feat: carry the signed-in user and tenant on telemetry, and send a final event on opt-out - #1501
Identity. When the machine is signed in to Altimate, every row carries user_id and tenant, and the user uuid becomes the App Insights user id. Anonymous rows keep the machine id. The identity is resolved once per stored credential through the users/me call and cached owner-only under a fingerprint of the credential. A changed credential, a sign-out or a 401/403 drops it. A failed lookup is retried after 60 s, and a stale answer is discarded. No email, hashed or not, leaves the client. Backend calls name the CLI version in a header.
Opt-out. When telemetry is disabled by environment or config, a machine that already has a machine id sends one final telemetry_opted_out event, then nothing. It carries the opt-out source and the cached identity. A marker next to the machine id is written only after the ingest endpoint accepts the event, so an offline launch tries again. Turning telemetry back on clears the marker.
Why
Web events are keyed by the backend user uuid and CLI events only by machine, so nothing joined a CLI session to its account. An opted-out machine also looks exactly like a client that stopped emitting. With the opt-out as its last event, the dashboards can count opt-outs and explain the silence after them.
How did you verify your code works?
Identity suite: resolution, caching, invalidation, retry backoff, stale-answer fences and cache file mode against stubbed endpoints. No email in any property.
Opt-out suite: the single event and its properties, nothing afterwards, no event without a machine id, the marker only after a 2xx, and the marker cleared on a normal init.
After merging main: typecheck clean, and the telemetry suites pass.
Cost side effects
None. The rows gain fixed-size properties, and an opted-out machine sends at most one more event. No model calls, queries or cloud resources grow with user data.

Resolve the signed-in user once per credential (GET /users/me, cached at
~/.altimate/telemetry-identity.json) and stamp user_id and tenant on every
event; the hashed account email is gone. Backend calls send x-altimate-client.

The changes add client-identification headers to Altimate requests and resolve telemetry identity from stored credentials. Telemetry events use the resolved user ID and tenant when available. When telemetry is disabled, the code can send one final opt-out event and record a local marker.
Altimate requests include a client-identification header. Telemetry identity loads credentials, requests and validates user identity, and caches results. Tests cover credential sources, cache behavior, and request outcomes.
Telemetry event properties and user tags use the resolved user ID and tenant when available. Identity refreshes track credential changes, and flushes retain the identity captured for each batch.
Opt-out event and marker packages/opencode/src/altimate/telemetry/index.ts, packages/opencode/src/altimate/telemetry/opt-out.ts, packages/opencode/src/altimate/util/machine-id.ts, packages/opencode/test/altimate/telemetry/opt-out.test.ts
When telemetry is disabled, the code can send a final event if a valid machine ID already exists. An accepted response creates a marker; enabling telemetry clears it. Tests cover send conditions, response handling, and marker lifecycle.

A quick exit can delay the final opt-out event until a later launch. The event is not permanently lost, but draining the pending task during shutdown would make delivery more reliable.

Explanation
The reviewed changes support #1498 or #1499. Identity caching and lifecycle handling support backend identity telemetry. Opt-out marker, event, and machine-ID handling support the final opt-out event. Request headers support the client-header requirement in #1498. The related tests support these implementations. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed evidence.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
#1498 meets its coding requirements. The PR resolves user_id and tenant, keeps machine_id for anonymous events, removes email attribution, and adds x-altimate-client headers. #1499 remains incomplete. recordOptOut() checks for the marker before the POST, but it writes the marker only after a 2xx response. Two processes can both observe no marker and both send telemetry_opted_out. OptOutMarker.write() uses exclusive creation, but that occurs after both sends and does not prevent duplicate events. The opt-out tests do not cover concurrent launches.
Resolution
Add an atomic cross-process claim before the opt-out POST. Release the claim after a non-2xx response or request failure so a later launch can retry. Keep the final marker after a successful response. Add a concurrent-launch test that proves only one opt-out event is sent.

