feat(mcp): altimate-code mcp serve exposes data tools to MCP clients without an LLM - #1543
anandgupta42 wants to merge 32 commits into
Conversation
Add `altimate-code mcp serve`, a stdio MCP server that lets any MCP client (e.g. Claude Code) call altimate-code's data tools directly while the client's own model does the reasoning. The server never calls a model. - Exposes `warehouse_list`, `schema_inspect`, `sql_execute`, `sql_check` and `sql_materialize`, reusing the existing implementations with short tool descriptions. - Read-only by default: the `sql_execute_write` permission is denied unless `--allow-write` is passed; reads are auto-allowed. - Binds a local session at start-up so results do not carry the workspace-routing notice; forwards MCP cancellation to tool calls; `sql_materialize` keeps a session-local scratch warehouse. - Spill hints tell MCP clients to open the spill path with any file reader instead of naming the agent-only `read` tool. - `--connections <file>` or normal connection discovery; stdout carries only MCP protocol messages; no telemetry start-up. session resources, ensuring cleanup occurs when no spill directory was created
as well.

`sql_execute`’s `full_text_columns` description does not direct MCP clients to a

consistent with the runtime spill hint.
Review comments at @packages/opencode/src/index.ts:
- Line 139: Move the `opts.printLogs` handling in the middleware before the
early return for `mcp serve`, so `OPENCODE_PRINT_LOGS` is set for that command.

- Without `--allow-write`, every source query from the MCP tools requests database-enforced read-only where the engine supports it (Postgres read-only transaction, SQLite `query_only`, DuckDB read-only open). Engines without database-level read-only are still served, but `warehouse_list`, a stderr notice at start-up and the docs say plainly that stored functions with side effects are not blocked and a read-only database user is recommended. - Spill output goes to a private per-process directory that is removed when the server closes, through the shared truncation service (user output limits and failure wording preserved). - MCP-facing text names only the exposed tools: no `lineage_check` tip from `schema_inspect`, and client-neutral `full_text_columns` guidance. - `--connections` uses the registry's path resolution and rejects the reserved `scratch` name at start-up; docs state the file replaces discovery. `--print-logs`/`--log-level` now apply to `mcp serve`. - Tests: in-process MCP server tests need real drivers, so they run in a dedicated CI step (`ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E=1`); the allow-write read-back and middleware-skip regressions now fail when the behaviour regresses. Run the MCP E2E tests for MCP changes.
The driver-e2e job runs only when needs.changes.outputs.drivers == 'true'. The drivers filter does not include the MCP server source or test paths. A change limited to those paths can skip the only step that sets ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E=1, so the MCP-specific tests remain skipped.
Add the MCP paths to the drivers filter, or move this step to a job that runs for packages/opencode changes.

WARNING: driver-e2e path filters omit MCP server paths, so PRs touching only mcp-server skip server.test.ts entirely
server.test.ts gates all 15 tests on ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E === "1" (test/altimate/mcp-server/server.test.ts:18), so the main typescript job skips them. The driver-e2e job only runs when needs.changes.outputs.drivers == 'true', and the drivers path filter (ci.yml:89-112) does not include packages/opencode/src/altimate/mcp-server/** or packages/opencode/test/altimate/mcp-server/**. As noted at ci.yml:97-100 for duckdb-open-e2e.test.ts, add those paths to the drivers filter so PRs modifying only MCP server files still run server.test.ts.

Opening // altimate_change start on line 57 and closing on line 164 wraps two existing marker blocks (lines 72–92 and lines 113–149). While computeMarkedLines tracks nesting depth, extractMarkerBlocks in script/upstream/bridge-merge.ts:122-161 and findMarkers in script/upstream/analyze.ts:503-520 use a flat boolean state—pairing line 57's start with line 92's inner end and leaving lines 93–112 and 150–164 unmarked during bridge merges. WARNING: outputLimits ignores documented ALTIMATE_CLI_* env aliases and reverses .json vs .jsonc precedence
Config.Service (src/config/config.ts:545-601, src/config/paths.ts:54-56) resolves Flag.OPENCODE_CONFIG, Flag.OPENCODE_DISABLE_PROJECT_CONFIG, Flag.OPENCODE_CONFIG_DIR, and env("OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT") (which read ALTIMATE_CLI_CONFIG* first), and loads ["altimate-code.json", "altimate-code.jsonc", "opencode.json", "opencode.jsonc"] so .jsonc overrides .json in the same directory. Here, reading process.env.OPENCODE_* directly ignores ALTIMATE_CLI_* variables, and lines 35 and 42 load .jsonc before .json so .json overwrites .jsonc. Additionally, readFile on line 18 only catches ENOENT, so an unreadable ancestor directory (EACCES/EPERM) or directory collision (EISDIR/ENOTDIR) while walking up to / will throw and abort server startup.

P2: This forces read-only mode on scratch writes that sql_execute deliberately allows without approval, so clients cannot create or update their session-local scratch tables unless they enable source writes. Preserve forceReadOnly for source execution, but omit it for isScratch(args.warehouse) && isScratchSafeWrite(sql).

