Fortress Security Guide

⚠️ IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTICE

COMPLIANCE FEATURES ARE IN ALPHA/EXPERIMENTAL STATUS

This documentation contains examples and configuration options for GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS compliance features. These features are currently in Alpha/Experimental status and should be used with caution in production environments.

  • Compliance frameworks are implemented but require extensive testing
  • Core functionality works but may need refinement for specific use cases
  • Audit logging is partially implemented and being enhanced
  • Policy conditions are functional but may need customization
  • Using this system for compliance-critical workloads requires THOROUGH TESTING AND VALIDATION

Do not deploy Fortress in production environments requiring regulatory compliance without conducting comprehensive testing and validation of the compliance features for your specific requirements.

See the Production Readiness Matrix for current implementation status.

Overview

Fortress is designed with security as the primary concern. This guide covers the security model, features, and best practices for deploying and maintaining a secure Fortress deployment.

Security Model

Defense in Depth

Fortress implements multiple layers of security controls:

  1. Authentication: Verify user/service identity
  2. Authorization: Enforce access controls
  3. Encryption: Protect data at rest and in transit
  4. Audit: Monitor and log all security events
  5. Network Security: Secure network communications
  6. Infrastructure Security: Secure underlying infrastructure

Zero Trust Architecture

Fortress follows zero trust principles:

  • Never trust, always verify
  • Least privilege access
  • Micro-segmentation
  • Continuous monitoring
  • Assume breach mentality

Authentication

Supported Methods

JWT Bearer Tokens

# Generate JWT token
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/v1/auth/login \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "username": "admin",
    "password": "secure-password"
  }'

# Use JWT token
curl -X GET http://localhost:8080/api/v1/databases \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <jwt-token>"

API Keys

# Create API key
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/v1/auth/api-keys \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <jwt-token>" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "name": "production-api-key",
    "permissions": ["read", "write"],
    "expires_at": "2024-12-31T23:59:59Z"
  }'

# Use API key
curl -X GET http://localhost:8080/api/v1/databases \
  -H "X-API-Key: <api-key>"

OAuth 2.0

# Configure OAuth provider
fortress config set auth.oauth.provider google
fortress config set auth.oauth.client_id <client-id>
fortress config set auth.oauth.client_secret <client-secret>

SAML

# Configure SAML provider
fortress config set auth.saml.idp_url <idp-url>
fortress config set auth.saml.entity_id <entity-id>
fortress config set auth.saml.certificate_path <cert-path>

Best Practices

  1. Use Strong Authentication Methods

    • Prefer JWT or OAuth 2.0 over basic auth
    • Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA)
    • Use short-lived tokens
  2. Secure Token Management

    • Store tokens securely (environment variables, secret managers)
    • Rotate tokens regularly
    • Revoke compromised tokens immediately
  3. Authentication Configuration

    [auth]
    jwt_secret = "your-very-secure-jwt-secret"
    token_expiry = "1h"
    refresh_token_expiry = "7d"

    [auth.oauth]
    enabled = true
    provider = "google"
    client_id = "your-client-id"
    client_secret = "your-client-secret"

Authorization

Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)

Built-in Roles

  • admin: Full system access
  • user: Read/write access to assigned resources
  • readonly: Read-only access to assigned resources
  • auditor: Read-only access to audit logs

Custom Roles

# Create custom role
curl -X POST http://localhost:8080/api/v1/auth/roles \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <admin-token>" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "name": "database-admin",
    "permissions": [
      "database:create",
      "database:read",
      "database:write",
      "database:delete",
      "key:rotate"
    ],
    "resource_constraints": {
      "databases": ["production-*"],
      "tenants": ["company-a"]
    }
  }'

Permission Model

{
  "permissions": {
    "database": ["create", "read", "write", "delete"],
    "table": ["create", "read", "write", "delete"],
    "key": ["read", "rotate", "delete"],
    "audit": ["read", "export"],
    "admin": ["users", "roles", "config"]
  }
}

Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC)

{
  "policy": {
    "name": "data-access-policy",
