Works great but the icons don't appear, makes me confused sometimes

When installing the app, i fired it up but the icons didnt appear. had to expirment which button is which aside from the red and green which were obvious in their function

Thanks for reporting this — you're right, without the icons it's confusing.

Root cause in the current main (src/main.py v2.5.0): the toolbar buttons are not image files, they are emoji characters as button text (📂 💾 ⏺ ⏵ 🔁 ⚙) with font Noto Color Emoji.

If that font is not installed on your system, those glyphs render as blank / tofu boxes — which matches what you describe (only the red record and green play are obvious by color/position).

Quick check / workaround:

fc-list | grep -i emoji

If empty, install the emoji font, e.g. on Arch/Manjaro:

sudo pacman -S noto-fonts-emoji

then restart the app.

Proper fix on my side:

• don't rely only on emoji font — add tooltips + accessible names (Open/Save/Record/Play/Loop/Settings)
• fallback to text labels when the glyph is missing
• optionally bundle assets/icon.png as window icon

Could you tell me your distro + desktop + output of the fc-list command? That confirms if it's the missing-font case.

Note: my local copy is newer than what's pushed to main right now, so I'll sync the repo first and then ship the tooltip/fallback fix.

Update: just pushed commit 78fe25d ("fix: thread-safe hotkeys, scroll fallback, install user, button tooltips") which addresses the confusion directly: every toolbar button now has a hover tooltip (Open macro / Save macro / Record (F8) / Play-Stop (F9) / Loop playback / Playback speed / Settings), so the buttons are identifiable even when the emoji glyphs don't render.

The underlying font workaround still applies: the glyphs need an emoji font (sudo pacman -S noto-fonts-emoji, then restart the app; check with fc-list | grep -i emoji). If tooltips + font still leave anything unclear, a screenshot of what you see would help.
