MERGE GATE: a live Recommender sample must confirm plan sits at the root op value. The payload shape is unverified (about 65% confidence); the code models the root value as a computepb.Commitment.

What

The GCP compute converter took the term only from params.Term (default 1yr) and ignored the root Commitment plan, so a 36-month recommendation could be bought as 12 months and the reverse.

  • rootCommitmentTerm reads the root plan and maps TWELVE_MONTH/THIRTY_SIX_MONTH to "1yr"/"3yr". A malformed plan (non-string, empty, unknown, UNDEFINED_PLAN) wraps errBadPlan.
  • resolveRecTerm: plan found and no Term uses the plan; plan and Term equal uses the canonical plan term; plan and Term differ skips; root with no plan and no Term skips; unrecognized Term keeps today's skip; a payload with no root op keeps the old params.Term / "1yr" fallback (tracked in gcp compute: non-root populateRecommendationResources path still guesses the term #304).
  • convertOrSkipBadAmount skips on errBadPlan too, logging the rec name and reason. The batch continues.

Tests

plan_test.go: the issue scenario (36mo plan, empty Term, Insert Plan must be THIRTY_SIX_MONTH), spelling equivalence, conflict/missing/malformed skips, a conflicting rec next to a good one, and the mapping probe. Pre-fix, the scenario, conflict, missing and malformed cases fail. The dedupe_test.go fixture now carries a plan.

Fixture-based evidence only; no live cloud call.

Follow-ups

Closes #291

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • GCP Compute Engine recommendations now use the commitment plan to determine whether a purchase term is one or three years. Conflicting, unsupported, or incomplete terms are skipped rather than assigned an incorrect default.
  • Documentation
    • Added a known issue noting that recommendations without a root commitment may still default to a one-year term.

📝 Walkthrough

Compute Engine recommendation conversion now derives terms from root Commitment plans, checks explicit terms against those plans, and skips recommendations with invalid or conflicting plan data.

Changes: GCP Compute Engine recommendation plan handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Plan parsing and term resolution
providers/gcp/services/computeengine/commitment_type.go, providers/gcp/services/computeengine/plan_test.go
Supported root plans map to canonical 1yr or 3yr terms. Explicit terms are canonicalized and checked against the plan. Fallback behavior depends on whether a root Commitment and parameter term are present.
Recommendation conversion and validation
providers/gcp/services/computeengine/client.go, providers/gcp/services/computeengine/plan_test.go, providers/gcp/services/computeengine/client_test.go, providers/gcp/services/computeengine/dedupe_test.go, providers/gcp/recommendations_sdk_test.go, known_issues/01_gcp_compute_nonroot_term.md
Conversion uses the resolved term and skips recommendations with bad-plan errors. Tests cover invalid plans, conflicts, skipped rows, and continued processing of valid recommendations. Fixtures include root plan data. The known-issue document records an open non-root payload concern.

Restore the experimental gate before merging so recommendations without a root plan retain the previous term fallback. Malformed root values no longer stop later recommendations in the batch.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #291 is closed and supplies historical context only. No active directly linked issue remains, so this pull request has no applicable linked-issue coding requirements. The reported implementation and tests address the historical plan-term mismatch, but the live payload check is not a coding requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the historical #291 scope. The implementation resolves the root plan, skips invalid recommendations, and preserves batch processing. The tests and fixture updates support this behavior. The known-issue document records the explicitly deferred non-root behavior and does not add unrelated implementation.

Coordination: gcp-compute work (PR #381, plus follow-ups for cost semantics and savings window) edits providers/gcp/services/computeengine/client.go in disjoint regions (pricing functions, enrichRecWithPricing, the cost block after enrichRecWithPricing in convertGCPRecommendation, extractCostImpactFromRecommendation). The term resolution in convertGCPRecommendation is left to this PR. No branch edits on our side.

Automated review of 689e6c9: changes needed before merge.
Logic and tests look sound, and skip handling is consistent. But the PR is CONFLICTING and must be rebased, and the author's own merge gate (live Recommender sample confirming plan at the root op value, ~65% confidence) is unmet. A wrong shape would make every root rec with no Term get skipped.

  • The branch has merge conflicts with main.
  • bug providers/gcp/services/computeengine/commitment_type.go:123: Payload shape is unverified. If the real Recommender root value has no plan key, every root rec with an empty params.Term now hits termWithoutPlan and is skipped with errBadPlan (line 188). Before this PR those recs were bought as 1yr. This is a silent regression of the listing path, and the PR body admits the shape is unverified. Confirm with a live or recorded sample before merging, or fall back to the old default when plan is absent.
  • bug providers/gcp/services/computeengine/client.go:1190: Merge state is CONFLICTING (the branch carries a merge commit from main). It needs a rebase and fresh CI at the final head before the review gate can name a SHA.
  • suggestion providers/gcp/services/computeengine/commitment_type.go:174: The if/else-if with an assignment in the condition is hard to read. Compute want first, then handle the unrecognized, conflict and match cases in separate statements.
  • suggestion providers/gcp/services/computeengine/plan_test.go:335: The tests do not cover an unrecognized params.Term (for example 5yr) combined with a plan. That is the branch at commitment_type.go:174.
  • still open: Live Recommender plan shape unverified
  • still open: Merge conflicts need rebase

Merge driver status: blocked on an owner decision. This PR is superseded by #401, which merged on 2026-10-13, landed the same change behind the experimental ExperimentalGCPPlanTerm gate and closed #291. The branch now conflicts with main. Owner action needed: close this PR, or say what here was not carried over to #401.

…e batch

rootPlanTerm returned a plain error for a non-object root Commitment Value, so convertOrSkipBadAmount did not recognize it as errBadPlan and GetRecommendations aborted before later valid recommendations were processed. Wrap it with errBadPlan to skip the row like any other malformed plan.

The regression test proves a malformed ACTIVE root value is skipped while a later valid recommendation in the same batch is still converted.
