fix(frontend): send the provider account ID on RI exchange lists - #915
Conversation
The RI Exchange page forwarded the account chip value, a CloudAccount UUID, as account_id / subscription_id. The backend compares those to the provider account number (AWS) or looks up the subscription by external_id (Azure), so the AWS list was always empty and Azure was empty or 404 whenever a chip was selected. Resolve the selected UUID to its external_id via listAccountsMinimal before calling the loaders. An unknown UUID shows an error and makes no list call. A load superseded by a chip change during the lookup is dropped. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
When the selected account could not be resolved, the error was rendered but the previous scope's state stayed live: an in-flight utilization fetch could re-render the old account's table over the error, and the recommendations and history sections kept showing the old scope. Invalidate the utilization generation, reset the module state and put the other sections into an empty state on that path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Review comments at @frontend/src/riexchange.ts:
- Line 106: Update the account-resolution failure branch in loadRIExchange to
invalidate in-flight loads with the generation mechanism used by earlier
loaders. Add generation checks after each RI, recommendation, and history loader
await and before it updates state or the DOM, so stale requests cannot restore
prior-scope content after resolution fails.
- Line 75: In resolveScope, validate that account.external_id is a non-empty
string before returning it as accountID; reject the selected account when the
value is absent, non-string, or blank so resolution cannot succeed without an
account identifier.

Independent review of 3e388e6: changes requested
Findings
- ACTIONABLE (unresolved CR thread, I reproduced the reasoning): frontend/src/riexchange.ts:103-121 (error branch) vs loadConvertibleRIs/loadExchangeableAzureRIs/loadReshapeRecommendations/loadExchangeHistory (riexchange.ts ~287-312, 322-345). Only
utilizationGenerationis bumped on lookup failure. A prior successful loadRIExchange for account A may still have its list/recs/history requests in flight. Chip moves to account B, B's lookup fails, the error is rendered, then A's responses resolve and overwrite the instances pane, recommendations and history with account A's data under chip B. This is the cross-account display the PR says it prevents ("clears the previous scope's state"). Fix: capturescopeGenerationin loadRIExchange and have each loader skip its post-await state/DOM writes when it no longer matches (or pass the generation in). Add a test with a deferred listConvertibleRIs from the first load. - ACTIONABLE (unresolved CR thread): riexchange.ts:75.
external_idempty or absent resolves successfully; api/riexchange.ts:29 and :41 then omitaccount_id/subscription_id(accountID ? ... : ''), and the backend (handler_ri_exchange.go:1380-1383,accountID == ""returns true) treats it as unscoped. A selected chip can therefore silently list the whole fleet, which contradicts the PR's "never falls back to an unscoped list".AccountSummary.external_idis typed non-optional (api/accounts.ts:120) so this is likely rare, but the failure mode is the fail-quiet one issue #162 forbids. Fix: throw in resolveScope when!account.external_id, plus one test. - NIT: with provider=gcp and exactly one chip, the lookup runs before the GCP branch (riexchange.ts:99-129), so a failed lookup shows the "Select a valid account" error instead of the GCP "not available" state. NIT: the empty-state text says "Select a valid account" for network failures too (already noted in the PR body).
What I attacked
- Callers: grep of frontend/src for account_id/subscription_id/getCurrentAccountIDs: only riexchange.ts feeds the RI endpoints from the chip. api/riexchange.ts:28-42 are the only list senders. quote/execute (api/riexchange.ts:82-95) take body requests and never read the chip, so no UUID leaks there. The other six chip consumers correctly keep UUIDs (account_ids).
- Backend contract: handler_ri_exchange.go:1380 (checkListRIsAccountIDParam compares to the running 12-digit AWS account), :218/:813/:1041 (GetCloudAccountByExternalID("azure", subscriptionID)). external_id is the right value for both.
- Chip states: none or multi-select sends no param (as before, intended); missing account throws and no list call is made (tested); GCP renders the empty states with no list call; empty external_id is finding 2.
- Tests: riexchange.test.ts asserts exact args (toHaveBeenCalledWith('123456789012'), the Azure GUID, undefined for no chip, called once with the second account on a superseded load). Jest at the SHA: 62/62 pass. tsc --noEmit clean. eslint on both touched files clean.
- Fail-before: main's riexchange.ts against the PR tests: 8 failed (and one unhandled rejection crashes the run unless --unhandled-rejections=warn). Pass-after: 62/62.
- Mutation probe:
account.external_id->account.idfails 5 tests. - Deletion probe not run; scopeGeneration is needed for the race tests.
Gate status
- Independent review: this comment (the PR body's earlier review is a claim; I did not rely on it).
- Findings resolved: no, 2 open CR threads (findings 1 and 2).
- CI on SHA: pending at review time (all checks pending, CodeRabbit in progress).
- Local verification evidence on the PR: present in the body (jest, tsc, lint, mocked Playwright); I did not re-run Playwright. No real-account verification, as the body says.
- Labels: mirror issue #162 (priority/p2, severity/medium, urgency/this-sprint, triaged, impact/all-users, effort/s, type/bug).
- Size: +126/-11, under the cap.

