#120.

Defect fixed

  • Quick start: uv run --extra torch python -m api run server in READMEs, guide (getting-started, server, clients), SPEC, PROJECT; a CI job quickstart starts the server exactly so and checks /api/version.
  • Logging instead of prints (gemstone.*, GEMSTONE_LOG_LEVEL, prompts/answers only at DEBUG).
  • Sessions expire after GEMSTONE_SESSION_TTL (default 24h) with their tool cache.
  • Lifespan hook unloads engines on shutdown.
  • web_search.py duplicates removed; requests declared.

Test added: api/tests/test_ops_quickstart.py (18; red: 14 failed, 4 errors).

Not done: a shutdown test with an open stream (unload waits for active leases); remaining prints in registry.py and utils/__init__.py.

Rebased onto #131 (workflow conflict: kept the real_model marker run and added the quickstart job).

Closes #120

b-re-w added 2 commits October 3, 2026 15:06
The documented 'python -m api run server' ran the system Python after
uv sync; the READMEs and the guide now say 'uv run --extra torch python
-m api run server', and a CI job starts the server exactly that way and
checks /api/version.

Prompts, answers and the system prompt were printed to stdout; logging
goes through gemstone.* loggers at GEMSTONE_LOG_LEVEL (INFO by default,
prompts and answers only at DEBUG). Sessions expire after
GEMSTONE_SESSION_TTL (default 24h) with their tool cache. A lifespan
hook unloads the engines on shutdown. web_search no longer duplicates
its dotenv and fallback blocks, and requests is a declared dependency.