Claims
C1 With telemetry disabled by ALTIMATE_TELEMETRY_DISABLED, OPENCODE_DISABLE_TELEMETRY or telemetry.disabled, Telemetry.init() sends at most one telemetry_opted_out envelope per machine across processes, and nothing else: track() drops every event, and after the marker ~/.altimate/telemetry-opted-out exists no request is made on any later init.
C2 The event is sent only when ~/.altimate/machine-id already holds a UUID; recordOptOut() never mints a machine id, never creates the .altimate directory before the send succeeded, and never calls the backend (identity comes from TelemetryIdentity.cached(), which is file-only).
C3 The marker is written only after the ingest endpoint answered 2xx; a non-2xx, a thrown fetch or the 3 s abort leaves no marker, so the next init tries once more.
C4 The envelope's baseData.name is telemetry_opted_out; its properties carry machine_id, cli_version, source, launch_id, opt_out_source (env or config), and user_id plus tenant only when a cached identity matches the credential on disk; tags["ai.user.id"] is the uuid when cached, else the machine id.
C5 After recordOptOut() returns, by any path, the module's machineId and identity are empty again, and enabled stays false.
C6 A normal (enabled) init removes the marker, so a later opt-out is recorded again; nothing else reads or writes the marker.
C7 Under a test runner (NODE_ENV=test, BUN_TEST, VITEST, JEST_WORKER_ID) recordOptOut() returns before touching any file unless Telemetry.allowOptOutUnderTestRunner(true) was called, and it returns whenever ALTIMATE_TELEMETRY_FORCE=true, regardless of the sink.
C8OptOutMarker paths resolve through Global.Path.home, so OPENCODE_TEST_HOME redirects both the marker and the machine-id read; in a real session that is the same directory getOrCreateMachineId() uses.
C9recordOptOut() is not awaited by doInit(); an opted-out launch never waits on the network.
Residuals
R1 A short-lived process may exit before the 3 s send completes; the event is then sent by a later launch (C3). Accepted.
R2 An opt-out set before the machine ever ran with telemetry on produces no event and no marker; the dashboard states that remainder as unknowable.
R3 Two concurrent processes on one machine starting while opted out and unmarked can both send the event once; the marker then stops both. Accepted as a rare double count.
R4 The automated-run.test.ts isolation helper now also sets OPENCODE_TEST_HOME; that is a test-only change so code keyed on Global.Path.home sees the temp home under Bun, whose os.homedir() does not follow HOME.

WARNING: Mutating module-level machineId across await TelemetryIdentity.cached() leaks or resets machineId on concurrent init() cycles
recordOptOut() is fired without await (void recordOptOut(...)), so a shutdown() followed by a new init() in the same process (such as across session loops or in test suites) can run concurrently with an in-flight recordOptOut() paused at await TelemetryIdentity.cached() (line 2179). During that window, the new doInit() shares the mutated machineId, and when recordOptOut() resumes at lines 2184–2185 (or in catch at lines 2201–2202), it overwrites machineId = "" and identity = undefined, clobbering the active session's state. Resolve const cachedIdentity = await TelemetryIdentity.cached() before mutating module state so machineId and identity are only set and restored synchronously around toAppInsightsEnvelopes(...).

Fixed in 3032626: toAppInsightsEnvelopes() takes the machine id and identity as arguments, so recordOptOut() never writes module state; a later fix (6e425e4) also fences the whole send on the lifecycle generation.

WARNING:readMachineId() uses unbounded readFileSync instead of lstatSync and size-capped reading like getOrCreateMachineId()
In src/altimate/util/machine-id.ts, reading ~/.altimate/machine-id explicitly checks lstatSync(idPath).isFile() and caps reads at 512 bytes via a file descriptor to avoid following symlinks or slurping multi-MB files into memory before regex validation. Here, fs.readFileSync(path.join(dir(), "machine-id"), "utf8") follows symlinks and reads the entire file into memory unrestricted.

Fixed in 3032626: readMachineId() now uses readExistingMachineId() from util/machine-id.ts (lstat regular-file check, 512-byte cap, UUID validation), with a test for a corrupt or oversized file.
…a shutdown
Each resolution carries the generation it started in and applies only while
it is the newest; shutdown() bumps the generation, so an in-flight /users/me
answer for the previous credential is discarded.

