At this point I don't know how to get access to dockerhub configured.
A link to the right dockerhub docs would improve the README

Am I correct in thinking that pushing to dockerhub is not necessary for a local build/run of the dashboard?

I.e. the README says to push to dockerhub because you are building locally and running on a separate server, correct?

Maybe better to have local and remote build instructions separate.

Yes correct. You don't need dockerhub if you just doing this locally. We should have better documentation for that.
