Issue for this PR

Closes #1563

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Refactor / code improvement
  • Documentation

What does this PR do?

  • install (curl one-liner): adds ~/.altimate/bin/altimate-code as a relative symlink to altimate. This happens after a download, after a --binary install, and on the "already installed" exit, so re-running the one-liner (or altimate upgrade) also fixes existing installs. On that exit, the alias is only refreshed when the matching binary is the one in ~/.altimate/bin, so it never runs a different version than the one just checked. Before, the script deleted any altimate-code it found there.
    • ln -sfn overwrites a pre-v0.7.1 altimate-code binary, so that name can't run a stale build. It also replaces a link to a directory instead of writing into it.
    • A real directory at that path is left alone, with a warning.
    • A --binary with an unrelated basename gets no alias.
  • install.ps1: writes two shims next to altimate.exe, both after install and on the "already installed" exit (with the same local-match rule; the install dir is compared as normalized paths in PowerShell and by identity with -ef in bash, so a symlinked HOME or a trailing slash in PATH still matches). Shims follow the binary across upgrades (which rename the running exe aside) and need no symlink privilege.
    • altimate-code.cmd ("%~dp0altimate.exe" %*, exit /b %ERRORLEVEL%) for cmd.exe and PowerShell.
    • An extensionless sh shim for Git Bash/MSYS shells, which don't use PATHEXT. npm also writes a .ps1 shim; it's left out because an execution policy that blocks scripts would break the name. Like every .cmd shim, the .cmd passes arguments through cmd.exe (%VAR% expands, unquoted & | ^ are interpreted), so the README tells scripts to call altimate.
    • An existing file or link at a shim path is replaced, never written through. Order: the .cmd first; then a stray altimate-code.exe, which PATHEXT would otherwise put in front of the .cmd, is removed once the .cmd exists; then the sh shim. A failed .cmd write leaves the old .exe and the sh shim as they were.
    • A leftover altimate-code.exe.old is cleaned up.
    • Alias failures only warn; they never abort the install.
  • altimate uninstall: for curl installs, the summary (including --dry-run) and the manual-removal hint list the other installer files that exist in ~/.altimate/bin: every alias form (including leftover altimate-code.exe.old / altimate.exe.old), plus altimate.exe when you're running from a copied altimate-code.exe. Directories are never listed, and nothing outside that directory is either, so an unrelated altimate-code in ~/.local/bin is never named. On Windows the commands are Remove-Item -LiteralPath '…' -Force (PowerShell), elsewhere rm '…'; paths are single-quoted literals, so $, backticks or quotes in them are never expanded.
  • Docs: README and the troubleshooting page no longer say the standalone install exposes only altimate.

How did you verify your code works?

  • The real one-liner, end to end on macOS arm64. cat install | bash (what curl … | bash runs) with a throwaway HOME and a system-only PATH, downloading the real v0.12.7 release with its checksum verified:
    • Fresh install: creates ~/.altimate/bin/altimate-code -> altimate, and altimate-code --version prints 0.12.7.
    • Default flags: the installer adds ~/.altimate/bin to .zshrc, and a fresh zsh -i finds altimate-code.
    • Pre-fix install, re-run: the alias is added on the "Version 0.12.7 already installed" path, with no re-download.
    • Stale legacy altimate-code binary, re-run: it is replaced by the alias.
    • Repeated re-run: still exactly one link.
    • Control: the same test against main's installer leaves only altimate, and altimate-code is command not found.
  • packages/opencode/test/install/install-alias.test.ts runs the real bash installer against a throwaway HOME. It covers:
    • --binary;
    • an offline download, with a curl stub serving a local release archive;
    • the already-installed exit;
    • a stale altimate-code binary;
    • re-runs;
    • a link to a directory, and a real directory, at the alias path;
    • altimate.exe → altimate-code.exe;
    • an unrelated --binary name.
  • packages/opencode/test/cli/uninstall-hint.test.ts covers the uninstall hint list for Unix, Windows, a copied alias, and directories outside ~/.altimate/bin.
  • test/windows/install.Tests.ps1 extracts Install-Alias from the script's syntax tree and covers:
    • the content of both shims;
    • the .cmd shim running for real, with cmd.exe standing in for altimate.exe, checking arguments and exit code;
    • a hard link, and a junction or directory link, at the shim path;
    • keeping altimate-code.exe, and the Git Bash shim, when the .cmd can't be written;
    • .old cleanup.
  • Locally with pwsh 7.6 + Pester 6.2: 17 pass, 2 skipped. The skipped ones (cmd.exe execution, a Windows directory symlink) only run on Windows; CI's Pester job runs them on windows-latest.
  • The extensionless shim ran under a real sh from a path containing a space. "a b", "%PATH%", "^&!", "$HOME" and "" were all forwarded unchanged, and exit code 7 propagated.
  • Each new regression test was checked by removing the code it guards and confirming the test fails.
  • bun test test/install test/cli/uninstall-hint.test.ts test/skill/release-v0.7.1-binary-adversarial.test.ts test/skill/release-v0.7.2-adversarial.test.ts test/branding test/upstream: 1131 pass. Typecheck and prettier pass.

