Summary

Root cause. The Azure purchase dedupe (FindReservationOrderByIdempotencyToken) matched only on a cudly-idempotency-token tag written into the calculatePrice/purchase request body. The Reservations API does not define tags on either resource. In the cached SDK source (armreservations@v1.1.0/models.go), neither PurchaseRequest nor ReservationOrderResponse has a Tags field. If Azure drops the tag, a re-drive or retry finds nothing and buys the same 1y/3y reservation again.

Fix. The fix keys the dedupe on a field both models define: properties.displayName (PurchaseRequestProperties.DisplayName, ReservationOrderProperties.DisplayName).

  • When an idempotency token is present, ApplyPurchaseTags appends a deterministic marker to the display name: cudly followed by the first 16 hex characters of SHA-256(token). It drops whole trailing - segments to stay within Azure's 64-char limit. For BuildDisplayName output those segments are the random suffix and then the timestamp. The leading service, region, SKU, count and term segments are kept. A name with no separator left is hard-truncated.
  • matchReservationOrderInPage adopts an order when its tag or its display-name marker carries the token. The tag is still written and matched, so orders Azure did return tagged keep working.
  • All seven service clients go through ApplyPurchaseTags, so no service client changes. Calls without a token (CLI legacy path) produce the same bytes as before.
  • New code is in idempotencymarker.go, because purchase.go is already well over the 500-line guideline.

Closes #290

Verification (unit/fixture level)

Fail before the fix. The new test helpers were present and purchase.go was unchanged:

go test ./services/internal/reservations/ -run 'UntaggedOrderMatchedByDisplayName' -v (in providers/azure)
        	            	expected: "order-bought-earlier"
        	            	actual : "order-duplicate"
but actually it was. <- calculatePrice/purchase POST issued
--- FAIL: TestDoIdempotentPurchaseTwoStep_UntaggedOrderMatchedByDisplayName

Pass after the fix: all 4 new tests pass. They are TestDoIdempotentPurchaseTwoStep_UntaggedOrderMatchedByDisplayName, ..._DisplayNameOfOtherTokenDoesNotMatch, TestApplyPurchaseTags_DisplayNameMarker and TestApplyPurchaseTags_NoTokenLeavesDisplayNameAlone.

The regression test feeds a list response with no tags, only the display name from a first attempt. The re-drive builds its body with a different timestamp and random suffix. The test asserts that the earlier order is adopted and that no POST is made.

Commands run (macOS, Go 1.26.9 via toolchain auto-download):

  • make build: all 5 modules OK
  • make vet: all 5 modules OK
  • go test -race -short ./providers/azure/... (workspace) and cd providers/azure && GOWORK=off go test -race -short ./...: all packages ok
  • golangci-lint v2.10.1 (the version CI pins, built locally because the installed v2.1.6 was built with go1.24 and refuses Go 1.26), run in providers/azure with --config=.golangci.yml: 0 issues. A first run flagged an unchecked type assertion (errcheck), which is fixed.

Real-Azure gaps (not verified live):

  • No live calculatePrice, purchase or list call was made. Two things are unconfirmed: that Azure echoes the purchase displayName onto the reservation order's properties.displayName in the list response, and whether it drops the tags. Both models define displayName, which is the basis for this fix.
  • If a user renames the order or reservation in the portal and removes the marker, the dedupe cannot find it. The persisted-order-ID alternative in the issue would need storage outside this library.
  • The synapse and managedredis display names contain spaces. This PR keeps them as they are, apart from the appended marker. Whether Azure accepts spaces is a separate, pre-existing question.

Out of scope: #293 (shared-scope listing) touches different code (strict.go / inventory). This PR does not touch it.

A maintainer should mirror the closing issue's triage labels onto this PR, because the author lacks label permissions: triaged, urgency/this-sprint, priority/p1, severity/high, impact/few, effort/m, type/bug.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Reliability
    • Azure reservation orders can now be matched by an idempotency marker in their display name when purchase tags are unavailable, including when order timestamps or random name suffixes differ.
    • Display names remain unchanged when no idempotency token is provided. When a token is present, its marker is added within Azure’s display-name length limit.