Claude Code includes MCP server instructions in the model context, so the method (profile before choosing keys, compute in the database, materialize for cross-connection joins, sql_check, report only requested values) now reaches the model without relying on a skill. …`; default analyst effort to high - `answer_commit` takes an optional `asked` list (the requested items, in order). With more than one item, every item must map to its own non-empty field or `rows` column; otherwise the call is rejected with the missing items named. At most two such rejections per user turn, then accepted. Filler values (`[]`, `""`, `null`) are ignored; calls without `asked` behave as before. - Committed numbers are compared with numbers in this session's earlier tool output and the user's request, allowing rounding, truncation and x100 / /100 conversions. An unsourced number gets one warning-style rejection per turn; the next commit is accepted. Skipped when no SQL tool has produced output and for integers up to 10. - Rejection counts come from the turn's `answer_commit` error parts in `Tool.Context.messages`, so no extra session state is kept. - `readings` description and the analyst prompt ask for one entry naming the chosen and rejected reading when the wording is ambiguous; readings stay in metadata only. - The analyst requests `high` reasoning effort (adaptive thinking, summarized display) on adaptive-thinking models when no variant or agent effort option is set. `ALTIMATE_ANALYST_EFFORT` selects another level or `off`. The run-budget effort downgrade still applies afterwards. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

… structured output
Claude Code shows the model `structuredContent` in place of the text content, so after
an accepted commit the model saw `{"answer":"..."}` instead of `FINAL ANSWER: ...` and
went on to restate the answer in prose, which can drop requested items. Drops the
`outputSchema` and `structuredContent` added for `answer_commit`; the text result is
unchanged. The test now asserts that neither is returned.

…ks cannot leak in CI runs every test file in one Bun process. `test/mcp/*.test.ts` replace `@modelcontextprotocol/sdk/client/index.js` with a mock that is never restored, so `stdio.test.ts` got a no-op client whose `listTools()` returns no tools. The test now spawns the server with `Bun.spawn` and speaks newline-delimited JSON-RPC itself; cases and assertions are unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`answer_commit` over MCP now returns the basis as context above an answer-only FINAL ANSWER line (rendered as `answer_only` would), so a client that copies the FINAL ANSWER text never includes the explanation. Callers that already set `answer_only` get the answer line alone. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
This reverts commit 0361529.
… one-time requested-items check
- `answer_commit` over MCP takes the user's question verbatim as an MCP-only `request` argument (the server never sees the user message); the adapter strips it before the strict parser.
- A one-time conjunction check rejects a `fields` commit whose field count is below the number of items the request asks for ("the X and its Y"); an unchanged recommit is accepted.
- The FINAL ANSWER line drops the basis (basis rendered above it) only for a complete commit: a `rows` commit, or a `fields` commit covering every requested item. Under-asked commits keep the previous rendering, so a second item named only in the basis is not lost.
- Tests: final-answer rendering branches, MCP server conjunction path, detector unit tests.

Tool definitions are re-sent with every model request. The adapter now collapses optional-property filler unions, drops keys the parsers already enforce and uses short property descriptions; parsing is unchanged. …ow a short preview Over MCP a result too large to show inline now becomes scratch table `result_N` (typed like `sql_materialize`, sequential names), with a 10-row preview, 160-byte cells and a `SELECT ... Native output unchanged. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review follow-up: CSV text cannot tell a `base64:` string from bytes or JSON text from an object, so the hint now says "CSV copy". The scratch table stays the typed source. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…mmit` description
The compact description dropped the guidance and worked example for requests that name an entity and a related item, and clients then committed a single field. Restore it in short form (+221 chars): never collapse a compound request into one field ('the repository and the most copied file' needs two), and an item that only selects the answer is not asked.
Tests: `server.test.ts` (ALTIMATE_MCP_E2E=1) asserts the rule is advertised; size caps raised to 2,250 (`answer_commit`) and 6,250 (all tools).

What does this PR do?
There are two ways to get altimate-code's data tools into another agent today, and both are poor fits:
altimate-code run. That pays for a second model and replaces the client's own reasoning loop. This PR adds
altimate-code mcp serve, a stdio MCP server. Any MCP client, such as Claude Code, can call the data tools directly while its own model does the reasoning. Adds
altimate-code mcp serve, a stdio MCP server so external MCP clients can call Altimate’s five warehouse tools (warehouse_list,schema_inspect,sql_execute,sql_check,sql_materialize) without starting an agent or calling a model. A thin adapter wires the existing tool implementations with a local session, MCP-specific permissions, and client-neutral truncation/spill hints.Safety and behavior: Source SQL writes are denied unless
--allow-write; otherwise reads propagateforceReadOnlythrough dispatch so Postgres/SQLite/DuckDB get database-level protection, with stderr/warehouse_listcaveats for classification-only engines. Scratch materialization and private spill directories are torn down on shutdown; MCP abort signals cancel in-flight queries.Supporting changes:
