Dead Project?

We haven't seen a commit in 8 months and haven't seen a release in over a year. Is this project dead?

The longer this goes unmaintained the less comfortable I feel running it in my environment.

Same actually. I figured i might start a spin off as no updates have been made in a while and i would like to see some UI changes atleast (list instead of card and so on). Im pretty confident i will be able to do it as i have many years of experience in web development using HTML, CSS and PHP and are just starting a journey with C# (making an internal application for managing and running application scripts (PS1) located on a local server for work).

So, ill see how that goes or if i ever get going.

I have been looking at other solutions too, but none of them seams to be a replacement.

NetLock RMM is the closest i could find, but im still not happy with it, updating the Netlock RMM web server and console made me rethink the possible use case of that solution as the docker setup was way over my knowledge to setup behind a reverse proxy in my homelab.

Remotely have been running in my homelab for years by now and since it seams dead or atleast unmaintained in it's current form (fully understandable from Immense) as Open Source can be costly to maintain and develop as a company.

BitBound made some great work to remotely and it looks like he started up another project similar to, but not a clone of remotely that did not gain as much attention.

If i knew about remotely in the previous years (still maintained by BitBound) I most likely would have made an effort to donate to him for the awesome work, hours and love he put in to this project.

The last commit removed the line from the README that they are looking for people to help with development.

bitbound has another Remote Control project they are working on. Maybe that's where the attention is currently.

I'm confident in saying this project is dead at least by the original creator. It looks like it's been scrubbed from the readme, but the creator was hired by Immense for his work on this project (the two weren't originally associated). They had originally said development would continue for Remotely and features would only be integrated into Immybot, leaving Remotely's open source license and availability to the public intact. I don't blame the creator, this project is awesome and I'm not surprised a company was willing to pay for his talent. I just wish there was some communication with the community so people aren't left using an abandoned project.

@mattish91, I've been looking for replacements as well and am in the same boat as you. Nothing has matched Remotely's responsiveness for unattended access. I haven't played around with Netlock RMM (I use TRMM), but I've been keeping an eye on it. If you ever do end up forking this repo to make updates, I'm more than happy to help with any networking or compiling issues. I'm more of a novice when it comes to HTML and CSS, but I'm very comfortable with docker and networking if you ever need some help.

Thats awesome! ill make sure to let you know when im ready to start testing things out. (repo is already forked) just need to experiment with some Ajax and see if i can maybe change the layout. I also found ControlR made by bitbound taht also looks prommising but for now is missing the entire script library, it totally looks awesome tho and i did manage to test it my self, it does work flawlessly, even more responsive than Remotely :)

Maybe that's what we should be looking at?

@mattish91 Just spun up the docker compose for ControlR to test myself, I've seen the project before just never got around to it. I wasn't able to get remote control working behind cloudflare proxy, kept getting an error failed to request session from agent. Not sure if you tried setting that up on your end and ran into the same issue, I'll probably put in an issue if I can't figure it out. Performance wise, I seem to be getting about the same responsiveness as Remotely, which is great. The file\terminal features are also great, it's definitely usable albeit on the uglier side when it comes to styling. As long as ControlR is being maintained and updated I think it's probably the best bet to move to

I've been wanting to reply to this thread for a while, but I was waiting for the right time. And the time has come!

As others have mentioned, ControlR is indeed my sole focus now. And just earlier today, I announced a two-year sponsorship from Devolutions that will allow me to work on ControlR full-time!

If you're interested in supporting me on this journey, now is a great time to hop aboard. I recently updated the backlog with a bunch of features, many of which I'm explicitly looking for feedback.

Feedback, suggestions, and votes are welcome on all items, regardless of the feedback label. Votes are important as they'll help me prioritize features.

@mattish91 , I have an issue open for reimplementing the scripting functionality, so that will be coming soon.

I'm really excited about the opportunity to give one of my projects my full attention, and I'm very optimistic about how far I can get with two years of guaranteed runway.

Development for remotely has stopped, a new project is appearing and is under active development, with more focus on security and over all usability.

I would highly recommend you check it out.
