MacOS app freezes when interacting with app before video has ended

• I start a video on immich in MacOS app (v0.9.35-3).
• I interact with the app (e.g., click on any button, except on a new video) or attempt to close the window showing the video before the video has ended.
• The app freezes until I kill it.

Thanks for the detailed report and the logs.

I found that video playback uses synchronous libmpv calls on the UI thread when leaving the viewer or closing the app. On macOS, those calls can block while the native video surface is still active, which explains why the whole app becomes unresponsive.

I’ve changed the video lifecycle so stop, load, and shutdown commands are queued asynchronously, and native cleanup no longer blocks the UI thread. This applies to videos from Immich, Nextcloud, and local folders alike.

The fix will be included in the next build.

I have the following feedback:

• While, on v0.9.40, I can advance to next videos using the arrow keys, if the next media happens to be a photo, it freezes again until i restart.
• Since videos open in their own window, if i click on another video in the bottom panel, the main window focuses and places itself "over" the just selected video (I have to switch to the video window each time I select a new video).
• When i close a video window by clicking on the red x in the window decorator, the app freezes again until i restart.

Unfortunately, the update to v0.9.41 has introduced crashes when switching between media, but only sometimes.

0.9.41 is the release that moved macOS off its own video window and into the picture area, which is what you asked for. That also moves it onto a different video output path, and this assertion comes from that path. So it is a regression from the fix, not a coincidence.

The message itself is from inside libmpv, in the code that crops a decoded frame to its visible size.

1. Is "Hardware acceleration for video playback" on or off in your settings? It is off by default. Please tell me which it is, and try the same switching with the opposite setting. Hardware decoded frames on macOS often carry padded dimensions, so this one question splits the problem in half.
2. The diagnostics log from that run. You already start with --debug, so ~/Library/Application Support/FerrumPix/logs/diagnostics.log should have it. The lines around the crash are the interesting part.
3. What were you switching between? Resolution and codec of the two clips, and whether a photo was involved, since that combination bit you before.

I would rather not guess at a fix without those.

1. "Hardware acceleration for video playback" was off, but the app crashes now with both, hw acceleration on and off, instantly after trying to play a video.
2. I attached the diagnostic file. Sorry, it is German...
3. Now I only have to select a video for the app to crash.

Maybe important: I tried also with local videos, which worked just fine.
