build(docker): move the image from bookworm to trixie - #411
Runtime stage: debian:bookworm-slim → debian:trixie-slim. FFmpeg goes from 5.1 to 7.1 (7.1.5-0+deb13u1 today).
Builder: rust:1.98-bookworm → rust:1.98-trixie, so the binary links against the glibc it runs on (2.41). Both tags publish amd64 and arm64/v8. The web stage is unchanged.
CHANGELOG: the consequence for operators, under ## [Unreleased].
bookworm appeared nowhere else in the tracked tree: not in the workflows, packaging/, the docs or the README.
The re-measurement, checked in the code
use_quality_decoder (src/services/quality/analysis.rs) runs at boot and executes DELETE FROM track_quality WHERE version <> ? OR decoder <> ?, where decoder is the SHA-256 of the whole ffmpeg -version output (src/quality/mod.rs, decoder_digest). A new FFmpeg build therefore drops every row, and a lossless file with no current row reads pending (quality_verdict_sql!) until the background analysis, WAVEFLOW_QUALITY_PARALLELISM files at a time (1 by default, 0 turns it off), measures it again. The CHANGELOG entry says so and names the setting.
Verified
On a Fedora 44 host (x86_64, Docker 29.8.1), from this commit:
Test targets against trixie's FFmpeg: in rust:1.98-trixie with Debian's ffmpeg (7.1.5) installed, cargo test --locked --all-features -j 2 --test media --test quality --test canvas: canvas 15/15, media 16/16, quality 16/16. --lib as well: 286/286. CI keeps running them against Ubuntu 24.04's FFmpeg 6.1.
Image: docker build succeeds (linux/amd64); inside, Debian 13.7, glibc 2.41, FFmpeg 7.1.5. Booted with no configuration: /ready answers 200 and the HEALTHCHECK reports healthy. 801 MB against 814 MB for 2.0.1.
Trivy 0.76.1, --scanners vuln, both images scanned in one run against the same database (2026-11-01):

The issue's 2026-10-29 measurement of trixie + ffmpeg + curl was 810 / 1 / 211, so the figures agree. The one critical left is libxml2 CVE-2026-6653 (affected), which is also in the bookworm image. Removing curl (#396) is the next step on the issue's table.
linux/arm64, once, on GitHub's native ubuntu-24.04-arm runner, from this commit through a throwaway branch and workflow since deleted (run 41265898228): the image builds; inside, aarch64, Debian 13.7, glibc 2.41, FFmpeg 7.1.5; booted, /ready answers 200 and the HEALTHCHECK reports healthy. The three targets in rust:1.98-trixie on arm64: canvas 15/15, media 16/16, quality 16/16.
Not verified
Trivy was run on the amd64 image only.
Nothing on a pull request builds the Dockerfile; the arm64 check above was a one-off, and the release workflow still builds the image for the first time on a tag.

Walkthrough

Summary
Suggested labels:scope: docs, size: s
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b092e
Release operators may miss the quality-measurement reset notice, and the required ARM64 image startup remains unvalidated before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to b092e
The builder and runtime move together to Trixie without changing the application's configured identity or privileges. Quality measurements are deliberately invalidated and rebuilt. No introduced security weakness was established, but produced-image behavior across architectures and actual deployment sequencing were not independently verified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The dependency change applies to rebuilt server containers, including their FFmpeg installation. The Dockerfile introduces no additional mount, credential setting, or privileged execution configuration.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The existing boot sequence checks the database's instance-key binding before configuring quality invalidation. A mismatched key/database pair is rejected before this derived-state transition.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Decoder-generation ownership is process-local: overlapping old and new analyzers could repopulate stale-decoder measurements after invalidation because reads rely on the content hash. The unchanged implementation therefore depends on the documented prohibition against two servers sharing a volume. Actual overlap was not established, so this is an operational limitation rather than a retained PR security concern.

Explanation