Follow-ups (not changed here)

  • check_version and "already installed": it treats any altimate / altimate-code on PATH at the requested version as "already installed" and exits, even when that binary is outside ~/.altimate/bin (e.g. an npm or Homebrew install). That predates this PR. Here the alias is only refreshed when the match is the local binary.
  • Windows PowerShell 5.1: altimate upgrade and the documented one-liner run under 5.1, but CI's Pester job runs only pwsh 7. A second shell: powershell run would cover it.
  • 8.3 short-name PATH entries aren't expanded by the local-match check. Such an install skips the alias on the "already installed" exit; it never aliases the wrong binary.
  • Plugin docs: the "curl, Homebrew and PowerShell installers install only altimate" wording in altimate-claude-plugin#8 and altimate-codex-plugin#5 should be updated once this merges.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description completes the required sections, identifies the issue, classifies the change, explains the implementation, documents verification and follow-ups, states that there are no cost side effects, and completes the checklist.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1563 requires standalone curl and PowerShell installers to expose both altimate and altimate-code, preserve the alias across upgrades, and include the alias in uninstall hints. The curl installer creates or refreshes a relative alias for downloads, --binary installs, and matching local installs. install.ps1 creates .cmd and extensionless sh shims after installation and on matching local installs. Uninstall discovery and removal hints include applicable alias and .old files while excluding directories and unrelated paths. The changed installer and uninstall tests cover these requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #1563. Installer code adds and maintains the requested aliases. Uninstall code reports related installer files. Documentation and regression tests support the installer behavior. No unrelated product behavior is demonstrated.

Replies to the bot comments above:

  • pr-standards (no linked issue) and issue-compliance: opened Standalone installers (curl / PowerShell) don't expose the altimate-code command #1563 and added Closes #1563 to the description. The rest of the template (type, what, verification, cost side effects, checklist) was already filled in.
  • Quality-check "automatically closed" notices: the PR is still open, and the anti-slop, check-compliance and check-standards jobs pass on the current head (26ebbd306). The description has been reviewed and updated for every change since.
  • CodeRabbit "draft PR not reviewed": the PR is no longer a draft. @coderabbitai review
  • Cubic (2 threads): replied inline and resolved. One concerns ln -sf following a link to a directory, which no longer applies (ln -sfn, with a test). The other is a pre-existing already-installed short-circuit, recorded as a follow-up in the description.

Re the repeated quality-check notice above: the PR is still open, and anti-slop, check-compliance and check-standards all pass on 06b196291. The issue is linked (#1563) and the description is up to date. The only remaining label is needs-review:blocked, from the first anti-slop run, which a maintainer needs to clear.

@hkaltai Thanks for the updates. I’ll review the current PR changes.

