Lifts the known limitation of #301: in the disk tree, numbered file names sorted as text, so 100 Snooze.m4a came before 2 Paradise.m4a. They now sort by value, in both folder trees.

Approach: an application collation, not a stored key

src/natural_order.rs defines compare: runs of ASCII digits compare by value, and everything else compares character by character, case-folded. Two names equal under those rules (07 and 7, Abc and abc) are then ordered by their bytes, so it is a total order, as SQLite requires of a collation. Digit runs are compared by length then digits, never parsed, so a 40-digit run still has its place.

It is registered on every pooled connection as the collation natural_order, through SqliteConnectOptions::collation in Database::connect. The name is not natural, which SQLite reads as the keyword of NATURAL JOIN; that first attempt was a syntax error.

Why not a sort key stored at scan time:

  • It needs a migration and a backfill.
  • It needs a column that every write path (scan, upload commit, move) keeps in step.
  • And the filed folders would need a second one.

The collation needs none of that, and the order still comes from SQL, where LIMIT/OFFSET cuts the pages. The one rule it brings is written on the module: no schema object (index, view, CHECK) may name it, or the database would stop opening in a tool that lacks it. Only queries name it.

What changes:

  • Disk tree (library_tree.rs): folders, then tracks, ORDER BY … COLLATE natural_order. The range on relative_path that selects a folder stays in BINARY, so it is still answered from the (library_id, relative_path) index. Received keeps its artist/title order.
  • Filed folders (library_folders.rs): siblings by name in the same order, so both trees agree. The client's folderOutline uses localeCompare with numeric: true for the same reason.

Letters still order by code point after case folding (é after z), as NOCASE did; this is not a locale collation.

Tests

  • natural_order unit tests:

    • numbers by value (1, 2, 10, 100, Disc 1/9/10);
    • case folding beyond ASCII;
    • only identical names comparing equal, with the order antisymmetric;
    • a run longer than any integer type.
  • numbered_names_sort_by_value_in_both_trees (native_api) checks:

    • the disk tree's folders disc 1, Disc 2, Disc 10;
    • its tracks 1, 2, 10, 100;
    • a page cut at offset=4&limit=2 giving 2, 10;
    • filed folders vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 10.

    It fails when the disk tree's old order is restored, and again when the filed folders' old order is restored.

  • folders.test.ts: numbered siblings outline by value.

Validation

  • cargo fmt --all --check, cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings
  • cargo test --all-features: all targets
  • webapp: lint (the same 7 warnings in refresh.css), tsc, 190 unit tests, build, the 16 folder Playwright tests

Summary by CodeRabbit

File and folder names sorted as text, so 100 came before 2. A natural_order collation, registered on every pooled connection, compares digit runs by value and letters case-folded, with a byte tiebreak so it stays a total order. The disk tree's folders and tracks, and the filed folders, order by it in SQL, where their pages are cut. No column and no migration: the collation is named by queries only, never by the schema.

📝 Walkthrough

Layer / File(s) Summary
Comparateur et collation SQLite
src/natural_order.rs, src/lib.rs, src/database.rs
src/services/library_folders.rs, src/services/library_tree.rs, tests/native_api.rs
webapp/src/api/folders.ts, webapp/src/api/folders.test.ts

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1848f

The natural ordering change is consistent across server trees and the web folder outline, with no confirmed merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1848f

The change centralizes display ordering without changing library access, folder identity, or mutation permissions. The inspected paths introduce no material security risk or stored-data migration.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Names present in a library's catalogue affect ordering of that library's results. In the inspected paths, the new comparator does not expand the selected libraries, expose additional records, or introduce a privileged operation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The production folder picker preserves resource identity across the ordering change: entries invoke selection with folder.id rather than an array index. Server membership checks remain independent of client ordering, so the inspected change does not turn display position into access authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The changed listing paths are reads and introduce no new persistent transition requiring cancellation, retry, or rollback recovery. Keeping the comparator out of schema objects limits recovery coupling to the application's read-query implementation.

59-59: Vérifier que next_if(char::is_ascii_digit) compile.

Peekable::next_if attend un FnOnce(&char) -> bool. char::is_ascii_digit a la signature fn(&self) -> bool, soit fn(&char) -> bool. Le passage direct est donc valide.

src/database.rs: 1

src/services/library_tree.rs: 2

folderOutline re-sorted siblings with localeCompare, a second rule beside the server's natural_order collation: "Ä 2" went first in the picker and last on the cards. The outline now keeps the order the server answered, which the cards already draw.
