DOPE-746: Search in Project lists every occurrence, and counts what the tree shows - #1209
Searching for a variable marked occurrences but did not list them. Reported on the daily of 2026-10-23 with a converted Siemens project: the header said 3 matches and the tree showed one row (programs > main > <variable>), with nothing to click through to.
Reading the code, the cause was wider than the symptom:
Only ST and IL bodies were scanned, so a variable on a ladder contact, an FBD node, or in a Python or C++ body was never found through the body.
The count was computed from the already filtered strings, not from the bodies, so it could not agree with the tree.
The listing regex carried a word boundary the counting regex did not (MOTOR counted inside xMOTOR_ON and listed none).
The query was never escaped when "regular expression" was unchecked, so %IX0.0 matched the wrong things and ( threw a SyntaxError swallowed into a count of 0.
Occurrences were stored as matches.join(', ') and split apart again: no line, no context, and clicking one only rewrote the query.
Global variable lists, servers, remote devices were never searched, and a match on a resource instance alone reported "No results found".
What changed
utils/PLC/project-search.ts (new): one pure pass returning a flat list of occurrences. Textual bodies are scanned line by line and keep their line and column; graphical bodies are walked to their strings and keep the node that holds each one. Structural keys (id, type, handles) are skipped so the graph itself never matches.
The count is the list's length, so the header cannot claim rows the tree does not show.
Every scope: POUs, data types, global variable lists, resource (tasks, instances, globals), servers, remote devices.
The query is escaped unless a regular expression was asked for; an invalid expression gives the existing warning toast instead of a silent 0.
Rows carry their place: Line 5: Motor := Lamp AND xMOTOR_ON;, with that row's own occurrence highlighted, so two occurrences on one line are two distinguishable rows.
Clicking a row lands on the occurrence: cursorPosition for textual bodies, and a new graphicalFocus channel that the LD and FBD editors consume once their canvas mounts (the flow does not exist before the tab opens). The selected row is scrolled into view.
The two as string assertions on pou.body.value are gone, narrowed on body.language instead.
Tests
project-search.test.ts (11): ST lines, ladder contact, Python body, matching inside a longer identifier, literal %IX0.0 and (, case sensitivity, GVL / instance / server / remote device, element filters, structural keys, and a name present nowhere.
search-results.test.tsx (3): count equals rows, a click sets the cursor on the occurrence, a click sets the graphical focus.
e2e/project-search.spec.ts: drives the built app against a project with an ST POU and a ladder POU — asserts the header count equals the rendered rows, the three body lines, the two rows for the one line holding two occurrences, then opens one occurrence of each kind and checks the Monaco line and the selected ladder node.
Shared surface change; the sibling PR is Autonomy-Logic/openplc-web#830 on the same branch name, with the surface files byte-identical (verified with git hash-object in both repos). e2e/ is editor-only.
Search across program names, variables, code, graphical logic, data types, and other project elements.
Refine searches with category filters, case sensitivity, or regular expressions.
View match counts, highlighted occurrences, and previews with line numbers for text matches.
Select a result to open its project element; text matches navigate to the occurrence, while graphical matches focus the relevant node and rung.
Bug Fixes
Improved result navigation and selection in graphical editors.
Process
Bug fix on a bugfix/ branch: no Requirements Gathering document is expected for it. No Cybersecurity Risk Assessment: the change reads project data already loaded in the renderer and renders it in the existing result tree. It adds no network exposure, no authentication or permission decision, no cryptography or licensing, no update or delivery mechanism, and parses no externally supplied file beyond the project the user already opened.
Manual test: the e2e above was run locally against the built Electron app (search results and the selected ladder node captured as screenshots).
Search in Project built its result from the POU name, the variable names
and the text of ST and IL bodies only, so a variable used on a ladder
contact, an FBD node or in a Python or C++ body was never found through
the body. The count came from a different pass than the tree, so the
header claimed occurrences no row showed.
The search is now a pure module returning one flat list of occurrences.
Textual bodies are scanned line by line and keep their line and column;
graphical bodies are walked to their strings and keep the node holding
each one. Global variable lists, servers, remote devices and resource
instances are searched too, the query is escaped unless a regular
expression was asked for, and the header is the list's length.
Each row opens where it was found: `cursorPosition` for a textual body,
and a new `graphicalFocus` channel that LD and FBD consume once their
canvas mounts, since the flow does not exist before the tab opens.

Project-wide search collects occurrence-level matches across PLC project content, including textual and graphical bodies. Results appear in a grouped tree and can open matching project elements. Text matches move the editor cursor; graphical matches select and reveal the matching node.

Summary
Search collection and filtering src/frontend/utils/PLC/project-search.ts, src/frontend/utils/PLC/__tests__/project-search.test.ts, src/frontend/components/_features/[workspace]/editor/search-in-project/index.tsx
searchProject collects matches across project content with case and regular-expression options and element filters. The search dialog handles invalid expressions and empty results, then stores successful matches and their count.
Search state stores match entries. The result tree groups and labels occurrences, highlights selected rows, and navigates to project elements. Text matches set the editor cursor position.
Editor state stores graphical focus requests. FBD and ladder editors select the requested node, and the focus hook scrolls it into view before clearing the request.
Search results can show an incorrect preview highlight, but occurrence navigation remains intact. The license header and test fixture also need small corrections; these bounded issues do not appear to block merging.

Base is solid: the count is the list length, every scope the AC names is searched, criteria 1–9 covered in code or tests. CI green on everything that matters (unit, lint, format, arch, shared-surface sync). What's left: one real bug on multi-search selection, plus four nits.
selectedMatchID compares only match.id, but match IDs restart at 0 on each searchProject call. With two saved searches in the panel, clicking a row in search A also marks the same-index row in search B (both carry aria-selected={true}). Fix: scope the selection to searchID:matchID and pass the entry's ID into openMatch.

A zero-width regex (a*, ^, \b alone) pushes a length: 0 occurrence at every position. The lastIndex += 1 guard prevents an infinite loop, but the result is a pile of "matches" with no visible highlight. Fix: skip pushing to found when match[0].length === 0, keep the lastIndex advance.
"only elements" with zero checkboxes sends elementFilters: [], and allows treats an empty list as "allow everything". The "only elements" scope with no selection silently behaves identically to "whole project". Fix: disable Find when "only elements" is selected and nothing is checked, or short-circuit to an empty result.

app.close() hangs with a project open, per CLAUDE.md's "Electron e2e" section. The catch(() => undefined) swallows the error but not the hang. Replace with app.process().kill('SIGKILL'). CodeRabbit flagged this the opposite way (asked for try/finally with close); the CLAUDE.md guidance supersedes.

Review findings:
- The selected row was keyed by the match id alone, which restarts at 0 on
every search, so clicking a row in one saved search marked the row at the
same index in every other open search. The selection is now keyed by the
search and the match together.
- A regular expression able to match the empty string pushed a zero-length
occurrence at every position: rows with nothing to show. Empty matches now
only advance the scan.
- "Only elements" with no element checked sent an empty filter list, which
reads as "allow everything", so the scope behaved like "whole project".
Find is disabled while nothing is checked.
- The e2e left the Electron process alive when an assertion failed. It closes
in a finally and kills the process if it does not end.

A node's `numericId` and the shape name under `variant` are the graph's own,
not something the user wrote, so a search for `default` or for a digit run
listed rows on nodes nobody typed into. Both are skipped now, `variant` only
when it is a string: a block keeps its signature object there, and its name
stays searchable.
