The old site did its job, but it was a bit boring - unlike the Borg!

Now a new borg themed site design is live, but still a bit hidden:

If you review the design and content, please put constructive feedback below.

Compatibility: tried it with Firefox, Chrome and Safari - worked for me. The background stuff uses WebGL, so that won't work with links/lynx/w3m, but guess you can still read the content.

Accessibility: some tests were done, some fixes were made. Somebody could do more tests, try it with a screenreader.

That looks very clean and polished. I’ve not much constructive feedback to give (which is a net positive), the thing I immediately thought of is the amount and brightness of things happening on screen; maybe it would possible to tone down the brightness/lightness/hue of the animated blocks down a little, so they don’t have the same brightness as the scrollable content and blend a little more into the background.

3rd party feedback, keeping it here:

• font size top navigation too small
• to little contrast between big cube and text in front of it
• maybe change "stop" button into a "start" button? some people don't realize there is a stop button or that it would stop the animation

Maybe the “start” or “stop” button should include the word “animation” or something like that; to make it clear what is being started/stopped. It would also be great if the website would respect the “reduce motions” settings of operating systems (or desktop environments) and, if enabled, have the animations stopped by default.

To me the background animation distracts too much and makes focusing and reading the content of the website more difficult but I am biased as I like more simple websites (like the current Borg website). In any case, I personally did not find it amusing that the website struggled on my Pixel 6 phone (while usually I never have any issues). So I would just remove that animated background :)

Updated site now starts in "stopped" (and faded out) state of the background animations.

It is very much better now. However, I can see that when I scroll down on the website I get this "lagging" effect like my phone is struggling. Just a consideration for maybe having some "lighter"(?) animations for mobile devices? I am using Firefox mobile on a Pixel 6. Good work on the website!

Updated again.

Now the start button got the obvious "Engage!" label and it first gets to warp speed for a while before meeting the borg cube. The stars now are round, not square.

• On mobile the title is hidden by the nav bar, even if I scroll up it just snaps back.

The new site design (based on index3.html + some minor changes) is now live for everybody.

The old site is still available via /index_old.html, but will likely not get updated any more.
