What this changes

A UI review found that the utility pages read like admin forms. This PR reworks four of them in the web client. There are no server changes.

Radio: a grid of station cards

  • Each station is a card: its image (the server-fetched artwork_hash from feat(artwork): podcast covers and radio station images #342, through Artwork, falling back to the radio symbol), its name, the stream address and the station page link. A round play button sits on the image, named Listen to {name} / Stop {name}.
  • Add station in the page header opens a native <dialog> (showModal, like the folder picker) that holds the form you already had. Validation, the image address field and its hint, the mixed-content warning (radio.mixedContent / isBlockedAsMixedContent) and the "saving replaces every field" note are unchanged.
  • Edit and Delete live behind a per-card "⋯" menu. Delete asks for confirmation with window.confirm, the same pattern the folder delete uses.
  • The busy guard still covers everything it covered before. While a save is in flight the dialog's fields, Save and Cancel are disabled, and Escape, the backdrop and the close button cannot dismiss it, so the form cannot be put away under a request that is about to report into it. The cards' menus and the Add button are disabled during any write. The play buttons are never disabled.
  • Focus comes back to whatever opened the dialog (the Add button, or the card's "⋯") once the dialog has left the page.
  • The menu is a new shared component, components/action-menu.tsx. It uses the track menu's panel and entries (.track-menu, .track-menu-item) and the same ARIA menu keys (arrows, Home/End, Escape, Tab), but it is anchored to its button. Tab and Shift+Tab hand focus back to the "⋯" button and let the Tab run from there, so focus lands on what follows the button (or precedes it), as the track menu does with its row. This was raised in review; before the fix, Tab ran from the menu at the end of the body and focus fell on the body. It is portalled to the body for the track menu's reason: the page's rise animation would otherwise move a fixed child. I didn't reuse TrackMenu itself because it is built around a song.

Podcasts: a real empty state

EmptyState (in page-shell.tsx) takes three new optional props: icon, detail and an actions slot. Existing callers are unchanged. The podcasts page shows:

  • the podcast icon;
  • "No podcasts yet.";
  • a sentence on what podcasts do here: an administrator subscribes, the server downloads the episodes, and every account can listen.

Managers (overview.can_manage) also get Add your first podcast, which focuses the feed-address field. Readers see the explanation with nothing to press. #345 landed while this branch was open and has been merged in: its podcasts.shared hint under the subscribe field is kept unchanged (the field now also carries the ref the action focuses). The two texts do different jobs. The hint warns the person subscribing, at the field, that the show is visible to everyone. The empty state tells anyone, readers included, what the page is for before anything is on it.

Podcasts: shows and episodes side by side from 1024 px

  • From a window width of 1024 px (64rem), the shows sit in a left column (a third of the room, at most 22rem) and the open show's episodes sit beside them. Below 1024 px the page stacks as before: the episodes open under the list when asked for, and close again with "Hide".
  • No show selected: on a wide window the first show opens by default, rather than showing a prompt. The panel is what the page is for, so a prompt would be an empty box asking for a click that nearly everyone makes on the first show anyway. A default also needs no extra string, and it keeps the address clean, because the default is not written into it. A show named in the address that no longer exists (unsubscribed, or a stale link) falls back the same way. On a narrow window nothing opens until asked, as today.
  • The open show is now ?channel= in the address (validateSearch on the route). Choosing a show pushes a history entry, so Back returns to the show before, and a reload keeps the one being read. Unsubscribing the open show replaces the entry, so Back never leads to a show that is gone.
  • In the two-panel layout a show's button chooses rather than toggles, since the panel always shows one. The open show is marked by aria-pressed, a tone and an accent edge, and its button has aria-controls pointing at the panel.
  • Focus stays on the button that chose the show. A visually hidden role="status" line ("Showing the episodes of {title}.") announces the change. The reading order is the list, then the panel.
  • The episode panel is sticky and capped at the window height above the player bar. A long feed scrolls inside it, so the shows stay within reach.
  • Everything else is unchanged: the subscribe form and its podcasts.shared hint, the empty state, refresh, unsubscribe, download/play/bookmark, playback in the player bar (an episode keeps playing when another show opens), and the reader vs manager differences.

On "the workspace layout should show at 1920 and below": I measured before changing anything. At 1920, 1440 and 1366 the content column is the window minus the sidebar: 1664, 1184 and 1110 px wide, with 1552, 1088 and 1014 px usable inside its padding. That is under the 105rem (1680 px) cap, so the 150rem widening only matters above about 1936 px. On every workspace page, the lists, grids and rows already span that full width; the only elements under 85% of it are prose with deliberate limits (header description 28rem, Quality help 62ch, the To sort note 48rem) and small content-sized parts (the section tabs, buttons). There was no inner max-width to relax. What looked sparse was layout: the episodes opening under one short list. The two-panel podcasts page addresses that.

