The list endpoint returned the whole filtered recommendations cache in a single body, so a tenant with a few thousand cached rows pushed the response past the 6 MB Lambda payload cap and the page failed with 502. Gzip (LeanerCloud#775) raised that ceiling but did not bound it. Callers can now send limit (1-1000) and the returned next_cursor to read the list in pages ordered by recommendation ID. The cursor is an opaque base64url encoding of the last ID seen, so a row deleted between requests does not shift later pages. summary and regions still describe the full filtered set on every page, and compute capacity is only decoded for the returned rows. Requests without limit or cursor keep the existing unpaginated response, so the current frontend is unaffected until it adopts the parameters. openapi.yaml documents the parameters and the actual response shape. Reviewer: fresh Claude agent (Sonnet, high effort), not the author, cold brief. The PR body was treated as a claim. Coordinator: claude-cc-reviewer.
Blocking findings: none.
Non-blocking notes:
- The id is not the table's primary key. The comment at
internal/api/handler_recommendations_page.go:93-96(and the PR body) says the id is "the cache table's primary key". The table's PK is a UUID column (migrations/000030_recommendations_cache.up.sql:7).rec.IDis the composite string built byrecommendationIDin the scheduler (provider|account|service|region|resource_type|engine|term|payment[...]). It is unique in practice, and Go string order is total, so keyset paging still holds. Only the comment and claim need correcting. - Empty id: a legacy row with an empty
id(:99-111) would encode to an empty cursor.next_cursorwould then be omitted and the client would stop early. Only malformed legacy rows can hit this. - Null vs empty list: paging past the end with a nil slice returns
"recommendations": null, as the legacy empty case already does, rather than[]. This is cosmetic. - Memory: the full filtered set is still loaded server-side, since there is no SQL
LIMIT. That is acceptable, because #723's failure is the response size, and each page plus the fixed-sizesummary/regionsstays far below 6 MB.
What was attacked and how (local macOS, unit tests):
- Unpaginated path unchanged: with neither param,
summarizeRecommendations(recs, recs)keeps the same rows, row order and field order, andnext_cursorisomitempty.stampComputeCapacitysets onlyVCPU/MemoryGB, which no summary or filter reads, and still runs on every row in that mode. - Scope safety: paging is applied after
ListRecommendations,filterRecommendationsByEnabledProvidersandfilterRecommendationsByScope(handler_recommendations.go:~129-146). The cursor is only a position inside the already-scoped set, so it cannot reach out-of-scope or other-tenant rows.summaryandregionscover the full scoped set. - Input bounds:
- The cursor is capped at 1024 chars and decoded with
RawURLEncoding. A decode error or an empty result gives 400. limitgetsAtoierrors, < 1 and > 1000 rejected with 400.- No panic path was found.
- The cursor is capped at 1024 chars and decoded with

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Apply the page boundary before loading every row.
Each cursor request reaches this call with the full filtered result from ListRecommendations. paginateRecommendations then sorts that full result to return at most one page. Walking the 8,000-row fixture in 1,000-row pages therefore loads and sorts 8,000 rows eight times. Larger tenants retain unbounded per-request memory use. Push the ID boundary and row limit into the store read; obtain full-set totals through a separate aggregate query.

Triage (claude-cc-reviewer): valid, but out of scope for #723, whose failure is the response size, and this PR bounds that. Pushing the keyset and limit into the store read, with separate aggregate totals, is a larger change. I'll open a follow-up issue for it, so this thread can be resolved with a link to it.

@cristim Agreed. Store-side pagination and separate aggregate queries can remain a follow-up in #981 rather than expand this PR.
The performance concern is deferred, not fixed, so it need not block this PR but remains open here.

@cristim Thanks for filing #981. Store-level pagination and separate aggregate totals can proceed in that follow-up, outside this PR’s response-size scope.

Deferred to #981 per the maintainer's triage. Store-side keyset and limit, plus aggregate totals, are not implemented in this PR.