Resolve the credential like the provider (file, else the auth-store key);
notice sign-in, sign-out and key changes on disk at the next flush; attribute
a batch to the identity it was tracked under; drop the cache on a 401 or 403;
never cache an answer for a credential that changed mid-flight.

A resolution that fails while a credential exists resets the stamp with a
60 s backoff so a later flush tries again; an auth-store key keeps no trailing

The send carries the lifecycle it started in; shutdown() bumps it, so a task

This PR now carries the identity commits that were #1500 plus the opt-out marker. The two review logs are merged here: #1500's claims keep their numbers (C1–C14, R1–R3); #1501's become C15–C23 and R4–R7. C24 writes down the lifecycle fence that round 2 on #1501 reviewed. C20 is restated to match the code after the round 1 fix on #1501 (the opt-out send no longer touches module state).
Review runs against these claims. Report only a reproducible trace that violates a numbered claim; instances of the disclosed residuals are not findings. A round with no claim violation ends review.
History. Identity (as #1500): round 1 P1 fixed (generation fence); round 2 clean on d275dec; cubic items fixed in 6be240e; round 3 P2 fixed in cbc3a6d; the confirming round on cbc3a6d raised only an instance of R3, declined. Opt-out (as #1501): round 1 P2 fixed (lifecycle fence); round 2 clean on 6e425e4, which is c858470 before the branch was rebased onto the final identity head. Since then: main merged in, and the test fixtures set the surface field main made required on startup_ready. Combined round 1 (Codex) clean on c523841. CodeRabbit then traced a C15 violation: a send accepted after a shutdown() wrote no marker, so the next opted-out init sent the event again. Fixed in fbb0e7a (C24 restated). Combined round 2 clean on fbb0e7a. cubic's pass on fbb0e7a: 9 of 11 fixed in 3b412e0 (no lookup while disabled, now C25; exclusive marker create, C17; flat exports in the two new modules; machine-id docs; test isolation from the disable flags, the auth store and the real home; condition waits in place of timing sleeps); 2 declined as R1 and R2 instances. cubic's pass on 3b412e0 raised one item (the 3 s send timer), declined: the CLI exits explicitly (C23, R4). Combined round 3 clean on 3b412e0 ("Didn't find any major issues"); review complete on the head.
Claims: identity
C1 When ~/.altimate/altimate.json holds a credential, TelemetryIdentity.resolve() issues at most one GET {altimateUrl}/users/me per distinct credential (url, instance, key) across processes: a second call with the same credential reads ~/.altimate/telemetry-identity.json and makes no request. resolve({ refresh: true }) always requests.
C2 The cache file is written with mode 0o600 and contains only fingerprint (a 16-hex prefix of a sha256 over url, instance and key), user_id and tenant. No email, token or api key is written to it or sent in any telemetry property.
C3resolve() never throws and never blocks telemetry: on a missing credential it removes the cache and resolves undefined; on a non-2xx, a timeout (10 s), a malformed body or a non-UUID uuid, it resolves undefined and writes no cache. A 401 or 403 removes the cache for that credential; a transient failure (other non-2xx, timeout, malformed body) keeps a cache written by an earlier success for the same credential, and a cache for a different credential is never returned.
C4 After Telemetry.init() with a credential on disk, once TelemetryIdentity.resolve() has settled (or after Telemetry.refreshIdentity()), every envelope's properties carry user_id (lower-cased uuid) and tenant, and tags["ai.user.id"] equals that uuid; without an identity, properties carry neither key and tags["ai.user.id"] is the machine id (or empty when none).
C5Telemetry.shutdown() clears the in-memory identity; a later init() resolves it again from whatever credential is on disk, so a sign-out followed by a re-init in one process does not stamp the previous account.
C6 No code path in src/altimate/telemetry/index.ts reads Account.active() or hashes an email any more; createHash remains only for hashError.
C7 Every request built in src/altimate/api/client.ts (validate-credentials, social token exchange, the generic datamate request) and in src/altimate/workspace/api-client.ts (req()) sends x-altimate-client: altimate-code/<InstallationVersion>; buildMcpConfig() headers (an MCP server, not the backend) are unchanged.
C8 The browser sign-in in src/altimate/plugin/altimate.ts calls Telemetry.refreshIdentity() only after AltimateApi.saveCredentials() resolved; a rejection from it cannot fail the sign-in. refreshIdentity() flushes the buffered batch under the identity it was tracked with, clears the in-memory identity, then resolves.
C9 Anonymous sessions (no credential) produce envelopes identical to main's apart from the removed userEmail hash, which only applied when Account.active() returned an email.
C10 A resolution that started before a later resolution or a shutdown() never assigns identity (generation fence).
