+**Important note**: I am not trying to use this article as a click bait. This really happened to me and it may happen to you. I am not trying to scare anyone or share panic. Point of this article is to provide practical advice on how to stay safe in dangerous situations during vacations.

+I've decided to write down after returning from UAE emirates vacation in 2026 March, however due me being busy and actually taking the time to write things down and actually making a good blog post this took a while (hence the delay release this post).

+I was very lucky to get home safe with no injuries or financial damage. It was a very nervous vacation but the worst part was not the drones or rockets - it was the unknown. Being in "limbo land", as I've learned from my British friends who were stuck there as well. Now I've decided to write down things I wish I knew and share my experience, hoping it can help someone someday if they find themselves in the same or similar situation.

+Everything I describe below comes directly from this experience. Some of it I did right, some of it I wish I had known before boarding that plane.

+## Before You Travel
+
+Unfortunately we live in a dangerous world and the situation is getting worse in 2026. We already have conflicts in Venezuela, the Middle East, and Mexico. These are countries I would recommend staying away from, at least until things stabilize. There are also countries like Cuba which are in a precarious state.
+
+It makes me sad that the number of countries one can safely visit is shrinking - but that's exactly why preparation matters.
+
+### Research the Geopolitical Situation
+

+### Register with Your Government
+
+- Register to a government program for citizen protection abroad - in our country the system is called DROZD

+### Pack a Survival Kit
+
+- Medication - when things go down, you may not have access to pharmacies, especially if you need insulin or an inhaler
+- Portable charger and a universal power adapter (MUST)
+- Copies of all important documents - or at minimum, photos on your phone
+- Cash - it's super handy and you never know when you'll need it when digital payments go down
+
+### Get Insured
+
+Make sure you have travel insurance that covers **emergency evacuation** and medical treatment. This is non-negotiable for high-risk destinations.

+## While You're There
+
+### Know Your Exits
+
+Take a picture of the hotel evacuation map and know the exits. When I was stuck in the Abu Dhabi hotel, I photographed the evacuation plan - in case a drone would hit the building, I'd know exactly where to go.
+
+Always identify the nearest exits in any building, vehicle, or public space. Have a mental plan for evacuation.
+
+### Secure Your Communications
+
+- **Local SIM card** - buy one for reliable connectivity. I was actually lucky since the cell company gave me an extra 5GB free, but I still used hotel wifi most of the time
+- **VPN** - get a VPN provider or make your own server. I'm an IT person and I have a router at home running a WireGuard server. Thanks to that, WhatsApp and other messaging apps worked perfectly for me, while for others they didn't work well because there were firewall rules blocking these services

+### Monitor the Situation

+## Final Thoughts
+
+Dangerous vacations are not inherently foolish - many of the world's most beautiful and culturally rich places carry some level of risk. The difference between a disaster and an adventure often comes down to preparation. Stay informed, stay humble, and stay safe.
