Issue for this PR

Fixes #1125

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Refactor / code improvement
  • Documentation

What does this PR do?

Adds catalogs for safety, lint and policy rules observed from altimate-core 0.9.0, with triggering examples and severities. Links the catalogs from Available Checks and corrects the SELECT * example to L001 / select_star.

How did you verify your code works?

  • From docs/: mkdocs build --site-dir /tmp/altimate-docs-site passes with no new diagnostics against the base.
  • Ran all 55 safety/lint examples and 11 policy examples through the CLI. Every documented rule and severity matched.
  • bun run typecheck: 13 workspace checks pass.

Selected finding fields from the CLI output:

{
  "safety": {
    "rule": "unbalanced_quote",
    "severity": "error"
  },
  "lint": {
    "rule": "select_star",
    "code": "L001",
    "severity": "warning"
  },
  "policy": {
    "rule": "require_limit",
    "severity": "error"
  }
}

Cost side effects

None. No additional model calls, remote warehouse queries or cloud resources.

Screenshots / recordings

Not a UI change.

Drafted-by: Codex (GPT-6); reviewed by @Vamsi-klu before posting

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added a Rule Catalog covering observed safety and lint rules, their examples and severities, and policy-rule configuration.
    • Linked check descriptions to relevant catalog sections and clarified that lint findings may omit rule and code fields.
    • Updated JSON and text examples to show a select_star finding with code L001.
    • Documented catalog limitations and how check errors are represented when an engine call fails.

Vamsi-klu and others added 2 commits October 25, 2026 00:16
Add Safety, Lint and Policy rule tables to the check docs, linked from the
Available Checks table. Every rule was observed from the real check CLI
against altimate-core 0.9.0; none is invented. Fix the JSON/text examples,
which showed `L003` (missing_where_delete) for a SELECT * finding.

Explanation

The description follows the required template, identifies the issue, marks the change as documentation, explains the changes, reports verification steps, documents that there are no cost side effects, and completes the checklist.

The changed content is limited to docs/docs/usage/check.md. It adds rule-catalog sections, links the catalog from the Available Checks table, updates finding examples, and documents rule and severity behavior. These changes directly support issue #1125. No unrelated change is established.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1125 requires a catalog of every engine-emitted safety rule, every built-in lint rule, and every built-in policy check. The PR adds names, descriptions, examples, severities, policy configuration keys, and links from the Available Checks table. However, the catalog states that it contains rules observed from a probe corpus and that the engine may emit rules not listed. This does not establish the required complete inventory. The PR also does not provide engine-metadata generation or evidence that the curated list is exhaustive for the pinned 0.9.0 engine.

Resolution

Make the catalog exhaustive for the pinned @altimateai/altimate-core 0.9.0 version, or add a metadata-based generation process that proves completeness. Include every emitted safety rule, built-in lint rule, and built-in policy check with its required description and example. Keep the catalog update process tied to each engine version bump.

### Lint Rules

Lint findings carry both a `code` and a `rule`. Almost every `SELECT` without a `LIMIT` also reports `L030`, so the examples below list only the rule they demonstrate.

Reconcile the lint finding contract.

The earlier guidance says lint findings may omit both rule and code, but this line says they always carry both fields. State that both fields are normally present but optional, or update the earlier guidance. Inconsistent documentation can cause JSON consumers to mishandle valid findings.

Replace or label the legacy policy examples.

The CLI passes the policy JSON unchanged to @altimateai/altimate-core@0.9.0. The rules/pattern examples can therefore run without enforcing no-drop-table or require-limit.

Use cost_control.require_limit for require-limit. Do not use query_patterns.allowed_statements: ["SELECT"] as a replacement for no-drop-table; it also rejects every non-SELECT statement. Mark no-drop-table unsupported unless the engine provides an exact supported setting.