Folders: To sort sits apart, and is not counted

Decision: To sort now has its own section under the user's folders, headed "Kept by WaveFlow". The section has a one-line explanation: To sort gathers every track that is in no folder, WaveFlow keeps it itself, it is not counted among the folders above, and it cannot be renamed, moved or deleted. Its card is drawn in outline (dashed border, no fill) and keeps the "Automatic" badge. The header count now reads "N folder(s) created in this library", and when there are none the page says "No folder has been created in this library yet."

Why this option rather than only a distinct style inside the same list:

  • The confusion came from the count and the list disagreeing. As long as To sort sat in the list the header counts, a badge could only explain the mismatch after you noticed it. Moving it out makes the count and the list agree by construction: the list under the header holds exactly the counted folders.
  • The explanation needs a place to live. A heading plus one sentence is the cheapest way to say "system folder, not counted, can't be renamed or deleted" without a tooltip.
  • I said "created in this library" rather than "you created": in a shared library, folders are created by its owners and managers, so "you" would be wrong for a listener and for a second manager.

Drag-and-drop onto To sort, and opening it, work as before.

A wider "workspace" layout

  • Each route now declares its layout with staticData: { layout: "workspace" } (typed through StaticDataRouteOption). It is set on /radio, /podcasts, /folders and the /maintenance hub, and the hub covers Needs attention, Missing files and Quality.
  • Shell reads it with useMatches and puts .workspace on <main>. The width therefore holds while a page is still loading, and all the hub's sections share it.
  • main.workspace widens the column from the contained 105rem to 150rem. Editorial pages (albums, artists, now playing, etc.) are untouched.
  • On a phone, min(100%, …) resolves to the width the phone rules already give, so the 16 px gutter stays and nothing scrolls sideways. The radio grid goes two to a row there. A short window with the compact rail is covered by the same test.

One small related fix: a <dialog> that is a direct child of a page section no longer takes part in the page's fe-rise entrance animation. Without this, the station dialog appeared invisible for the animation's delay and then faded in under the click. The folder picker benefits from the same rule.

All new styles are in one commented block at the end of styles.css. All new strings are in English and French, next to the existing radio.*, podcasts.* and folders.* keys.

Tests

New spec: webapp/e2e/workspace-pages.spec.ts (desktop and mobile projects):

  • adds a station in the dialog (with the address refusal), checks the card, the menu by keyboard (first entry focused, arrows, Escape gives focus back to "⋯"), edits through the menu, declines and then confirms a delete; expectNoWcagViolations on the dialog, the grid and the open menu;
  • the dialog stays open, with Escape refused, while its save is held in flight;
  • podcasts empty state for a manager (WCAG; the action focuses the feed field) and for a reader (no button, no field);
  • folders: To sort is in "Kept by WaveFlow" and not in "Folders", the count wording, and the no-folder line;
  • layout: at 2560×1440, main on every workspace page is more than 400 px wider than on the albums page, which stays at 1680 px; on a phone and in a 1024×640 window there is no horizontal overflow, and the phone gutter is 16 px;
  • podcasts in two panels, at 1440×900, 1024×768 and 1024×640:
    • with no show named, the first opens;
    • the panel's left edge is at or past the list's right edge, and their tops overlap;
    • there is no horizontal overflow;
    • choosing another show swaps the episodes, writes ?channel=, keeps focus on its button and announces the change; expectNoWcagViolations runs on the two-panel page;
    • Back returns to the first show, and a reload with ?channel= keeps the named one;
  • podcasts, other cases:
    • a stale ?channel= opens the first show;
    • a 40-episode feed scrolls inside a panel no taller than the window, and the other show is still a click away;
    • on a phone the panel is closed until asked for, opens below the list, and closes with "Hide";
  • the station menu by keyboard: Tab from the menu lands on the next card's play button, and Shift+Tab on this card's play button.

Updated in place, because the change broke them: the radio tests in studio-nocturne.spec.ts (form in a dialog, edit/delete through the menu, .station-grid / .station-cover selectors), and the three folder tests that found To sort in the "Folders" list.

Inversion check

For each new test I broke the code it protects, rebuilt dist, watched the test fail for the right reason, then restored the code and confirmed with git diff:

# Code broken Test Fails on
1 main never gets .workspace (main.tsx) wide-window layout /radio main is 1680 px, expected > 2080
2 main.workspace { width: 150rem } without min(100%, …) phone / short-window fit horizontal overflow of 1632 px (phone) and 1988 px (desktop)
3 delete without window.confirm add/edit/delete a declined delete still deletes: the card count drops to 0 and a DELETE is sent
4 onCancel no longer prevents Escape while saving dialog held open the dialog is gone after Escape
5 the menu no longer focuses its first entry add/edit/delete Edit menu item not focused
6 focus not handed back after the dialog closes add/edit/delete Add station not focused
7 "Add your first podcast" focuses nothing podcasts manager Feed address not focused
8 the action gated on enabled instead of can_manage podcasts reader one button where none is expected
9 empty state without its explanation both podcasts tests explanation text missing
10 To sort drawn back inside the counted "Folders" list To sort apart 2 links in "Folders", expected 1
11 count wording back to "{count} folder" To sort apart "1 folder created in this library" not found
12 .podcast-workspace is display: block (no grid) side by side at 1440 right/overlap false
13 no default show on a wide window side by side at 1024×768 no "Night Shift" panel
14 every choice replaces instead of pushing side by side at 1440 after Back, no "Night Shift" panel (Back left the page)
15 status line left empty side by side at 1440 no "Showing the episodes of Day Shift." status
16 episode panel max-height removed long feed panel not scrollable (scrollHeight = clientHeight = 3264)
17 two-panel breakpoint applied at any width phone stacking a panel is open before anything was asked for
18 Tab closes the menu with onClose(false) (the review finding) Tab out of the menu "Listen to FIP" not focused