The Reservations API defines no tags on a purchase request or a
reservation order (armreservations v1.1.0 PurchaseRequest and
ReservationOrderResponse have no Tags field), so the
cudly-idempotency-token tag the re-drive lookup keyed on may never be
stored or listed back, and a retry could buy the same 1y/3y reservation
again.

ApplyPurchaseTags now also writes a deterministic marker derived from
the idempotency token (cudly + 16 hex of SHA-256(token)) at the end of
properties.displayName, which both models define, dropping trailing
timestamp/random segments to stay within the 64-char limit.
FindReservationOrderByIdempotencyToken matches an order whose tag or
display-name marker carries the token. The tag is still written and
matched for orders Azure did return tagged.

📝 Walkthrough

Azure reservation purchase requests now add a token-derived marker to the display name. Order lookup decodes that name and accepts a matching marker or idempotency tag.

The previously identified display-name truncation issue is fixed. No actionable issue remains before normal merge checks, though Azure’s live display-name behavior has not been confirmed.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 832dd

The change improves duplicate-purchase protection without adding a public endpoint or changing Azure permissions. Remaining uncertainty concerns Azure preserving the display-name marker and the behavior of recovery or rollback when that marker is unavailable.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Lookup uses the tenant-wide reservation-order endpoint, with visibility determined by the caller's Azure bearer credential. A match can suppress purchase and be reported as a successful existing commitment; its immediate impact is therefore purchase attribution and financial execution within the credential-visible order set.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Adoption checks the tag or derived marker and provisioning state, but does not independently compare subscription, SKU, quantity, or billing scope. Caller-scoped token uniqueness was already the documented identity invariant. The fallback expands eligible orders to marker-bearing untagged orders without adding an authorization check or changing the credential boundary.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate Azure's request-to-list marker preservation and visibility during ambiguous purchase outcomes, and define reconciliation for marker loss and rollback. These are validation and recovery proposals, not observed provider failures.

Explanation

Issue #290 requires deduplication when Azure does not return the idempotency tag. The PR adds a deterministic SHA-256 display-name marker, applies it to token-bearing purchase requests, decodes properties.displayName, and matches orders by tag or marker. The regression tests cover an untagged existing order, a different token, length and UTF-8 truncation, and token-less compatibility. Live Azure behavior remains unverified, but that is a manual verification gap and not an unmet coding requirement.

Explanation

The production changes and tests support issue #290. They cover marker creation, request-body application, response decoding, and reservation-order matching. No unrelated implementation is shown. Shared-scope listing issue #293 is not changed.

Independent review verdict: CLEAN at fcbc85e699cc4723f8ffa859facdb44be7cce2cb (merge driver; reviewer did not write the code; base main 740dfbd72456)

  • SDK claim verified. armreservations v1.1.0 models.go has no Tags field on PurchaseRequest or ReservationOrderResponse, and it has PurchaseRequestProperties.DisplayName (models.go:666).
  • The same request body goes to both calculatePrice (purchase.go:383) and purchase (purchase.go:389), so the marker name is identical across both steps and across retries. The lookup runs only with a non-empty token (purchase.go:348, :667). Token-less paths are unchanged.
  • The marker match is name == marker || HasSuffix(name, "-"+marker). A different token does not match, and a test covers that. Generated names are always 64 characters or fewer, including names with no - and empty, nil or non-string names. Failed, canceled and expired orders are still skipped after a match, and BillingFailed still blocks.
  • Mutation probes: dropping the -1 from room (65-char names) was killed, and forcing the display-name match to false was killed by 4 tests. Two mutations survived and are non-blocking test gaps: no test pins the marker hex length, and no test pins the - boundary in the suffix match.
  • Local verification on macOS uses fixture/mock evidence only, with mocked Reservations API responses and no live Azure call. cd providers/azure && go test -race -short ./... passes, and go vet ./... is clean.
  • Non-blocking:
    1. Byte slicing at idempotencymarker.go:50-61 can split a multibyte rune on unsanitized names. Today's unsanitized callers are synapse and managedredis, and their names are ASCII.
    2. Spaced names longer than 42 characters can keep a trailing space before the marker. This is cosmetic.
    3. Not verifiable here: whether Azure persists the purchase-time displayName on the order. If it does not, nothing matches and the duplicate-purchase risk is the same as before this PR, with no new failure.

