… responses as unknown RDS, ElastiCache, MemoryDB and OpenSearch pick the reservation ID once per PurchaseCommitment call, so the SDK's in-call retry after a committed but lost response hit AlreadyExists and, with no idempotency token to recover by, reported a definite failure for a commitment that exists. With an empty token the purchase now makes one attempt, as EC2 does, and its error goes through purchasecfg.ClassifyPurchaseError: transport errors, 5xx and empty responses wrap ErrOutcomeUnknown, while 4xx and throttling stay definite. The token path is unchanged. Refs #299 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Summary
Part 1 of #299, for AWS reservation purchases without an idempotency token.
RDS, ElastiCache, MemoryDB and OpenSearch choose the reservation ID once per
PurchaseCommitmentcall. RDS usesopts.ReservationIDorBuildReservationName; the others useBuildReservationName. The client retries up topurchasecfg.MaxAttempts=2times. When attempt 1 committed and its response was lost, attempt 2 gotAlreadyExists. With an empty token, recoverAlreadyExistsrefuses to recover, so the call reported a definite failure for a commitment that exists. The fix removes that path instead of guessing ownership, following the EC2 precedent (
ec2/client.go:~172):RetryMaxAttempts = 1.purchasecfg.ClassifyPurchaseError. Transport errors, 5xx and an empty success response wrapcommon.ErrOutcomeUnknown. 4xx (includingAlreadyExists) and throttling stay definite, so callers can retry those safely.AlreadyExistsrecovery.providers/aws/internal/purchasecfg/tokenless.gokeep eachPurchaseCommitmentwithin the complexity hook (now 9-10).Deviation from the issue's wording. The issue proposed resolving an empty-token
AlreadyExiststo the existing reservation. Plan review showed that no ownership proof works without a token. Offering, count and start-time checks cannot reject a concurrent identical purchase whenBuildReservationNametruncates long SKUs, and they cannot reject a reused caller-supplied RDS ID. Recovering could record a purchase that did not happen. A lost response is now reported honestly as outcome-unknown.Trade-off: a transient 5xx or timeout that the SDK used to retry now returns outcome-unknown, so it needs reconciliation instead of silently succeeding on a second attempt. Throttling still fails definite. Redshift and EC2 made the same choice in #297.
The second part of #299, the exchange accept call in
pkg/exchange, follows as a separate PR.Verification (macOS, Go 1.26.9)
