Explain: a model-free Compare view for a Similar card (#236) - #242
Conversation
…ree (#236) A card's Explain (and `b2 similar NOTE --explain OTHER`) reads one note's place in the anchor's discovery field from the same computation that ranked the list, so an explanation can never disagree with the card: same rank, same z, same winning pair. - core: `discover` computes one field that `candidates` serves a prefix of and `explain` reads a row of; `Vault::explain_similar` adds the standing (ranked, past the list, linked, unembedded, not shortlisted), whole-note rank beside best-passage rank, the z population, every passage pair graded on the dots' yardstick, identical-text pairs, and shared neighbors. Row order and z unchanged. - cli: `b2 similar NOTE --explain OTHER [--json]`. - desktop: `explain_similar` command; a Compare view in the centre pane with a summary label, a where-it-sits strip (σ axis, key, "?" for the long account), side-by-side passages, and hand-offs to Open and Ask chat why. Keyboard-complete. - docs: quickstart, search-and-similarity, architecture. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds model-free explanations for Similar candidates. The CLI and desktop app expose candidate standing, ranking statistics, passage pairs, and shared neighbors. The desktop adds a Compare view with a population strip and passage comparisons. ChangesModel-free Similar explanations

…hat is true From the PR #242 review: - The standing counts the cards the list actually shows: min(limit, scored), so a small vault no longer reads "Card #2 of the 10 shown" beside a five-card list. - `similar --explain` says once why its pairs carry no grade (too few notes, or a vault indexed without the real model) instead of printing bare pairs. - The docs qualify "can't disagree with the list": at the same `--limit`. The desktop always passes the list's own; the CLI user is told to. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Closes #236. Part of #235.
What
Every Similar & unlinked card gets Explain beside Why? (and in the card menu, for the keyboard). It opens a Compare view in the centre pane, built only from stored data, no model call:
ui/src/explain.ts: Identical text first (the template case), then counts of passages at the ●●○ landmark.CLI twin:
b2 similar NOTE --explain OTHER [--json].Why it can't disagree with the card
discover.rsnow computes one field per anchor.candidatesserves a prefix of it andexplainreads a row of it, so the rank, z and winning pair are the card's by construction. Row order and z are unchanged (existing discovery suites pass untouched). A pair's z is its squared distance read against the same population as the card's z.Tests
crates/b2-core/tests/explain_similar.rs(13): served rows match rank/z/evidence; population; past the list; buried gem; linked; shared neighbors; identical text; unembedded candidate and anchor; not shortlisted; fake space ungraded; self and unknown notes. Falsified by breakingcentroid_rankandzin the engine.ui/src/explain.test.ts(labels, standing text, strip geometry, ticks, help copy),render.test.ts(escaping passages as text, focus ids, the "?" closed by default).tests/commonso both discovery suites share it.make cipasses.
