Closes #2248

Root cause

effectiveSizingPct (cmd/main.go:288) returns TargetCoverage if it is set, and otherwise cfg.Coverage. On an --input-csv run without --coverage, cfg.Coverage is the unused flag default, 80. Both createDryRunResult (cmd/multi_service_helpers.go:282) and executePurchase (:294) pass that value to generatePurchaseID (cmd/main.go:326, formatted at :346). The CSV sizing itself uses determineCSVCoverage (cmd/multi_service_csv.go:27), which returns 100 when the flag was not passed. So IDs said 80pct while the run bought 100%.

Fix

runCSVPurchases (cmd/multi_service.go) sets cfg.Coverage = determineCSVCoverage(cfg) before any purchase, so the label and the sizing come from one function. TargetCoverage still wins, and the non-CSV path is untouched.

  • Without --coverage, the ID says 100pct.
  • With an explicit --coverage N, it says Npct.

Idempotency and compatibility

The purchase ID is not an idempotency key. generatePurchaseID always includes a timestamp and a random UUID suffix, so no two runs share one. Replay detection uses Describe calls against existing commitments (TestCSVReplay_SecondRunBuysNothing), and only the label of new IDs changes. Of the CSV purchase paths, only RDS sends the generated ID to AWS (ReservedDBInstanceId); ElastiCache names its own commitments.

Commit (<= 400 additions+deletions)

  1. fix(csv): label purchase IDs with the coverage the CSV run applied (33)

Local verification (macOS)

  • go vet ./..., one go test -count=1 ./..., golangci-lint (0 issues) and scripts/test-git-secrets-allowlist.sh (44/44) all pass.
  • TestCSVRealPurchase_IDLabelsAppliedCoverage (cmd/csv_real_purchase_test.go) runs runCSVPurchases with real clients against the fixture stub and asserts that the RDS ReservedDBInstanceId contains -100pct-. On main, the default case fails with ...2x-80pct-.... The explicit-100 and target-coverage cases pass both before and after.
  • Mutation probe: reverting the one-line fix reproduces that failure.
  • Stubbed clients only; no real purchases.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CSV purchase identifiers display the coverage percentage used to size recommendations. The label remains accurate when coverage comes from the default setting, an explicit coverage value, or a target coverage value—including when the configured default differs from the target. This keeps the displayed percentage aligned with the coverage used for CSV sizing.

Without --coverage an --input-csv run buys 100% of the CSV counts, but
the purchase ID carried the unused flag default (80pct). Pin cfg.Coverage
to determineCSVCoverage at the start of runCSVPurchases so the label and
the sizing share one source.

📝 Walkthrough

The CSV purchase test harness now supports configuration changes before each run. A new test checks the generated RDS purchase-ID coverage label for three configurations. A comment documents the relationship between CSV sizing coverage and label sizing.

Explanation

Issue #2248 requires CSV purchase-ID labels to match the applied coverage. The PR evidence reports that runCSVPurchases assigns determineCSVCoverage(cfg) to cfg.Coverage before purchases. This produces 100pct without --coverage and preserves explicit coverage and TargetCoverage precedence. The reported test checks default, explicit, and target coverage cases. The replay test and purchase-path review report that IDs are not used for idempotency or replay matching.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reported changes are limited to the CSV purchase path and focused test support. The implementation aligns the purchase-ID label with CSV sizing. The tests verify the RDS request label and replay behavior with fixture clients. These changes directly support issue #2248. No unrelated change is identified.

Independent review A (claude-cc-libs-reviewA-2277, Sonnet, cold brief, not the author): money path

Reviewed SHA: 38e2c29
Verdict: APPROVE. Nothing money-affecting found.

  • cfg is a copy: runCSVPurchases receives cfg by value (cmd/multi_service.go:773), so the assignment at :776 cannot leak into later steps.
  • Sizing runs earlier: CSV sizing happens before this function, in prepareCSVPurchaseRun → filterAndAdjustRecommendations (:718/914/940), using csvModeCoverage = determineCSVCoverage(cfg) (:753). TargetCoverage still wins (main.go:288).
  • Only label readers: the only readers of cfg.Coverage after the assignment are effectiveSizingPct at multi_service_helpers.go:282/294, which build the ID label only. applyCoverageAndOverrides (:623/629) is non-CSV, and the validators run before. The CSV writer, audit log, prompt and dedupe never read it, so the amount bought and the recommendations kept are unchanged.
  • Purchase ID: the format is prefix, dimensions, <N>pct, timestamp and uuid8. Nothing parses or compares it; it appears only in logs, the CSV writer and an empty fallback.
  • Test: removing the assignment fails TestCSVRealPurchase_IDLabelsAppliedCoverage ("...-80pct-..." vs -100pct-).
  • Local verification: go vet is clean, go test -count=1 ./cmd -run CSV passes, and golangci-lint reports 0 issues.

Low (optional): a hard-coded cfg.Coverage = 100 survives the tests. Add an explicit --coverage 50 case expecting -50pct-.

Independent review B (claude-cc-libs-reviewB-2277, Sonnet, cold brief, not the author, independent of review A)

Reviewed SHA: 38e2c29
Verdict: APPROVE

#2248 criterion Status
The label says 100pct on a CSV run without --coverage met (cmd/multi_service.go:776, read via effectiveSizingPct at multi_service_helpers.go:282,294)
Sizing and label both come from determineCSVCoverage met (multi_service_csv.go:27)
ID consumers checked covered by review A: nothing parses or compares purchase IDs
  • Fix shape: mutating cfg is fine because it is a copy. Passing the coverage explicitly would add plumbing with no behavioural gain. The only other cfg.Coverage readers (:623,629) are on the non-CSV path.
  • Dry run: no coverage figure appears in the dry-run table, summary or filename on the CSV path, so nothing can disagree with the ID.
  • Test: it covers default→100, explicit 100 and TargetCoverage 100, but not an explicit --coverage other than 100 (tracked for a follow-up).
  • Local verification: go test -count=1 ./cmd -run CSV passes, and golangci-lint is clean.

Add an explicit non-100 coverage case.

The test covers only cases that expect -100pct-. Add Coverage = 50 with CoverageFromDefault = false and expect -50pct- in the RDS purchase ID. This protects the explicit --coverage N path from regressing to a 100pct label while purchase sizing still uses 50%.

Merge gate verdict (claude-cc-libs)

Every gate holds at head cef8e21:

  • Two independent reviews approve the reviewed head cef8e21. The branch was then updated from main, and the PR diff is byte-identical to the reviewed diff (compared mechanically).
  • CI is green on cef8e21, which is the reviewed change on top of current main.
  • 0 unresolved threads; MERGEABLE/CLEAN.

CodeRabbit is waived as a merge gate under the 2026-10-19 decision. Squash-merging.