…ccount ID Loaders started by an earlier loadRIExchange could finish after a later load and re-render the old scope over a resolve error or newer data. Pass the load generation into each loader and return after every await when it is stale. resolveScope now throws when the matched account has no external_id, since the API helpers would otherwise drop the param and send the request unscoped. Addressed both CodeRabbit findings in 6eddcbf (replies on the threads). Independent re-review of the delta at 6eddcbf found no blocking issues. Probes: removing either per-loader stale guard, or the empty-external_id throw, each fails a test. Jest 3311 passed and 0 failed, tsc clean, Playwright 3/3. @coderabbitai review |

Independent delta review of 6eddcbf (previous: 3e388e6): no actionable findings
OLD_SHA is an ancestor of NEW_SHA. Delta touches only frontend/src/riexchange.ts and its test file.
Previous findings
| # | Finding | Status | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | In-flight list/recs/history loads could repaint after a lookup failure | RESOLVED | riexchange.ts:305,312 (RIs), 343,346 (Azure), 532,537 (recs), 2307,2310 (history): each loader takes the generation from loadRIExchange (line 101) and returns after the await on both success and catch paths. Test "in-flight loaders from a superseded load cannot overwrite a later resolve error" |
| 2 | Empty external_id sent no param and the backend treated it as unscoped | RESOLVED | riexchange.ts:75 throws on a missing or empty external_id, which routes to the existing resolve-error path (no list call, error shown). Test "fails loudly when the selected account has no external_id" |
Proof (jest): at NEW_SHA npx jest src/__tests__/riexchange.test.ts gives 64/64 pass. With OLD_SHA's riexchange.ts swapped in (new test file kept) it gives 2 failed, 62 passed. The delta adds exactly these 2 tests, so each finding is covered by one test that fails before and passes after. The swap was reverted. tsc --noEmit exits 0 and eslint on both changed files is clean.
New findings: none. Attacked: stale success and catch paths in all four loaders; default parameter generation = scopeGeneration on the exported loadReshapeRecommendations (only affects direct callers, which get the current generation, so no behavior change); utilizationGeneration still guards the async utilization paint; empty-state and error rendering after a failed resolve; the GCP early return.
Threads: both CodeRabbit threads (riexchange.ts:76 and :107) are resolved, with the author's reply naming 6eddcbf and CR acknowledging. CR's incremental review at this SHA was rate limited (no new CR findings exist).
Base and conflicts: origin/main moved past the merge-base; git merge-tree shows no conflict. Full diff vs main is 2 files, +186/-21.
Gate status
- Independent review: this comment, at 6eddcbf.
- Findings resolved: yes (table above, threads resolved).
- CI on SHA: Frontend build, Frontend E2E and pre-commit completed success; "CI - Build & Test" (38833343491) was still queued when checked, so not yet green. No action_required runs. mergeStateStatus was BLOCKED, consistent with that pending check.
- Local verification: jest, tsc and eslint run locally at this SHA with fail-before/pass-after as above (mocked API, no real-account run). The author's PR evidence for the real-path scenario was not re-verified here.
- Verdict recorded on the PR: yes, this comment.

CodeRabbit re-review of 6eddcbf skipped: rate limited twice. Its two findings on 3e388e6 are fixed and replied to on the threads. The review gate is covered by three independent review passes (the latest on the 6eddcbf delta), green CI on 6eddcbf, and the local verification in the PR body. [claude-cc-impl] |

Summary
Closes #162.
The RI Exchange page sent the top-bar account chip's value as
account_id(AWS) orsubscription_id(Azure). That value is a CloudAccount UUID. The handlers expect the provider's own ID,CloudAccount.external_id:checkListRIsAccountIDParamcompares it to the 12-digit AWS account number, and the Azure path callsGetCloudAccountByExternalID("azure", …). With a chip selected, the AWS list was always empty, and the Azure list was empty or returned 404 for scoped users.Other pages match
account_idsoncloud_account_id, so the chip value stays a UUID. This page now translates it:resolveScopelooks up the single selected UUID withapi.listAccountsMinimal()and sends that account'sexternal_id.
