Investigate performance improvements

Performance Analysis Complete

I profiled the import performance and identified the key bottlenecks:

Import Time: ~16 seconds (first import with cold cache)

Time Breakdown (from profiling)

1. uprate_parameters: 13.3s (46%) - Dominant bottleneck

   • Processing ~1M parameter lookups via get_at_instant calls
   • Repeated instant/period conversions (3M calls, 2.9s)

2. YAML Parsing: 4.2s (15%)

   • Loading 3,111 YAML files
   • No caching of parsed parameter trees

3. Variable Loading: 4.3s (15%)

   • Dynamic import of ~3,349 Python files
   • Each file loaded with importlib + hash computation

4. Parameter Operations: 2.1s (7%)

   • backdate_parameters (2.1s)
   • homogenize/interpolate/propagate (<2s combined)

5. Other: 4.9s (17%)

Optimization Opportunities in policyengine-core

High Impact (save 5-8 seconds):

1. Cache parameter tree to disk - Serialize the fully-processed ParameterNode tree (post-uprating) to pickle/msgpack. Validate with version checksums. Could save 3-5s on subsequent loads.

2. Optimize uprate_parameters - The bottleneck is repeated parameter(instant) calls inside nested loops. Options:

   • Batch instant lookups
   • Cache intermediate uprating results
   • Pre-compute uprated values at build time

3. Lazy-load parameters - Load parameter subtrees on-demand rather than at import time

Medium Impact (save 2-4 seconds):

4. Cache variable metadata - Generate a registry file during package build with variable metadata (name, type, dependencies) to avoid dynamic imports

5. Optimize instant/period conversions - Already improved in recent commits, but still 3M+ calls. Consider:

   • Larger LRU cache (currently 10k)
   • Avoid string conversions in hot paths
   • Use integer timestamps internally

6. Pre-process parameter YAML - Convert YAML to faster format (JSON, msgpack) at build time

Note: Recent commits (8a4dfbb, 8b9663c) already added caching that improved performance ~40%. The remaining low-hanging fruit is parameter tree caching and further uprating optimization.

Recommendations

1. Quick win: Implement parameter tree caching (similar to SimulationMacroCache pattern already in codebase)
2. Medium-term: Profile uprate_parameters in detail to identify specific optimization opportunities
3. Long-term: Consider lazy-loading architecture for parameters and variables

I can implement any of these optimizations. Which should I prioritize?

I've optimized the uprate_parameters function and created PR #416.

What I did

Yamlium investigation: Yamlium claims to be 3x faster than PyYAML but lacks API compatibility and clear benchmarks. Switching would require significant refactoring with unclear benefits, so I focused on the main bottleneck instead.

uprate_parameters optimization: Implemented batching of parameter lookups to reduce repeated function calls:

1. Standard uprating path - Pre-compute all instants and batch lookup uprating parameter values into a cache, eliminating repeated uprating_parameter(instant) calls in the loop

2. Cadence uprating path - Pre-compute all calculation dates and batch all get_at_instant calls into a cache

Results

• ✅ All 452 tests pass (including all 15 uprating-specific tests)
• ✅ No behavioral changes
• ✅ Reduces function call overhead from ~1M parameter lookups identified in profiling

This addresses the 46% of import time spent in uprate_parameters. The optimization maintains identical behavior while eliminating redundant lookups and instant/period conversions.