C11 The credential is resolved the way the provider resolves it: ~/.altimate/altimate.json first, else the altimate-backend entry of the auth store parsed with parseAltimateKey().
C12 Every flush stats both credential files; when either changed since the current identity was resolved, the batch being flushed keeps the identity captured at the start of that flush, the in-memory identity is cleared, and a new resolution starts, so events tracked after that flush carry the new identity once resolved, or none.
C13 An answer for a credential that changed or was removed during the request is neither cached nor returned.
C14 A resolution that fails while a credential exists (non-2xx other than 401/403, timeout, malformed body) is retried at the first flush after a 60 s backoff, not on every flush; the backoff throttles only that unchanged credential, and a different credential appearing in the window is noticed by the stamp comparison at the next flush; shutdown() resets the backoff. A credential taken from the auth store is normalised like the file credential (no trailing slash).
Claims: opt-out
C15 With telemetry disabled by ALTIMATE_TELEMETRY_DISABLED, OPENCODE_DISABLE_TELEMETRY or telemetry.disabled, Telemetry.init() sends at most one telemetry_opted_out envelope per machine across processes, and nothing else: track() drops every event, and after the marker ~/.altimate/telemetry-opted-out exists no request is made on any later init.
C16 The event is sent only when ~/.altimate/machine-id already holds a UUID; recordOptOut() never mints a machine id, never creates the .altimate directory before the send succeeded, and never calls the backend (identity comes from TelemetryIdentity.cached(), which is file-only).
C17 The marker is written only after the ingest endpoint answered 2xx, by an exclusive create (an existing entry, a symlink included, fails the write); a non-2xx, a thrown fetch or the 3 s abort leaves no marker, so the next init tries once more.
C18 The envelope's baseData.name is telemetry_opted_out; its properties carry machine_id, cli_version, source, launch_id, opt_out_source (env or config), and user_id plus tenant only when a cached identity matches the credential on disk; tags["ai.user.id"] is the uuid when cached, else the machine id.
C19 A normal (enabled) init removes the marker, best effort, so a later opt-out is recorded again; nothing else reads or writes the marker.
C20recordOptOut() never assigns the module's machineId, identity or enabled; the envelope is built from local values, and enabled stays false.
C21 Under a test runner (NODE_ENV=test, BUN_TEST, VITEST, JEST_WORKER_ID) recordOptOut() returns before touching any file unless Telemetry.allowOptOutUnderTestRunner(true) was called, and it returns whenever ALTIMATE_TELEMETRY_FORCE=true, regardless of the sink.
C22OptOutMarker paths resolve through Global.Path.home, so OPENCODE_TEST_HOME redirects both the marker and the machine-id read; in a real session that is the same directory getOrCreateMachineId() uses. The machine-id read has the minting read's regular-file, 512-byte and UUID checks.
C23recordOptOut() is not awaited by doInit(); an opted-out launch never waits on the network.
C24 An opt-out send carries the lifecycle it started in, and shutdown() ends that lifecycle: a send whose lifecycle ended before the request is issued does not post. An accepted send writes the marker unless an enabled init ran after the send started (that init bumps a marker generation before it clears the marker), so a send still in flight never recreates a cleared marker, and one accepted across a shutdown while still opted out keeps its marker.
C25Telemetry.refreshIdentity() returns at once while telemetry is disabled or not initialised: no flush and no users/me request.
Residuals
R1 Events flushed before the first resolve() settles carry only the machine id; the join for a signed-in machine starts with the first flush after resolution. Accepted: telemetry never waits on the backend.
R2 A credential change is noticed at the next flush (the 5 s interval, an anchor event, or shutdown); events tracked between the change and that flush are attributed to the previous identity. Accepted.
R3 The change detection keys on mtime and size of the two files (two stats per flush, no reads). A rewrite that leaves both unchanged (same length, timestamp preserved) is noticed at the next retry when a backoff is pending (within 60 s), otherwise at the next process start. Accepted: content comparison would cost two file reads per flush in every process.
R4 A short-lived process may exit before the 3 s opt-out send completes; the event is then sent by a later launch (C17). Accepted.
R5 An opt-out set before the machine ever ran with telemetry on produces no event and no marker; the dashboard states that remainder as unknowable.
R6 Two concurrent processes on one machine starting while opted out and unmarked can both send the event once; the marker then stops both. Accepted as a rare double count.
R7 The automated-run.test.ts isolation helper also sets OPENCODE_TEST_HOME; that is a test-only change so code keyed on Global.Path.home sees the temp home under Bun, whose os.homedir() does not follow HOME.