Timestamp: 2026-10-19T11:32:29.471Z
Learning: In AltimateAI/altimate-code, the standalone installer's check_version short-circuit can treat an altimate or altimate-code executable outside ~/.altimate/bin as already installed when its version matches. This behavior predates PR #1562. Changing that behavior is outside the scope of the standalone-installer alias fix and belongs in a separate change.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include the .exe alias in POSIX uninstall candidates.

When a POSIX user installs with --binary altimate.exe, install creates ~/.altimate/bin/altimate-code.exe. The POSIX uninstall hint only checks altimate and altimate-code, so it omits the existing alias and leaves it behind.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on uninstall.ts:24-35 (POSIX hint missing altimate-code.exe): fixed in the latest commit. The POSIX list now includes altimate-code.exe, and uninstall-hint.test.ts is updated. The hint still prints only entries that exist, so a normal POSIX install sees no change.

@hkaltai Thanks for the fix. I verified that the POSIX list includes altimate-code.exe and that the test expectations include it. The hint still excludes missing paths and real directories, so normal POSIX output remains unchanged.

This addresses the finding. I did not run the tests.

Applied in 6d5f4ba. The loop has since moved into collectRemovalTargets, so the summary and --dry-run can list the files too. It now runs the lstat checks with Promise.all and keeps the candidates in their original order.

[MAJOR] The Windows uninstall hint prints POSIX rm / rm -f commands that don't run on Windows

Installation.method() returns curl for an install.ps1 install, so on Windows this loop now prints up to five lines like:

rm -f "C:\Users\u\.altimate\bin\altimate-code.cmd"
  • cmd.exe has no rm.
  • In PowerShell, rm is Remove-Item, and -f is ambiguous ("Possible matches include: -Filter -Force"), so the command errors out.

The lines this PR adds are mostly Windows-only files (.cmd, the extensionless shim, .exe.old), so none of them can be run as printed. The existing rm "${targets.binary}" on line 307 has the same problem.

Suggested fix: branch on the platform for both lines:

const rmCmd = (p: string, force = false) =>
  process.platform === "win32"
    ? `  Remove-Item -LiteralPath "${p}" -Force`
    : `  rm${force ? " -f" : ""} "${p}"`
prompts.log.info(rmCmd(targets.binary))
// ...
if (present) prompts.log.info(rmCmd(file, true))

Also add a test in uninstall-hint.test.ts for the win32 output format.

Consensus finding (Claude, GPT 5.3 Codex, DeepSeek V4 Pro, Qwen 3.6 Plus). This is the only finding the panel treats as blocking.

Fixed in 0fddc56. A new removeFileCommand(file, platform, force) prints Remove-Item -LiteralPath "<path>" -Force on win32 and rm / rm -f elsewhere. It is used for both the binary line and the installer-file lines. uninstall-hint.test.ts covers the win32 and POSIX output. Windows gets the PowerShell form because that is where install.ps1 runs. The legacy .opencode rmdir line is unchanged, since that layout never existed on Windows.

Multi-model consensus review: minor findings, nits and notes

Verdict: request changes. Only the uninstall-hint issue (posted inline on uninstall.ts:317) blocks the merge. Everything below is a follow-up.

Windows checks. The windows-installer Pester job passed 26/26 on windows-latest, including the real cmd.exe exit-code test through the shim. The .cmd is written as ASCII with no BOM and CRLF line endings, and the sh shim uses LF. That job runs pwsh 7 only (see #3).

Minor

  1. A partial Install-Alias failure can leave a stale altimate-code.exe shadowing the new .cmd (install.ps1:71-88). Both shim writes and the .exe removal share one try. If altimate-code.cmd is written but the extensionless write throws (for example, a real directory exists at altimate-code), the .exe is never removed. PATHEXT then picks .EXE over .CMD, so a stale build runs. Fix: track whether the .cmd write succeeded, and remove or park $shadowingExe whenever it did.

