Is there a roadmap for this? Right now it's skip, but since build backend is available it would be cool to get the python community plugged in.

I'd imagine lots of toolchain pieces are coming together elsewhere first.

This biggest missing piece was python itself, but that is solved now: conda-forge/python-feedstock#849 :)

looks like conda-forge/rsync-feedstock#41 will also be needed. Though https://github.com/conda-forge/sed-feedstock also has no Windows builds and so will need a Windows equivalent, but I'm sure that's already well known to the feedstock maintainers.
