fix(challenge): answer a repeated relay receipt idempotently - #17
Conversation
A miner rerunning run-v2 for a round already UPLOADED resubmits the same relay receipt. relay_receipt_v2 then issued a fresh RetrievalRequest (new request_id and nonce), and the relay refused it with 400: its retrieve() commit raises RelayError "one outstanding challenge per exact object/key" because the first retrieval of the same delta still has deadline_beacon (now+10) >= the serve beacon. The relay maps RelayError to 400; the master let the httpx.HTTPStatusError escape as a 500. The 400 is a correct relay refusal, not a relay bug, so the relay is unchanged. After the receipt is verified, the master now looks up its master-acceptance for (run_id, w, hotkey): the same receipt gets the stored signed acceptance back without contacting the relay; a different receipt gets 409 RELAY_RECEIPT_CONFLICT. A first submission follows the unchanged path. Any HTTP status error from the relay acks or retrieval call now maps to a 502 ChallengeError instead of a 500. Rejected: making the relay idempotent for a new signed request. The master never reuses a request id, and the first answer stays authoritative. The after_upload probe only checked that the delta and relay receipts did not change, so it passed while the rerun exited 2 on the master's 500. Now that a repeated receipt is answered idempotently, the probe also requires rc 0. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The kill-mid-round probe recorded killed_after_job_staged but never checked it. If run-v2 finished before the poll saw the island-job row, or the 120 s deadline passed before staging, the rerun returned UPLOADED and the harness reported PASS without testing a resume. Raise before the rerun unless the process was alive when killed and the island-job row exists; main() records it and exits 1. The unit test stubs a run-v2 that exits before staging. …ond acceptance relay_receipt_v2 looked up existing master-acceptance records only in its first transaction, then left it to call the relay over HTTP. A submission delayed on the relay (past the ~30 s challenge window) could see no acceptance there, while a concurrent submission for the same (run_id, w, hotkey) was accepted meanwhile; its second transaction then wrote a second master-acceptance with a different received_drand. The lookup moves into _accepted_receipt_v2 and runs at the start of both transactions. _tx is BEGIN IMMEDIATE under the store lock, so the re-check is atomic with the write: the same receipt returns the stored acceptance, another receipt raises 409 RELAY_RECEIPT_CONFLICT. First transaction and first submissions are unchanged. Tests wrap RelayClient.retrieval so submission A is accepted while B awaits the relay, against the real challenge store and relay. Before the fix both write two acceptance rows; after, one row, with B getting the stored acceptance (same receipt) or 409 (different receipt). …nsors test_prepared_profile_opening_metadata_without_tensor_calls patches hypertrain.auditor.replay.unpack_state (and pack_state, init_params, ...) with `forbidden`. ChallengeStore imports hypertrain.auditor.worker lazily; for the audit-honest param that import happens inside the trap. When it is the first import in the process, worker.py's module-level `from hypertrain.auditor.replay import unpack_state` binds `forbidden`. monkeypatch restores replay but not worker's copy, so a later test_v2_weights_bridge.py run hits it in execute_audit_v2 and fails with "opening allocated tensors" (the "This portal is not running" teardown error is a consequence). Repro (host): pytest test_capacity_outer_v2.py test_v2_weights_bridge.py red before, green after. Relay receipt file not needed for the failure, so a leaked anyio portal there is ruled out. A sys.modules probe over all 64 params shows auditor.worker is the only cold import that captures a trapped name. CI sharding only exposed it. Pre-importing the worker binds the real functions; trap unchanged. No subprocess guard: it would test Python import semantics, not this test; the file pair is the regression proof. Summary
Follow-up to #16. A miner that reruns
run-v2for a round that is already UPLOADED now gets a clean no-op (exit 0,{"status": "UPLOADED"}) instead of HTTP 500, and the multi-round harness fails if its mid-round SIGKILL did not hit a staged job.Why
After #16 the crash-resume case passes (job re-emission is idempotent), but a rerun after UPLOADED still failed:
POST /v2/relay-receiptsreturned 500 because the master asked the relay for a second live retrieval of the same object (POST /v1/retrievals-> 400) andrelay_receipt_v2let thehttpx.HTTPStatusErrorescape. No double send, no state change, but a 500 and rc=2 for a harmless restart. CodeRabbit also noted (PR #16, minor) that the SIGKILL probe could pass without having killed anything. What changed
src/hypertrain/challenge/store.pyrelay_receipt_v2: a repeated receipt for the same(run_id, w, hotkey)returns the stored master acceptance without calling the relay; a different receipt for an accepted key stays refused (409RELAY_RECEIPT_CONFLICT); a relayHTTPStatusErroris mapped to a clean 502 instead of an unhandled 500.
