The bug

From Setta's field testing: a SCADA could not write to %MX on a vPLC, and working out why took days. The runtime half of that is RTOP-393, which stops the server confirming writes it discards. This is the editor half.

A located %MX variable with nothing exposing memory already fails the build, and says so clearly:

Nothing produces %MX on this target, and 1 located variable sits on it:
main: flag at %MX0.0

The diagnosis is right. The remedy that follows is not:

An address needs something behind it before a variable can use it. Add a producer under the Device, Remote Devices or Servers branches.

Two of those three branches can never help. Pins, VPP module slots, EtherCAT channels and Modbus master points all produce physical I/O. Memory has exactly one producer: a Modbus server's Buffer Mapping. A user who does not already know that goes looking under Device, finds nothing that mentions memory, and concludes the editor is broken, which is roughly what happened in the field.

The change

describeUnbackedLocations splits the remedy by what was actually offended:

  • a physical area keeps the existing sentence;
  • a memory area gets "No pin or fieldbus produces memory, so %MX is sized under a Modbus server's Buffer Mapping, under Servers, and nowhere else.";
  • a project offending in both gets both.

It stays one remedy line, so the grouping contract the tests already pin ("states the remedy once, however many variables") is unchanged.

No change to what the compiler accepts. Sizing memory from a declaration stays refused: %M was that exception until DOPE-615 removed it so a project could not silently grow the image by declaring into it (FR02, BR14). This only tells the user where to complete the configuration the rule asks for.

Tests

Two added to compute-io-image.test.ts:

  • the memory-only remedy names the Buffer Mapping and does not name the branches that cannot help;
  • the mixed case keeps both sentences.

Verification run:

  • npx jest --config jest.config.json --no-coverage --runInBand src/backend/shared/compile/__tests__/ — 471 passed, 20 suites
  • npx tsc --noEmit — clean
  • npx prettier --check and npx eslint on the touched files — clean

Shared surface

src/backend/shared/compile/ is part of the byte-identical surface. Mirror PR: Autonomy-Logic/openplc-web#831. Both files verified identical across the two repos.

Still open

Whether declaring memory in the program should publish it over Modbus automatically, as Delta and Siemens do, is the FR02 decision and belongs in its own demand rather than in this fix. Noted on DOPE-744 for Thiago.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Unbacked memory addresses now point users to Modbus Buffer Mapping or S7comm data blocks under Servers. Physical I/O addresses continue to direct users to check their producer locations.
    • When both memory and physical I/O addresses are unbacked, the guidance includes remedies for both types.

A located %MX variable with nothing exposing memory already failed the
build with "Nothing produces %MX on this target". The remedy that followed
sent the user to the Device, Remote Devices or Servers branches, and the
first two can never help: pins, VPP slots, EtherCAT channels and Modbus
master points all produce physical I/O. Memory has one producer, a Modbus
server's Buffer Mapping, and the message never named it.

The remedy now splits by what was actually offended. A physical area keeps
the existing sentence, a memory area gets its own, and a project offending
in both gets both, still as the single remedy line the grouping promises.

This does not change what the compiler accepts. Sizing memory from a
declaration stays refused, per FR02 and BR14.

Walkthrough

Unbacked-location guidance now distinguishes memory addresses from physical I/O addresses. Memory guidance names Modbus Buffer Mapping or S7comm data blocks under Servers. Physical I/O guidance retains producer instructions. Tests cover memory-only and combined cases.

Explanation

The title names the main change: memory addresses that lack a backing producer now point to the Modbus Buffer Mapping, which can size them. It also gives the ticket ID. It is specific and matches the summary and the description.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has a References section with the Jira link and a clear account of the bug, the change, and the tests. It also covers verification and the shared-surface note. The DOD checklist and Contributor License Agreement items are present but unchecked. The 'Description of the changes proposed' heading from the template is missing, and the change is described under 'The change' instead. The 'Link to Jira task' is included as a list item and not a separate heading. These are minor gaps.

A rabbit checked the memory map,

Modbus mapping, S7 blocks,

The tests now check each path in sight.

Comment thread src/backend/shared/compile/steps/compute-io-image.ts
The memory remedy claimed a Modbus Buffer Mapping was the only producer of
memory. An S7comm server maps int_memory, dint_memory and lint_memory, so
it backs %MW, %MD and %ML too, and the sentence sent those users to the
wrong screen.

Both homes are named now. %MX is still Modbus only, since s7comm_types.h
has no buffer code for bool_memory, so the wording names the two places
without promising either one serves every prefix.

🟡 Minor · Restrict the %MX guidance to Modbus Buffer Mapping. · compute-io-image.ts:832-846

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restrict the %MX guidance to Modbus Buffer Mapping.

The bare-metal target cannot select an S7comm bool_memory block. The current message names S7comm data blocks for every %M prefix, including %MX. This can direct users to a configuration that cannot size %MX.

Keep the S7comm option for %MW, %MD, and %ML.