  2. The .cmd shim re-parses arguments through cmd.exe (install.ps1:62).

    • Defined %VAR% references expand.
    • Unquoted & | < > ^ are interpreted. PowerShell quotes arguments for .cmd files only when they contain spaces, so x&y reaches cmd.exe unquoted.
    • An embedded newline truncates the command, which matters for multi-line run prompts.
    • Ctrl+C shows "Terminate batch job (Y/N)?".

    The PR body's argument-forwarding evidence ("a b", "%PATH%", "^&!") comes from the sh shim only. The Pester test passes only /c echo forwarded and /c exit 7. The PR also says this is "the same pair npm writes", but npm writes three shims (.cmd, .ps1 and sh). Suggest documenting that scripts should call altimate, and adding a Pester case with %PATH% and a&b.

  3. Windows PowerShell 5.1 is untested. It is what actually runs in production: altimate upgrade spawns powershell -NoProfile … irm | iex (installation/index.ts:801), and the documented one-liner is powershell -c. CI runs only shell: pwsh. The APIs used look 5.1-safe; a second run of the Install-Alias block under shell: powershell would prove it.

  4. The already-installed local-match gate is a raw string comparison (install.ps1:267, install:281). An 8.3 short path, a trailing separator in a PATH entry, or a symlinked $HOME silently skips the alias. That is the "re-run the installer" fix the troubleshooting page now promises. Normalize both sides ([IO.Path]::GetFullPath(...).TrimEnd('\'); cd -P … && pwd -P or -ef in bash). The PowerShell branch also has no test.

  5. uninstall --dry-run doesn't preview the alias files. The sibling list is printed only in executeUninstall, after the dry-run return (uninstall.ts:154 vs :312-318). Compute the list once and show it in showRemovalSummary too.

  6. altimate.exe.old is missing from the Windows hint (uninstall.ts:40). You list it as a pre-existing follow-up, but it is a one-line addition next to altimate-code.exe.old.

Nits

  1. Shim replacement is delete-then-write (install.ps1:72-80). If the write fails, that entry ends up with no shim, so "a failure leaves the shims not yet reached as they were" holds only for later entries. Write to a temp file and move it into place, as Write-InstallMarker does, or make the comment precise.
  2. Install-Alias can rewrite altimate-code.cmd while it is running. This happens when a user runs altimate-code upgrade through the shim. cmd.exe re-reads a batch file by byte offset after the child process returns, so this is safe only because the new content is byte-identical. A comment would protect future edits to the shim.
  3. Under Git Bash, ln -sfn makes a deep copy by default (install:488), so altimate-code.exe becomes a full duplicate of the binary. This is already noted in the comment, and install.ps1 removes the copy on its next run.

Not tied to a diff line

  • Dependent plugin PRs. altimate-claude-plugin#8 and altimate-codex-plugin#5 resolve altimate first and fall back to altimate-code, so they work with or without this PR. Their README/CHANGELOG say the "curl, Homebrew and PowerShell installers install only altimate". Homebrew already ships both names (publish.ts:330 bin.install_symlink "altimate" => "altimate-code"), and after this PR curl and PowerShell do too, so that wording should be updated.
  • Unintended consequence. install --binary <dev build> now takes over the altimate-code name in ~/.altimate/bin. That directory usually comes earlier on PATH than npm or Homebrew, so a local dev build becomes the altimate-code every tool resolves. Worth a line in the docs.
  • Missing tests:
    • win32 uninstall-hint output;
    • .cmd argument fidelity with %, &, ^ and newlines;
    • the PowerShell already-installed branch;
    • a Windows PowerShell 5.1 run;
    • .cmd written but the sh shim failing;
    • a Windows directory symlink (not only a junction) at a shim path, which the panel disagreed on;
    • an end-to-end Windows install or upgrade, and the sh shim run under real Git Bash.

Positives: the relative symlink survives upgrades; -sfn replaces stale pre-v0.7.1 binaries and links to directories; the alias is created only for a local match; shims are written before the shadowing .exe is removed; the uninstall hint is limited to ~/.altimate/bin and checked with lstat; and the tests are thorough (the real bash installer with a curl stub, and Install-Alias extracted from the script's syntax tree).

