaaccapture/cts/, and a Device Conformance section on the docs site that walks an integrator through it. A vendor records one scripted take with their device; the checker reads the MCAP and returns a verdict: pass, fail (the device is at fault), retake (the take was not performed as scripted) or insufficient_data. A browser panel replays the take alongside the results and packages it for submission.

This PR also carries the docs that were in #1241, so the CTS and its documentation are reviewed and merged together.

The suite

Two suites share cts/common:

  • Hand (cts/hand): core.HandPoseRecord from glove plugins or headset optical hands, recorded seated at a table with an eleven-step timed script. Marked as a preview: its tolerances are provisional until calibrated on glove recordings.
  • Full body (cts/full_body): core.FullBodyPoseRecord, recorded with a ten-step script paced by the performer.

Each suite has capture/, which records a take through TeleopSession; checker/, which judges it using only mcap and flatbuffers (no isaaccapture import); and oracle/, which generates synthetic recordings with known defects for the checker's tests.

  • Takes are stored under ~/isaaccapture-cts/<device>_<date>_<time>/.
  • Both replay panels have a package for submission button; the archive logic is shared in cts_common/panel/bundle.py.
  • Without aplay, the capture panel says so and records with on-screen cues only.
  • The checker CLIs exit 0-3 for the verdict, and 4 when the check could not run (a usage error, an unknown check, or a recording or labels file that cannot be read).

Outside cts/:

  • src/python/CMakeLists.txt and pyproject.toml keep cts/ out of the wheel; tests/python/packaging/test_wheel_contents.py asserts it.
  • .gitattributes tracks *.wav and *.mp3 through Git LFS.
  • The root README.md links the two operator guides.

The docs

A top-level Device Conformance section in docs/source/conformance/, five pages:

  • Overview: the six-step flow (integrate, set up, rehearse, record, check, submit), which suite to run, what the checker looks at, and what each verdict means.
  • Set Up the Tools: requirements, the per-suite tool environments, connecting the headset, troubleshooting.
  • Hand Suite (marked Preview) and Full-Body Suite: a pacing diagram; one card per scripted step with an animation, the spoken cue, what to do and what is checked; rehearsal tips, including a downloadable audio track for the timer-paced hand script; record, check and view commands with real checker output and viewer screenshots from the synthetic reference takes; troubleshooting.
  • Submit Your Results: package a take with the viewer's button, send it through the submission form, and describe it in the pull request.

Also: docs/tools/cts_media/ regenerates the step animations from each suite's oracle and the hand rehearsal track from the capture panel's cue audio; device/add_device.rst links to the new section; docs/AGENTS.md notes that the conformance pages name no device maker; custom.css wraps long check names inside the step cards.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Testing

Linux x86_64, Python 3.12, in the venvs each suite's setup_env.sh builds.

  • CTS suites: common 11, hand/checker 115, hand/capture 17, full_body/checker 192, full_body/capture 18, all passing. The oracle tests ran against fixtures freshly generated by both oracle/generate.sh scripts.
  • SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files.
  • Packaging: built the wheel with the CMake flow and confirmed it holds no cts/ entries; tests/python/packaging/test_wheel_contents.py passes. A scikit-build-core wheel built with this repo's [tool.scikit-build.wheel] settings also holds no cts/ files.
  • Both capture panels install against the 1.7 wheel and serve their page with --no-launch-cloudxr-runtime, with and without aplay on PATH.
  • Docs: make -C docs current-docs (sphinx-build -W --keep-going, as CI runs it) builds with no warnings; scripts/check_doc_refs.py passes on every new page; regenerating the media with the docs/tools/cts_media/README.md commands reproduces the committed GIFs and MP3.

