feat(learn): attribute lesson recurrence from session corrections - #1556
Conversation
Learning delivered lessons but never checked whether a lesson that was shown still drew a correction on the same topic. Add a deterministic, read-only attribution pass (no model calls): - `learn/recurrence.ts`: match `user_correction` signals to approved lessons (full anchor plus another content token, or >=3 tokens at 60% coverage; affix anchors never match alone; several matches are ambiguous) and classify exposure as before the corrected turn, during it, or unknown order. Evidence is keyed by store, lesson id and normalized text hash, so edited lessons and same ids in other stores never borrow it. Bounded to the newest 200 session snapshots and reports coverage. - Capture records `turnStartedAt` on corrections: the first assistant message after the previous user message, resolved from session history, omitted when uncertain. The capture eligibility shortcut is unchanged. - `learn status` (text and `--json`) reports per-lesson recurrence and topics corrected in >=2 sessions with no matching current lesson. Text output lists only lessons with correction evidence. An analysis failure reports `recurrence_error` instead of failing status. - Reflection marks a bullet `r:N` when its current text was shown before a matching correction in N>=2 sessions; the prompt asks for a clearer EDIT, never a weaker one. Candidates still go through the existing approval gates. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Synthetic continuation user messages no longer count as the corrected request boundary. - An earlier lesson version shown alongside another matching lesson no longer counts as ambiguity evidence for the current text. - Skip signal reads when no session snapshots exist and keep only signals from analyzed sessions. - Look up session history once per correction message. 🟡 Minor · Store the correction message time; signal.at records when the signal was… · capture.ts:187-201
packages/opencode/src/altimate/learn/capture.ts:187-201
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winStore the correction message time;
signal.atrecords when the signal was written, not when the user sent the correction.
attributeusessignal.atas the correction boundary (recurrence.tsLine 89-93).appendSignalssetsattonew Date()at write time. That write runs afterhasPriorAssistant, after theturnStartread ofSession.messages, and after the learn lock is acquired. The correction message's real creation time ismessage.time.created, which is available here (Line 185).This matters in a common case. When the user sends a correction,
Delivery.prepareruns retrieval with the correction text as the query. That retrieval tends to select the lesson the correction matches, and it records the lesson withtier: "request"andatclose to the correction time. If that write happens before the signal append, the code seesstart < at < signal.atand counts a "during turn" correction. In fact, the lesson was shown in response to the correction.learn statusthen reports a "during turn" correction for that lesson. The outcome depends on which write finishes first, so it changes from run to run.To fix this, persist the correction message's
time.created(for example ascorrectedAt). Inattribute, use that value as the boundary and fall back tosignal.atonly when it is missing.🐛 Proposed fix (capture side)
await this.deps.record({ kind: "user_correction", ...(start !== undefined && Number.isFinite(start) ? { turnStartedAt: new Date(start).toISOString() } : {}), + ...(message.time?.created !== undefined && Number.isFinite(message.time.created) + ? { correctedAt: new Date(message.time.created).toISOString() } : {}), sessionID: part.sessionID,Then add
correctedAt?: stringtoSignal/NewSignal, validate it inparsethe same way asturnStartedAt, and inrecurrence.tsuseDate.parse(signal.correctedAt ?? signal.at).🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

- A request right after a compaction marker may be its replay, so its turn start is unknown; compaction markers are never request boundaries. - Extract `turnMessages` (synthetic and compaction flags from real parts) and test it. - Ambiguity counts only lessons the session was shown in their current text; a later lesson created from the correction no longer hides recurrence. - Mark a correction message handled only after its signal is recorded, so a failed write is retried by a later update. - Document recurrence in `learn status` and the reflection `r:N` hint. …eads - `learn status --name` and reflection attribute only that store. - Compaction replays (text metadata `learnOriginalMessage`) have unknown turn starts; attachment-only and agent-mention turns stay request boundaries even though their text companions are synthetic. - Snapshot reads fail closed on unsafe paths and skip a file whose name does not match its session. - The `r` prompt line asks for an EDIT only when the wording is unclear and to keep a correct rule the agent did not follow. - Tests: assert the analyzer really fails in the reflection fallback test, check status text with learning disabled, assert a real unmatched-topic line. The reflect prompt told the model that feedback asking for exactly what a lesson says is HELPFUL, even when the agent had ignored that lesson. An ignored lesson gained helpful votes, which raise its core ranking and offset harmful votes, and it contradicted the new `r:N` hint. HELPFUL now requires the digest to show the agent followed the lesson; a correct but missed lesson keeps its counters and is edited only if its wording is unclear. What does this PR do?
learndelivers approved lessons but has never checked whether a lesson that was shown still drew a correction on the same topic. This adds that check. It is deterministic and read-only, with no model calls.Was → now:
correctedAt(the correcting message's creation time) andturnStartedAt, the start of the agent's response to the request being corrected (the first assistant message after the previous user message, read from session history). Synthetic continuations and compaction markers are not request boundaries; attachment-only turns are. A replayed request after compaction has unknown timing. The field is omitted whenever it can't be determined. Old records still parse. The capture eligibility shortcut is unchanged.learn status(text and--json): now has a recurrence block, scoped to the--namestore. For each lesson it shows sessions shown, matching corrections after exposure, mid-turn, unknown order, ambiguous, and corrections where only an earlier lesson text was shown. Lessons first shown after a correction are ignored for it. It also lists topics corrected in two or more sessions with no matching current lesson. Text output lists only lessons with correction evidence and summarizes the rest as "no observed correction" (it never says "followed"). If the analysis fails, status reportsrecurrence_errorinstead of failing.r:Nonly when its current text was shown before a matching correction in two or more distinct sessions. The prompt asks for an EDIT only when the wording is unclear, and to keep a correct rule the agent simply didn't follow. Results are still staged candidates, so the approval and auto-promotion gates are unchanged.r:N): before, feedback asking for exactly what a lesson says was voted HELPFUL even when the agent had ignored the lesson. Now HELPFUL requires the digest to show the agent followed it; a correct but missed lesson keeps its counters. Ignored lessons no longer climb the core ranking or offset harmful votes.Attribution is conservative on purpose:
_at,stg_) never match alone.user_correctionsignals are attributed. Analysis reads the newest 200 session snapshots and reports how much it covered.No change to delivery, selection, promotion or signal consumption.

Overview
Adds lesson recurrence: a read-only, deterministic check of whether a delivered lesson still drew a user correction on the same topic, without extra model calls.
Capture now records optional
turnStartedAtandcorrectedAtonuser_correctionsignals by resolving turn boundaries from session history (synthetic continuations, compaction, and replay are handled conservatively).learn status(text and--json) reports recurrence per lesson—recurred,during,unknown,ambiguous,earlier_version—from the newest 200 session snapshots plus local signals, plus up to five “unmatched” identifiers corrected in multiple sessions.
