Closes #822

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added improved server-timezone handling for incremental database reads.
    • Automatically detects the database session timezone when no explicit timezone is configured.
    • Supports explicit timezone settings with a workflow-level default fallback.
    • Applies the appropriate timezone when filtering datetime-based offsets across supported databases.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved consistency and accuracy of incremental datetime queries when database and workflow timezones differ.
    • Added validation for unavailable or invalid database timezone values.

…, falling back to the default timezone if detection fails.
… extract common conversion logic into SqlGeneratorBase
…timestamp and epoch seconds, and log epoch millis in timestamp conversions

Walkthrough

JDBC SQL generators now detect server timezones and use them when formatting datetime offsets in incremental queries. Reader configuration separates explicit and default timezones. Readers pass the resolved timezone for datetime offsets.

Changes

JDBC Incremental Timezone Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timezone contract and shared formatting
pramen/api/.../sql/SqlGenerator*.scala, pramen/core/.../utils/TimeUtils.scala, pramen/core/.../mocks/SqlGeneratorDummy.scala
The SQL generator API adds timezone lookup and timezone parameters. Shared code resolves server timezones and formats datetime offsets with the supplied timezone.
Dialect timezone queries and offset SQL
pramen/core/.../sql/SqlGenerator*.scala
Database dialects add server-timezone queries. Datetime offset predicates use the supplied timezone.
Reader timezone selection and query wiring
pramen/core/.../reader/*, pramen/core/.../bookkeeper/OffsetManagerUtils.scala
Reader configuration stores explicit and default timezones separately. Readers detect or fall back to a timezone and pass it for datetime offsets.
Validation of timezone behavior
pramen/core/.../tests/sql/*, pramen/core/.../tests/utils/TimeUtilsSuite.scala
Tests update timezone-aware API calls and cover timestamp parsing, DB2 offset conversion, and generated SQL behavior.

Explanation

The description follows the required template. It includes the Overview, Release Notes, and Related sections. The Overview section is empty, but the release note and issue reference clearly describe the change.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title clearly identifies the main change: automatic detection of the JDBC session time zone for incremental offsets with the datetime type. The wording contains a minor grammatical issue but remains specific and understandable.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #822 requires automatic JDBC time zone detection for incremental ingestion with datetime offsets. TableReaderJdbcBase uses configured server.timezone when present. Otherwise, it calls sqlGen.getServerTimezone(connection) and falls back to defaultTimeZone on failure. JDBC readers pass the resolved time zone to incremental SQL generation for datetime offsets. Dialect queries, timestamp parsing, fractional seconds, and SQL generation have automated test coverage.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (8 skipped: 8 unsupported.)

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The pull request expands the getMinMaxValueFromData documentation in OffsetManagerUtils.scala. The documentation covers Kafka partition aggregation, offset parsing, validation, parameters, and return values. It has no connection to JDBC time zone detection or datetime offset SQL generation.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated OffsetManagerUtils.scala documentation change or move it to a separate pull request.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the public SqlGenerator API compatible on the support/v1.14.12 patch branch.

SqlGenerator is part of pramen-api. SqlConfig.sqlGeneratorClass lets users plug in their own implementations. This change breaks those implementations in two ways:

  • It adds the abstract method getServerTimezone(connection).
  • It changes the abstract signature of getDataQueryIncremental.

A custom generator compiled against the previous API fails in two ways:

  • Recompiling it fails because it does not implement the new members.
  • Loading an existing binary throws AbstractMethodError when the reader calls getServerTimezone or the 6-argument getDataQueryIncremental.

The same problem applies to subclasses of SqlGeneratorBase, which must now implement getServerTimezoneQuery. Their getOffsetWhereCondition(column, condition, offset) override no longer matches the new signature.

Add default implementations so that existing generators keep working and fall back to the configured timezone.

In SqlGeneratorBase, give getServerTimezoneQuery a default that throws UnsupportedOperationException. getServerTimezone then returns a Failure. Consider keeping the old 5-argument getDataQueryIncremental as a concrete overload that delegates with None.

Include connection acquisition in the timezone-detection fallback.

JdbcUrlSelectorImpl.getConnection retries the configured URLs, then rethrows the final failure. TableReaderJdbc and TableReaderJdbcNative pass Option(serverTimeZone) to incremental SQL generation, so this lazy value is evaluated on that path. Because acquisition occurs before the Failure(ex) branch, a final acquisition failure bypasses defaultTimeZone. Make acquisition failure enter the same fallback path.

Add reader-level tests for timezone selection.

TableReaderJdbcBase.serverTimeZone has separate explicit, automatic-detection, and detection-failure fallback branches. TableReaderJdbc and TableReaderJdbcNative use this value for incremental queries with DateTimeType offsets. Their current suites do not exercise incremental reads or configure server.timezone; the SQL-generator tests pass Some(testDefaultTz) directly. A regression in reader-level selection or propagation can therefore pass the current suite. Add focused reader tests for automatic detection, detection-failure fallback, and explicit server.timezone handling. This is separate from connection-fallback and API-compatibility coverage.
