Summary

Implements an all-or-nothing contract for move operations: if a move fails after inbound link rewrites have been written, those rewrites are rolled back and the vault is left byte-identical to its pre-move state. This fixes GH #230, where a failed move could leave the vault with rewritten links pointing to a destination that was never created, and reindexing cannot repair such broken links.

Key Changes

  • New refuse_file_ancestor() check: Validates that no ancestor of the destination path is a regular file before any writes happen. This catches the GH Failed move rewrites backlinks before rejecting the destination, leaving broken links #230 scenario (moving under a file) before touching inbound files.

  • Refactored move workflow into two phases:

    • plan_inbound(): Reads all inbound files and computes rewrites in memory without writing anything. Fails fast if any file can't be read, while the vault is still untouched.
    • commit(): Applies all planned rewrites, creates destination folders, and performs the rename as one atomic unit. If any step fails, undo() reverses earlier steps in reverse order.
  • Transactional undo on failure:

    • Tracks each write and folder creation in a Done vector
    • If the rename fails, undo() restores original file contents and removes created folders
    • If an undo step itself fails (e.g., a file is now a directory), returns MoveIncomplete error naming the files that couldn't be restored, so the user can check them manually
  • New MoveIncomplete error type: Carries the vault-relative paths of files still holding a rewrite after a failed undo, allowing users to identify and fix broken links by hand.

  • Applied to all three move operations: move_note(), move_resource(), and move_dir() all use the same plan_inbound() + commit() pattern.

  • Recovery path for interrupted moves: If a move crashes between rewrites and rename (the one unguarded window), re-running the same move detects that rewrites are already done and completes just the rename, finishing the operation.

Implementation Details

  • The Rewrite struct holds a file's original and rewritten bytes, so undo() can restore them.
  • The Plan struct collects all rewrites before any writes, enabling the all-or-nothing property.
  • Folder creation is tracked separately from file writes so undo() removes only folders the move created, not pre-existing ones.
  • The rename is the last step in apply(), so once it succeeds the vault is final; any later failure (re-keying or re-projecting the index) leaves correct Markdown that b2 reindex can project.

Tests

Added comprehensive test coverage in crates/b2-core/tests/mv.rs:

  • a_move_under_a_file_is_refused_and_changes_nothing: Validates the GH Failed move rewrites backlinks before rejecting the destination, leaving broken links #230 fix
  • a_move_whose_rename_fails_restores_every_rewritten_file: Tests rollback of rewrites and folder creation
  • re_running_a_move_interrupted_before_its_rename_finishes_it: Validates recovery from the unguarded window
  • Similar tests for resource and directory moves
  • Unit tests for refuse_file_ancestor(), apply(), and undo() edge cases

Updated CLI and desktop error messages to guide users when MoveIncomplete occurs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Moves now check for invalid destinations and prepare link updates before changing files. If a move fails before completion, changes are rolled back where possible, including restoring rewritten links and removing newly created destination folders.
    • If some links cannot be restored, the error message lists the affected files and advises checking them and running b2 reindex.
    • Retrying a move interrupted after link updates can complete it without rewriting those links again.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified the move operation’s failure and recovery behavior.

A move rewrote inbound link text before renaming, with no undo, so a move
refused at the rename (a destination beneath a regular file) left backlinks
pointing at a path that never came to exist. Reindexing couldn't repair it:
it projects whatever the Markdown says.

The vault half of every move (note, resource, folder) is now all or nothing:
- the destination is refused up front when an ancestor is a regular file;
- every inbound rewrite is read and computed before the first write;
- the writes, the destination folders the move creates and the rename run as
  one commit that undoes itself, in reverse, if a later step fails.

An undo step that itself fails surfaces as Error::MoveIncomplete naming the
files still holding a rewrite, with messages in the CLI and the desktop app.
The docs now say what the guarantee actually is: all or nothing on the
vault, index repaired by reindex after the rename, and a crash between
rewrite and rename finished by re-running the same move.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Note, resource, and directory moves now plan inbound Markdown rewrites before writing. Rewrites, destination-directory creation, and renames use a rollback-capable commit. If restoration fails, the error identifies affected paths. CLI and desktop messages advise checking those paths and running b2 reindex.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f3de1

Note, resource, and directory moves now plan link rewrites first and undo their changes if a later step fails, which lowers the chance of a half-applied move. Two small follow-ups remain. One documentation sentence sits under the wrong bullet. When a move fails and B2 cannot fully undo it, the error that caused the failure may be missing from the logs. Neither issue affects vault contents, and the change is mergeable with these follow-ups noted.

This rabbit watched the links be planned,
Then saw each move commit as planned.
If files could not be put back right,
Their paths were named in plain sight.
“Check links, reindex,” I thumped with cheer,
And nibbled clover, calm and clear.

Keep the original failure on Error::MoveIncomplete.

If undo is partial, commit sends err to tracing::warn! only. It then returns Error::MoveIncomplete(unrestored) without the cause. The desktop log_internal logs err.to_string(). The CLI B2_DEBUG detail also uses err.to_string(). In both places, the text for a partial undo names only the paths. It does not name the I/O failure that started the rollback. If no tracing subscriber captures b2::mv, the root cause is lost. The desktop crate guideline says the full internal detail is always logged through log_internal. For this variant, that log does not carry the full detail.

Carry the source error in the variant. Also include it in the #[error] text, so every to_string() consumer logs it. User-facing messages still show only the paths.

-    Err(Error::MoveIncomplete(unrestored))
+    Err(Error::MoveIncomplete {
+        paths: unrestored,
+        source: Box::new(err),
+    })

In crates/b2-core/src/error.rs:

#[error("move failed and could not be fully undone: {} (cause: {source})", paths.join(", "))]
MoveIncomplete {
    paths: Vec<String>,
    #[source]
    source: Box<Error>,
},

Update the match arms to MoveIncomplete { paths, .. } in crates/b2-cli/src/main.rs and crates/b2-desktop/src/error.rs. Update their tests too.

Based on learnings: "propagate the original underlying error rather than masking it with a generic wrapper error from a later cleanup/restore step." As per path instructions for crates/b2-desktop/src/error.rs: "The full internal detail is always logged server-side to stderr (log_internal …)."

Error::MoveIncomplete now carries the failure that started the undo, shown in
its Display so the desktop's log_internal and the CLI's B2_DEBUG detail keep
the root cause; the user-facing messages still name only the paths. The
tracing warn it replaces is gone.

index-engine.md §8: the prefix-sharing guarantee returns to the write
amplification bullet it belongs to, out of the crash sub-bullet.