Remaining merge gates: CI has not run because the fork workflows await maintainer approval. The PR is a draft, labels still need to be mirrored from #290, and CR has not reviewed it yet because it is a draft.

A long display name with no '-' was hard-cut with name[:room], which can
split a multibyte rune and yield invalid UTF-8 (JSON-escaped past the
64-byte limit). Back the cut off to the rune start. Addresses CodeRabbit

New head 35c1c23, one commit on top of the reviewed fcbc85e. No rebase.

It addresses CodeRabbit's single actionable finding. When there's no - left to drop at, the display-name hard truncation used to split a multibyte UTF-8 rune. It now backs the cut off to the start of that rune and stays within the 64-byte limit.

  • Change: a 10-line helper, truncateToRuneBoundary, in idempotencymarker.go, plus two tests.
  • Fail-before: with name[:room] restored, TestWithIdempotencyMarker_TruncatesAtRuneBoundary fails (invalid UTF-8, unexpected value). It passes at 35c1c23.
  • Checks on macOS for providers/azure, with AWS config set to /dev/null: go build ./..., go vet ./... and go test ./... -count=1 all ok. golangci-lint v2.10.1 reports 0 issues. gocyclo -over 10 is silent and git secrets --scan is clean.

The fork CI run for the new head needs approval.

Independent delta review verdict: CLEAN at 35c1c231 (merge driver; same reviewer as the fcbc85e verdict; delta fcbc85e6..35c1c231)

  • truncateToRuneBoundary (idempotencymarker.go:67-78) keeps a name of maxBytes or fewer unchanged. Otherwise it backs off to a rune start, so the result never exceeds maxBytes and never splits a rune. An all-multibyte name ("€" at limit 2 → "") and room == 0 do not panic. The display name still carries the marker, and the new test asserts displayNameCarriesToken.
  • I checked the fail-before claim by putting name[:room] back in a scratch copy. TestWithIdempotencyMarker_TruncatesAtRuneBoundary then fails. The change was reverted.
  • Earlier notes: note 1 (rune split) is fixed. Notes 2 (trailing space), 3 (live persistence of the purchase-time displayName is unverified) and 4 (marker hex length and - boundary are not pinned) are unchanged and non-blocking.
  • Local verification on macOS, fixture/mock evidence only: cd providers/azure && go test -race -short ./... passes and go vet ./... passes.
  • CR skipped: quota (rate-limited at this head). The repo gate is covered by the independent review plus exact-revision local verification.

Remaining gate: CI has not run on this head. Fork runs 38886317318 and 38886317323 are action_required and await maintainer approval. Labels from #290 are mirrored.

@IAmJSD Every merge gate is now met at 35c1c231: independent delta review CLEAN, CI green (CI Success, pre-commit), local verification posted, labels mirrored, and no unresolved threads.

The only remaining blocker is that the default-branch ruleset requires the branch to be up to date with main (strict required checks). The branch is BEHIND. Could you update it, by rebasing on or merging origin/main? git merge-tree shows it merges with current main without conflicts. I will not push to your fork branch.

After the update I will re-verify the delta, request the fork CI approval, and merge with --match-head-commit.

Thanks @cristim. I merged origin/main into the branch at 832dde2 so it's up to date. I merged rather than rebased, so there was no force-push. The merge was automatic and the PR's own commits are unchanged since 35c1c23. Locally, with AWS config set to /dev/null, providers/azure builds and the services/internal/reservations and services/compute tests pass. The fork CI runs for the new head need approval.

Merge gate record at 832dde240b2c70ac45af76ee2d3304948d2d0950 (merge driver)

  • The new head is a merge of origin/main (89772cf) into the branch. git range-diff 740dfbd7..35c1c231 <mb>..832dde24 is empty for both commits (=). The PR's diff against main is byte-identical to the reviewed 35c1c231 diff, so the independent CLEAN verdict stands.
  • Local verification on macOS against the merged tree (fixture/mock evidence): cd providers/azure && go test -race -short ./... passes and go vet ./... is clean.
  • CI on this head is green: CI - Build & Test 38957720451 and pre-commit 38957720156.
  • Labels are mirrored from fix(azure): purchase dedupe relies on reservation order tags the api does not define #290, there are no unresolved threads, and mergeState is CLEAN. CR skipped: quota.

Merging (squash) with --match-head-commit 832dde24.