…ty paging params A page was bounded only by row count, but the opaque Details blob makes a row's size data-dependent, so 1000 large rows could still pass the 6 MiB Lambda response cap. Pages now also stop once the rows, measured as they appear inside the Lambda response envelope (the body re-encoded as a JSON string, so quotes and backslashes count twice), plus the summary, regions, keys and next_cursor would pass a 4 MiB budget. The budget is checked against uncompressed bytes because the LeanerCloud#775 gzip only runs when the client accepts it. A page always holds at least one row, so a row that alone is over the budget is returned on its own page with a logged warning instead of stalling the cursor walk. Legacy unpaginated mode is now selected only when neither limit nor cursor is present. A present but empty ?limit= or ?cursor= returns 400 instead of falling back to the unbounded response. Summary
GET /api/recommendationsreturned the whole filtered recommendations cache in one body. The store read has noORDER BY/LIMIT/cursor, and the handler sent every row back, so once a tenant has a few thousand cached rows the response goes over the 6 MB Lambda synchronous payload cap and the page fails with 502.What was already fixed: #775 (merged, said "Refs #723") gzips large JSON responses on Lambda. That raises the ceiling several-fold, but the response still grows with the tenant. The maintainer's comment on #723 says the issue stays open until bounded pagination lands (tracked as #777). This PR adds the backend half of that bound.
Fix (backend only, backward compatible)
GET /api/recommendations:limit: integer 1-1000, the maximum rows per page. Out-of-range, non-numeric or fractional values return 400 (they are not clamped).cursor: the opaquenext_cursorfrom the previous page (base64url of the last row ID, at most 1024 chars). Malformed or oversized cursors return 400. Sending a cursor with nolimituses a default page size of 500.?limit=or?cursor=(including whitespace only) returns 400 rather than falling back to the unbounded response.Detailsmakes row size data-dependent. Rows are added until the page would pass 4 MiB (4,194,304 B):idorder (the cache table's primary key, so the order is total), one page at a time, and the response includesnext_cursoruntil the last page. Paging is keyset-based: a row deleted between requests does not shift or repeat later pages, and a cursor past the end gives an empty page.summary(total_count, totals, avg payback) andregionsare still computed over the full filtered set on every page, so headline numbers do not shrink to the page size.next_cursorkey). The current frontend sorts, groups and totals the full set client-side (see feat(recommendations): bound GET /api/recommendations with pagination and slimmer rows #777), so it keeps working unchanged.stampComputeCapacity, aDetailsJSON decode) now runs only for the rows actually returned.openapi.yaml: documentslimit/cursor/next_cursorand corrects theRecommendationsResponseschema. The maintainer is working on the UI right now, and paging the recommendations page properly needs server-side grouping/sorting/totals plus a change to
samePurchaseVariantIdentity, which readsdetailsfrom list rows (all scoped in #777). So I kept this PR to the backend contract and leftfrontend/alone.Important for whoever triages the close: until the frontend sends
limit, the dashboard still calls the unpaginated path, so a very large tenant can still hit the cap (now behind gzip). If you would rather keep #723 open until the frontend adopts pagination, swapClosesforRefsbelow.Frontend follow-up (for #777): request
?limit=1000and follownext_cursoruntil it is absent, concatenating the rows. That keeps the existing client-side grouping and sorting working unchanged with no server-side summary work. Or move to true per-page rendering once server-side sorting/grouping exists. Usesummaryfrom any page for the totals.Closes #723

All evidence below is unit tests with mock schedulers and synthetic fixtures. Nothing ran against a real Lambda, real Postgres or a real cloud account. Tests were run with
AWS_CONFIG_FILE=/dev/null AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE=/dev/nullbecause the local~/.aws/configon the dev machine is broken.Fail-before. I removed the fix from the tree, then ran a minimal regression probe on current main: 8,000 synthetic rows of about 1 KB each, requested with

TestGetRecommendations_PaginationBoundsResponseuses the same 8,000-row fixture. The fixture's unpaginated JSON is checked to be over 6 MB. The test walks the cursor withlimit=1000and asserts that every page's marshaled body is under 6 MB, that every row is returned exactly once in strictly increasing ID order, and thatsummary/regionsreflect the full set on every page. The other new tests:TestGetRecommendations_UnpaginatedShapeUnchanged: the legacy path returns every row in scheduler order with nonext_cursorkey in the JSON.TestGetRecommendations_PaginationPages: first page, last page, an exact-fit page with no cursor, a cursor naming a deleted row, and a cursor past the end.TestGetRecommendations_CursorWithoutLimitUsesDefaultPageSizeTestGetRecommendations_PaginationRejectsBadParams: 400 for each bad input, checked before any store read.TestGetRecommendations_PaginationMaxLimitAcceptedTestGetRecommendations_PageCutByByteBudget: 1500 rows with quote-heavyDetails, about 10 KB each in the envelope and over 12 MiB in total. Walked withlimit=1000: pages are cut by bytes at 416 rows, the largest page body in the envelope is 4,186,443 B, and the largest full Lambda payload is 4,186,556 B. Every row comes back exactly once, in order, with unchanged totals on every page.TestBuildBudgetedPage_OversizedRowAlone: the oversized row is alone on its page, the walk continues, and the small rows around it still share pages.TestBuildBudgetedPage_TightBudgetSweep: steps the budget from 1500 B to 7000 B one byte at a time. Every multi-row page fits, and every page is maximal to within the paginator's 2-byte conservative overcount.limit/cursorcases added toTestGetRecommendations_PaginationRejectsBadParams.Mutation probes. Real-environment gaps: I took no production row-size measurements and did not test against a deployed Lambda, since neither is accessible. The byte budget is enforced from the serialized size, so it does not rely on an estimate. It was exercised only with synthetic fixtures.