Panel: Claude, GPT 5.3 Codex, DeepSeek V4 Pro, Grok 4.3, Qwen 3.6 Plus. Converged in 1 round.

@sahrizvi Thanks for the thorough review. Everything below is in 0fddc56d8 unless noted.

Blocker (Windows rm hint): fixed. See the inline reply. Windows now gets Remove-Item -LiteralPath … -Force, with tests.

Minor

  1. Partial failure leaves a shadowing .exe: fixed. Install-Alias now writes the .cmd, then removes or parks altimate-code.exe, then writes the sh shim, so a failed sh write can no longer leave the .exe in front of the .cmd. New Pester case: "removes a shadowing altimate-code.exe once the .cmd exists, even if the Git Bash shim fails" (it fails on the previous code).
  2. .cmd argument re-parsing: documented rather than changed. Every .cmd shim behaves this way, npm's included. npm's third shim (.ps1) is deliberately left out, because an execution policy that blocks scripts would break the altimate-code name entirely. The README and the install.ps1 header now say %VAR% expands and unquoted & | ^ are interpreted, so scripts should call altimate. You are right that "the same pair npm writes" was inaccurate; it is corrected in the code comment and the description. I did not add a Pester case for %PATH% / a&b: it would only assert the cmd.exe behaviour now documented.
  3. Windows PowerShell 5.1 in CI: left as a follow-up. It needs a second shell: powershell run of the Pester job, and I could not check here that the rest of install.Tests.ps1 passes under 5.1. The new code sticks to .NET APIs that 5.1 has.
  4. Raw string comparison for the local-match gate: fixed. install compares with -ef (directory identity, so a symlinked HOME or trailing slash still matches). install.ps1 uses a new Test-PathInDir, which compares full paths and ignores case, a trailing separator, and ./.. segments, with Pester tests. New bash test: a symlinked PATH entry still gets the alias (it fails on the previous code). Re-checked with the real v0.12.7 one-liner and PATH set to ~/.altimate/bin/. One gap remains: an 8.3 short-name PATH entry is not expanded, so it skips the alias rather than mismatching.
  5. --dry-run preview: fixed. The installer files are collected once in collectRemovalTargets and listed in the summary as ✓ Installer file: …, so --dry-run shows them too.
  6. altimate.exe.old: added to the Windows list.

Nits
7. Delete-then-write: the comment now says exactly that: the old entry is deleted before the write, so a failed write leaves no shim of that name.
8. Running .cmd rewritten by altimate-code upgrade: added a comment that this is safe only while the shim content stays byte-identical.
9. Git Bash deep copy: already noted in the comment, and install.ps1 replaces the copy on its next run. No change.

Not tied to a diff line

  • Plugin PRs (altimate-claude-plugin#8, altimate-codex-plugin#5): agreed, their "only altimate" wording should change once this merges. That is in those repos, so I have not touched it here.
  • install --binary <dev build>: only a binary named altimate (or altimate.exe) gets the alias. Such a build already takes over altimate in ~/.altimate/bin, so altimate-code now follows the same binary as altimate. That is the intent of the alias. Any other name (e.g. altimate-dev) gets none, which is tested.
  • Missing tests now covered: win32 hint output, .cmd written with the sh shim failing, the already-installed directory comparison (Test-PathInDir, plus the symlinked-PATH bash test), and a Windows directory symlink (Windows-only; junctions were already covered). Still out of scope: a 5.1 run, an end-to-end Windows install, and the sh shim under real Git Bash. The sh shim has been run under /bin/sh with the awkward arguments listed in the description.

curl and PowerShell installs now put altimate-code next to altimate, as
npm, Homebrew and AUR do: a relative symlink, or on Windows a .cmd plus a
Git Bash shim that stays inert under WSL. Re-running the installer adds it.
The uninstall hint names these files.
