fix(variables): compare variable names case-insensitively everywhere (DOPE-599) - #1083
Conversation
…(DOPE-599) IEC 61131-3 identifiers are case-insensitive, but the resource-global duplicate-name check compared names verbatim, so `Motor` and `motor` were both accepted as global variables while the same pair was correctly refused for a POU local. `checkIfGlobalVariableExists` is gone in favour of `checkIfVariableExists`, which already folds case. Folding case alone makes a case-only rename collide with the variable being renamed, so `checkIfVariableExists` gained an `exclude` parameter — the same reference-equality skip `checkIfLocationExists` already uses — and both update validators now pass the variable under edit. That also fixes the rename the UI actually reaches: `updateVariableValidation` received `variableToUpdate` but never used it for the name check, so renaming a global to a different case of its own name was refused. The legacy `workspace/utils/variables.ts` copy carried the same bug in both of its predicates. Its auto-suffix filters fold case as well now: a case-different name would otherwise filter to nothing and index past the end of the sorted array. Covered at both levels — the validators directly, and through the real store so the immer-draft reference equality is exercised on the path the table uses. …9-global-variable-name-case
WalkthroughVariable validation now treats names as case-insensitive across project and workspace modules. Case-only renames of the same variable remain valid. Renames that collide with another variable are rejected. Tests cover creation, updates, global variables, and project-slice behavior. ChangesVariable validation
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The change improves case-insensitive variable validation, but dense address allocation can still assign overlapping addresses and workspace local case-only renames may remain incorrectly rejected. These correctness risks should be resolved before merge. Suggested reviewers: Poem

Approving. One finding, in code nothing calls. Everything else I checked holds.

On the first
This is CodeRabbit's Major. The substance holds; the severity does not.
In the legacy module, line 184 (globals) passes variableToUpdate; line 114 (locals) does not, and the signature at line 100 does not even accept it. The effect is a regression rather than an omission:
- Before:
variables.some(v => v.name === name)— renamingtesttoTESTcompared'test' === 'TEST'→ false → allowed. - After: case is folded with no exclusion →
'test' === 'test'→ true → refused.
Why I'd call it a nit: I went looking for who consumes that module, and the only external import is arrayValidation, in array-modal.tsx. The legacy updateVariableValidation is exported (line 202) and has no production caller. It is dead code — but dead code that now contradicts the rule this PR establishes, and the fix is the same two lines already present in its sibling seventy lines below.
What I would correct regardless is the PR body, which says:
"Both
updateVariableValidationandupdateGlobalVariableValidationnow pass the variable under edit."
True in project/validation/variables.ts, false in workspace/utils/variables.ts. A reviewer trusting that sentence will not go and look.
What I verified
Mirror — 5/5 files byte-identical, all under src/frontend/.
The locale trap — this uses toLowerCase(), not toLocaleLowerCase(). It matters: in Turkish, 'I'.toLocaleLowerCase('tr') is 'ı', so MOTOR would stop colliding with motor on a Turkish customer's machine, and only there. toLowerCase() is locale-independent by specification. Right call, whether or not it was a deliberate one.
Reference equality against an immer draft — the fragile part, so I followed the caller rather than trusting the comment. getVariableBasedOnRowIdOrVariableId returns variables[index], the live element of the same array that is passed alongside it, so proxy identity holds inside produce.
I tested the alternative I was going to suggest, and it is worse. PLCVariable carries a stable id, so comparing variable.id !== exclude.id looks more robust than proxy identity. I swapped it in and ran the suite: 5 tests fail, against 0 for the version as written. Reference equality is the correct choice here, and the comment explaining it earns its place.
The negative control in the PR body reproduces exactly. Reverting the updateVariableValidation line:
Tests: 4 failed, 1725 passed, 1729 total
Four, and only the four self-rename cases, as claimed.
Existing projects — validation runs only on create (slice.ts:1037) and update (:1114), never on load. A project that today holds Foo and foo as globals still opens; the user simply cannot add a third by that name. That is the right outcome, since under IEC they were always one variable.
Suites — 469 passing across the three touched files, 1729 across the store directory. CI green on both PRs.

On the third: self-exclusion now applies to locals too, against the letter of the card. I agree with the author's reading — that bullet is about not loosening the collision rule, and locals already folded case; self-exclusion is a different axis. The card's own "Watch for" says a case-only rename must stay allowed, and extending that to locals follows the same reasoning. Worth updating the card's wording so it is not closed against a criterion that no longer describes the intent.
Mirror: openplc-web#732 — same review posted there; the 5 shared files are byte-identical.

DOPE-599 — sub-task of DOPE-577.
Problem
IEC 61131-3 identifiers are case-insensitive, so
Motorandmotorare not two variables — they are one, declared twice. The resource-global duplicate-name check compared names verbatim while every other name comparison in the project folds case:A second, worse copy lives in the legacy
store/slices/workspace/utils/variables.ts, where both predicates compared verbatim.Folding case exposed a bug on the path the UI actually reaches.
updateVariableValidationis whatupdateVariable({ scope: 'global' })calls; it already receivedvariableToUpdatebut never passed it to the name check, sovariablesstill contained the variable being renamed and a case-only rename collided with itself. Manually confirmed in the running app: renaming a globaltest_globaltoTEST_GLOBALwas refused as a duplicate.Change
checkIfGlobalVariableExistsdeleted in both modules;checkIfVariableExistsis already exactly the wanted behaviour.checkIfVariableExistsgained anexclude?: PLCVariableparameter — the same reference-equality skipcheckIfLocationExistshas used on this path for a while — so an update can skip the variable under edit.updateVariableValidationandupdateGlobalVariableValidationnow pass the variable under edit.includes, so a case-different name would enter the suffix branch with an empty array and indexsortedVariables[-1]→undefined.name→ TypeError. The project validator'scheckVariableNamealready folds case in the same filter; this brings the legacy copy in line.No caller depended on the case-sensitive reading —
grep -rn "GlobalVariableValidation" src/returns only the two validators and their two test suites.Deliberately wider than the card
The card's acceptance criteria say POU locals and global-variable-list members keep today's behaviour. Self-exclusion now applies to them as well, so a case-only self-rename works for a local too. Reading: that bullet is about not loosening the collision rule for locals (they already fold case), and self-exclusion is a different axis — a local owns no file path, so it has the same claim to a case rename as a global. Blocking it was the same bug. Also, re-setting a variable to the name it already has now returns
okinstead of "already exists", which was a pointless refusal on a no-op.This is intentionally not the stricter rule DOPE-538 applies to POUs and data types, which each own a file path that folds on macOS and Windows. A resource global lives in
project.jsonand owns no file, so folding case is safe. Not touched
elementNameCollisioninstore/slices/shared/slice.ts— that belongs to DOPE-557 and DOPE-598/600, running in parallel.Tests
project-validation-variables.test.tsandworkspace-variables.test.tscover the validators directly: collisions in either direction, case-only rename onto self, rename onto another variable, and both auto-suffix create paths (which would crash without the filter fold).project-slice.test.tsdrives the real Zustand store throughupdateVariable, reproducing the reported scenario end to end. That also exercises theexcludecheck against an immer draft proxy, proving proxy identity holds insideproduce— not something the validator-level tests can show.Negative control: reverting the one-line
updateVariableValidationfix fails exactly the four new self-rename cases and nothing else.Verification