Checklist

  • I have read and understood the contribution guidelines
  • I have run the linter and formatter with SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files
  • I have made corresponding changes to the documentation
  • I have added tests that prove my fix/feature works (or explained why not)
  • I have signed off all my commits (git commit -s) per the DCO

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request adds shared CTS infrastructure and separate hand and full-body capture and checking workflows. The checkers read MCAP recordings, apply signal and device-specific checks, and produce reports. Capture tools record scripted takes and label sidecars. Oracle tooling generates and verifies synthetic fixtures. The changes also add setup instructions, panels, tests, WAV audio assets managed by Git LFS, and exclusions that keep CTS files out of staged sources and packaged wheels.

The new conformance tooling is excluded from the packaged wheel, so these issues do not affect product users. Two small fixes are still recommended. Environment setup should stop when the generated schema does not match the repository copy; today it continues and reports the environment as ready. The hand label audit should always show its alignment check results, including when no recorded sample carries a timestamp. The change is otherwise ready to merge.

…rations

Adds the CTS under src/python/isaaccapture/cts/. A take recorded with a
device is checked from its MCAP and gets one verdict: pass, fail (the
device is at fault), retake (the take was not performed as scripted) or
insufficient_data. A browser panel replays the take beside the results.

Two suites share cts/common: hand (core.HandPoseRecord, an eleven-step
timed script, a preview until its tolerances are calibrated) and full body
(core.FullBodyPoseRecord, a ten-step script paced by the performer). Each
has capture/, which records through TeleopSession; checker/, which depends
only on mcap and flatbuffers; and oracle/, which generates synthetic
recordings with known defects for the checker's tests.

cts/ stays out of the wheel (src/python/CMakeLists.txt, pyproject.toml,
tests/python/packaging/test_wheel_contents.py), the spoken cues are tracked
through Git LFS, and the root README links the two guides.

cmp ... && echo did not stop the script under set -e, so a mismatched .bfbs
still ended in 'env ready'.

The hand panel gets the full-body panel's "package for submission" button.
Both build the archive with cts_common.panel.bundle; each suite supplies its
result groups and per-frame series, and the full-body archive is unchanged.

The verdict also depends on cts_common, so a modified shared package now
marks tool.dirty as well as a modified suite package.

…cannot run

The capture panels check for aplay at start-up. Without it the page says
so and how to install it, and a take records with the on-screen cues only;
pacing still comes from the WAV lengths.

The checker CLIs exit 4 with a one-line error when the check could not run:
a usage error, an unknown check, or a recording or label sidecar that cannot
be read. Exit codes 0-3 keep meaning a verdict.

Adds a top-level "Device Conformance" caption with five pages that take an
external integrator from a working plugin to a submitted take: an overview
(the process, the two suites, what the checker reads, verdicts), tool setup,
the hand and full-body suites (every scripted step as an animated card,
pacing diagrams, record/check/view commands, troubleshooting) and
submission, whose channel is left as a marked placeholder.

The step animations are rendered from each suite's oracle by
docs/tools/cts_media, because the docs ship no JavaScript; the same tool
builds the hand rehearsal track from the capture panel's cue audio. *.mp3
joins *.wav under Git LFS.

…animations

- Submit: takes go through the submission form (pull request link plus
archive) instead of the placeholder; the archive stays out of the public
  pull request.
- Audio cues are optional: the capture panel shows each cue as text, and
speakers on the workstation are only needed to hear them.
- Overview: the suite cards name no products, the macOS note and the
advisory-check footnote are gone, and the verdict ladder says "Any FAIL".
- Hand animations: the flat steps are still frames; pinches close over 1 s
and fingertips meet from apart before the hold; the view circles the
fists and swings around the pressed palms from the performer's side.

Takes now land under ~/isaaccapture-cts, and the hand viewer packages a
take for submission the same way the full-body one does, so the Submit
page describes one packaging path for both suites instead of the hand
checker-and-tar commands.

The hand, full-body, setup and submit pages named specific gloves and
mocap backends in prose, commands and example takes, which reads as an
endorsement. The examples now use a fictional Glove X and Suit X, marked
as placeholders; headsets stay named because every take runs on one.
docs/AGENTS.md records the rule for these pages.

