fix(aws/redshift): dedupe reserved-node purchases with DescribeReservedNodes instead of tags - #515
Conversation
…edNodes instead of tags Reserved nodes cannot be tagged and the platform has no redshift:DescribeTags grant, so every tokenized purchase refused. Match an earlier purchase on owned state, offering ID, node count and a StartTime lower bound (RequestedAt minus 5 minutes, no upper bound). More than one match refuses; a lookup error or the pagination cap refuses; a token without RequestedAt refuses. Missing fields on a node count as a match (fail closed). Existing tag-guard tests are converted to the new lookup or removed with the path they covered. The new unit tests follow in the next commit. Table tests for found (owned states incl. pending-payment and exchanging, lower-bound edge, no upper bound, missing fields fail closed), not found (offering, count, window, retired, payment-failed), ambiguity, lookup error, pagination cap and marker handling, a cancelled context, the exact refusal for a token without RequestedAt, and the empty-token path doing no lookup. Refs #509 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
findNodeByIdempotencyToken, scanNodesForToken and nodeHasIdempotencyTag have no caller since the purchase guard moved to the DescribeReservedNodes matcher. Their cancelled-context test is covered by TestDedupe_CanceledContextRefusesBeforeScan. Refs #509 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
AWS does not support tags on reserved nodes, so the post-purchase CreateTags call can only fail and logged a misleading warning. Remove tagReservedNode, the lazy STS account lookup it needed, and the tests that exercised the tag set. The dedupe no longer reads tags, so nothing depends on them. Refs #509 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With the tag guard and post-purchase tagging gone, the Redshift API interface no longer needs CreateTags or DescribeTags, and the client no longer needs an STS client, SetSTSAPI or the cached account ID. The matching test mocks go with them. common.IdempotencyTagKey stays (EC2). Refs #509 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…tcome When PurchaseReservedNodeOffering fails with an unknown outcome (transport error, 5xx, timeout) or returns 200 without a node, look the node up with the same matcher on a context detached from the caller's cancellation and bounded to 30s. Exactly one match is adopted as an existing commitment. No match, an ambiguous match or a lookup error keeps the original error, so the caller still refuses a blind re-drive. A clean 4xx does no lookup. Refs #509 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Plan deviations (minor): an ambiguous or failing recovery lookup returns the original purchase error and logs the lookup error instead of joining the two. The match window has no upper bound so a late StartTime cannot cause a double buy. The cost is that a re-drive can adopt a later same-spec node or be refused as ambiguous, so document that the caller must not dispatch another purchase for the same account, region, offering ID and node count while a re-drive of an earlier lineage is possible. Closes #509
What
AWS does not allow tags on Redshift reserved nodes, and the platform has no
redshift:DescribeTagsgrant. The idempotency guard looked for its token tag throughDescribeTags, so every tokenized Redshift purchase was refused, and the post-purchaseCreateTagscall failed silently. This PR is part B of the reviewed plan; part A,PurchaseOptions.RequestedAt, merged as #514. It replaces the tag lookup with a client-sideDescribeReservedNodesmatch:ReservedNodeOfferingIdandNodeCount, and hasStartTime >= RequestedAt - 5m. The window has no upper bound.IdempotencyTokenwith a zeroRequestedAtis refused witherrRequestedAtRequired(unexported) rather than guessing.ErrOutcomeUnknownpurchase, a bounded 30s lookup on aWithoutCancelcontext adopts a matching node if one now exists.findNodeByIdempotencyToken, scanNodesForToken, nodeHasIdempotencyTag,tagReservedNode, the STS account lookup, theCreateTags/DescribeTagsinterface methods and exportedSTSAPI/SetSTSAPI. Nothing in cli, mcp or platform main references them.common.IdempotencyTagKeystays, because EC2 uses it.Consumer impact
Nothing changes in production until platform bumps its pin and does part C (platform#702). Platform still refuses Redshift through
awsPurchaseHasNoDuplicateGuard, and today every tokenized Redshift purchase is already refused atDescribeTags. Part C must persist and passRequestedAt, drop Redshift from that guard, and grantredshift:DescribeReservedNodes.Commits (each <= 400 additions+deletions)
dedupe.gomatcher, guard and adopt, plus the PurchaseCommitment switch (367)RequestedAt(6). This also pulls in pkg 4e7ef1e (review nits), 7d3105e (fix(common): treat a zero upfront on an upfront payment option as unknown #461, zero upfront treated as unknown) and 160f6d6 (test(httpclient): cover IPv4-mapped and DNS-resolved embedded forms; document caller-client bypass #473, httpclient test).Local verification (macOS)
