create_sidecar_files.py strips global attributes (provenance) from geolocation files?

I haven't used create_sidecar_files.py on VIIRS IMG data myself, but in looking at the sidecar files already computed by others, I don't see the global attributes of the underlying geolocation file. At the very least, some of this should be forwarded to the sidecar and the sidecar processing step should be added to the file's history/provenance as is part of the CF Metadata Convention.

100% agree. We have not really tried to produce production-grade sidecars so far. Up until now, we were just happy to pull out SIDs from somewhere. Certainly, something we need to address in the future. In a dream world, I'd like to see STARE sidecars as a first-class citizen product, used as an alternative to, and distributed alongside the standard geolocation products.

I.e. a world in which one could access

• VNP03MOD* (standard geolocation for VIIRS for moderate resolution)
• VNP03MODS* (STARE geolocation for VIIRS for moderate resolution)

alongside any observation data.