The marker write keys on a generation that only an enabled init bumps, so a shutdown while still opted out no longer leaves the accepted event unmarked and sent again.

P2: The credential check does not make the cache write conditional: a sign-in can land between loadCredential() and writeJson(), allowing the old identity to remain active for subsequent events. Serialize the credential/cache update or revalidate and invalidate the write before returning.

Declined, no claim violated. A credential that changes between the re-check and the write leaves a cache entry under the old credential's fingerprint, and resolve()/cached() never return an entry whose fingerprint differs from the credential in use (C3). The in-memory identity is replaced at the next flush, because the credential files' stamp changed (C12); events in between are the disclosed R2 window.

Fixed in 3b412e0: the marker is created with flag: "wx"; an existing entry, a planted symlink included, fails the write, which the opt-out path already treats as no marker.
- `refreshIdentity()` makes no lookup while telemetry is disabled
- marker created exclusively
- flat exports in the new modules
- machine-id docs on their own functions
- telemetry tests isolated from disable flags, auth store and real home

@codex review against the numbered claims and the disclosed residuals in the "Codex review log (combined)" comment linked from the description: report only a reproducible trace that violates a numbered claim. Instances of the disclosed residuals are not findings. A round with no claim violation ends review. Declined, no claim violated. The CLI never waits on this timer: src/index.ts awaits Telemetry.shutdown() in its finally and then calls process.exit(), so an opted-out command exits as soon as its own work is done (C23). A send cut short that way is retried by a later launch, the disclosed R4. Cancelling the send at shutdown would not change that, and the pending request holds the event loop as much as the timer does.
Pending opt-out task is not drained before shutdown advances the lifecycle generation.
doShutdown() does not await the detached recordOptOut() task. It increments lifecycleGeneration at the end of shutdown. If a prompt session shuts down while the opt-out task is still awaiting TelemetryIdentity.cached(), the task returns at the lifecycle check before fetch(). The telemetry_opted_out event is not sent in that launch. The marker is not written, so the next disabled launch on the same machine can retry.
This is a functional correctness issue with a one-launch delay. It does not corrupt persisted data, and the marker state remains consistent.
A correction that stores the pending opt-out promise and awaits it inside doShutdown() before lifecycleGeneration++, bounded by the shutdown deadline, would keep doInit() non-blocking. The lifecycle fence would still block any POST that starts after shutdown advances the generation.
I did not establish a permanent loss. The prior account's claim that the marker can be lost is not supported. An unsent event leaves no marker, so the event is retried on the next disabled launch with a machine ID.

Issue for this PR
Closes #1498
Closes #1499
Type of change
What does this PR do?
user_idandtenant, and the user uuid becomes the App Insights user id. Backend calls name the CLI version in a header.telemetry_opted_outevent, then nothing.
Cost side effects
None. The rows gain fixed-size properties, and an opted-out machine sends at most one more event. No model calls, queries or cloud resources grow with user data.
