For 10+ years there have been several 3rd party services offering download-gate functionality via Soundcloud's API. The service would O-Auth the user, like/comment/repost on the user's behalf, and provide a free download of the song in exchange for the engagement. This has played a major role in building fanbases for thousands of artists across the globe.
As of this week, it seems that all of these 3rd party sites have had their API integrations paused. Artists are seeing a major drop in engagement across the platform.
I've been reviewing recent releases as well as the API documentation and I'm honestly even more confused. The relevant endpoints still seem to exist, and on May 18 2026 there was an announcement that the API would be more accessible than it was before— allowing any Artist Pro user to obtain an API key.
The 3rd party services have not been able to provide any further explanation other than their integration has been paused, and they are working on bringing it back.
I'm hoping someone from the Soundcloud API team could provide some more clarity on the issue. Why were these integrations paused? Are they coming back? How are these integration pauses justified while simultaneously making the API more accessible?
I can say with 100% certainty— if these integrations are not resumed, it's going to push artists away from SoundCloud. These integrations made posting to Soundcloud extremely productive for artists. Downloads translated directly to promotion and visibility. The lack of engagement will reduce the quality of the recommendation algorithm. Soundcloud will be reduced to a plain audio-hosting site, while Bandcamp and Subvert at least offer more attractive monetization options.
