PDF page loading indicator only appears partway through loading

I'm testing on https://www.alphaxiv.org/pdf/2608.23189v1 which takes a long time to load, I assume the images are high resolution or something. The space past the first page is initially completely blank and noninteractive (I can't scroll down). Only after a few seconds does a spinner appear.

Yep, we're switching to avif tiny thumbnails for paper loading. Mobile experience needs some work but android version is coming soon so will start to push for that instead of hyperoptimizing the website for mobile.

My bug isn't that it loads too slowly it's that the loading indicator only exists for part of the loading process

Oh those are the pdf.js loading indicators not something we do, we could fake them I guess

Issue is we don't know how long the pdf is so faking them kinda sucks