Each file was restored with a checkout from HEAD, and the diff was clean after every one. dist was rebuilt for each run and once more at the end.

Results

All run in webapp/:

  • bunx biome check .: clean (the same 10 pre-existing warnings as main, none added)
  • bun run typecheck: clean
  • bun run test: 36 files, 279 tests passed
  • bun run build: ok
  • Playwright, with WAVEFLOW_E2E_PORT=4631 and a fresh dist:
    • Full suite, before merging main: 413 passed, 24 skipped, 1 failed.
      • The one failure was lists what needs attention, splits a credit on the second click (desktop). It timed out clicking the armed "Confirm" button, which disarms itself after 4 s, because the WCAG scan before the click ran past 4 s under four workers. It passed 6/6 when rerun on its own. It is timing-sensitive and not related to this change, and its page only changed width.
      • subscribes to a podcast… also failed once, in an earlier run of the affected specs, because it checks the write synchronously right after the click. It passed 8/8 when rerun alone.
    • After merging main (fix(podcasts): bound the episodes a channel lists and refuse a downgrading redirect #345, chore: bump the github-actions-all group with 4 updates #346):
      • workspace-pages.spec.ts + smart-playlists-and-podcasts.spec.ts: 38 passed, 2 skipped.
      • The radio, folder and maintenance tests in studio-nocturne.spec.ts: 67 passed, 1 skipped.
    • With the two-panel podcasts page and the Tab fix (main unchanged since):
      • workspace-pages.spec.ts: 23 passed, 7 skipped (the skips are tests limited to one project).
      • smart-playlists-and-podcasts.spec.ts: 23 passed, 1 skipped. It needed no change: on a wide window the "Episodes" button opens the show it names, and on a phone it toggles as before.
      • Full suite: 422 passed, 30 skipped, 0 failed (four workers).

Summary by CodeRabbit

Radio becomes a grid of station cards with an add/edit dialog and a per-card menu, the podcasts page explains itself when empty, To sort sits apart from the counted folders, and the utility pages take more of a wide window.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to f0eed

The workspace changes appear ready to merge after normal checks; no actionable issue is established by the supplied evidence.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to f0eed

Podcast links now preserve the selected channel, but the selection remains limited to channels returned by the server. Existing authentication and mutation permissions remain in place. No introduced security concern was established in the reviewed flows; incomplete broader coverage limits assurance.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — For the inspected URL-selection path, a crafted link can influence which server-listed channel is displayed, but cannot directly supply an arbitrary channel identifier to the detail query or trigger a write. No expanded tenant, datastore or service authority was established through this path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Podcast pages remain under session-gated routing. Manager capability flags govern mutation controls in the client, while inspected backend handlers independently require write access and service-level podcast-manager authority. URL selection does not replace those enforcement points.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Radio mutations retain explicit station identity and the existing busy guard. The new dialog blocks normal dismissal during saving, clears the draft only after success, and preserves it after failure. Successful deletion requests playback cleanup for the deleted station ID rather than relying on a captured playback selection.

…rd menu from its button

The channels sit on the left and the open channel's episodes beside them; the open channel is kept in the address, and a wide window opens the first one when none is named. Tab out of the station menu now starts from its button instead of running off the page.

…back everywhere, steadier tests (#350)

* refactor(webapp): build the card menu on the track menu's popup

ActionMenu (#348) carried its own copy of the panel, its keys and its outside-close listeners beside PopupMenu (#347). It is now a button over PopupMenu, which gains an optional icon, a danger entry, an id, a class, and a placement above its button when there is no room below. The placement is a pure function with its own tests. onClose now says whether focus goes back to the opener: yes for a key or an entry, no for a press elsewhere.

Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>

* fix(webapp): follow media queries through onMediaChange everywhere

The reduced-motion hook and the podcasts two-panel hook called addEventListener on a MediaQueryList directly, which throws on a Safari older than 14. Both now go through the fallback #349 added for the theme.

Signed-off-by: InstaZDLL <github.105mh@8shield.net>

* test(webapp): wait for the writes and the confirmation the slow runs missed

The podcast test read the route's writes straight after a click, before the route had seen them, so they are now polled. The split test's accessibility scan can outlast the four seconds the confirmation stands on a loaded machine, so it is armed again if it lapsed.