- Retake the hand viewer screenshot so it shows the Submission folder.
- Submit: the viewer offers the archive as a download link to click; quote
  its name and SHA-256 prefix in the pull request; one form per archive;
record from a pushed commit with the CTS unmodified, since we re-run the
  checker at that commit.
- One wording for where a take goes (the form, for your pull request).
- Hand: what to do without speakers, the plugin-not-found row,
--wrist-source, and the viewer's printed address.
- Setup: a troubleshooting row for the missing cryptography package; the
overview lists aplay and a Google account.
- cts_media README: how the screenshots and diagrams are maintained.

A clone whose hooks pre-commit installed has no LFS pre-push hook, so GitHub declines the push until `git lfs push` has uploaded the objects.

@nv-jakob your open points from #1241 are carried over here, since its docs are now part of this PR:

  1. Palms-together animation: the fingers should be more parallel instead of the fingertips converging on one point, since overlapping tips would suggest wrongly calibrated hands. (comment)
  2. docs/source/conformance/setup.rst: make the checker setup a single src/python/isaaccapture/cts/full_body/checker/setup_env.sh [--panel] line. (comment)
  3. Whether the pages should explain why each pose is performed. (comment)

Replies will follow here.

- The full-body viewer prints the port it bound, not the one requested.
- Both capture environments install cryptography, which the CloudXR WSS
proxy needs to create its certificate.
- Full-body record.sh rejects an option given as the first argument
instead of creating a take named after it.
- Both capture panels print the address a headset opens when they listen
  on all interfaces.
- The hand oracle's palms-together pose keeps the fingers straight, so the
fingertips of the two hands no longer meet.
- READMEs: body-tracking setup is described without claims about a
headset's activation status, paths follow the moved docs pages, the
product is Isaac Capture, and several statements now match the code.

Links follow the moved pages, the product is Isaac Capture, each suite's
environments set up in one line, and the troubleshooting rows match the
fixed code. Long check names wrap after "." and "_" instead of mid-word,
through a small HTML-only extension. The palms-together animation is
redrawn from the corrected pose.

Thanks @nv-jakob, addressed in 0cbc869 and c581226:

  1. Palms together: the reference pose now keeps the fingers straight, so they run parallel and the tips of the two hands no longer meet; the animation is redrawn from it.
  2. setup.rst: one line per suite, checker/setup_env.sh --panel && capture/setup_env.sh. Recording needs both environments, and the capture one reads takes through the bindings the checker script generates, so the checker runs first.
  3. Why each pose: agreed it would help; leaving it for a follow-up.

From your list:

  • Links to moved pages now point at their new locations.
  • "Isaac Teleop" is now "Isaac Capture" where it meant the product; `
  • The troubleshooting workarounds are fixed in code instead: the full-body viewer prints the port it bound, and the capture environments install cryptography.
  • The body-tracking text no longer describes a headset's activation status; it links to the Body Tracking page.
  • Long check names wrap after . and _ instead of mid-word.
  • A batch of smaller accuracy fixes across the pages and READMEs.

Could we split this into three PRs to make review and rollout more manageable?

  1. Shared CTS foundation — cts/common/, packaging exclusions, and shared test setup.
  2. Hand CTS — hand capture, checker, oracle, tests, and the corresponding operator docs/media.
  3. Full-body CTS — full-body capture, checker, oracle, tests, and its docs/media.

Please prioritize Hand CTS after the shared foundation: we are ready to try it out immediately with Manus / Wuji / BrainCo, so it would be useful to unblock that independently of the full-body work.

Both suites already depend on cts_common rather than on each other, so the hand and full-body PRs can each build on the foundation. Keep each suite’s tests and docs with its implementation, and stage shared docs/media tooling so each PR works without requiring the other suite.
