What problem does this solve?
Moonfin clients already provide a local “Per Row Image Type Selection” setting. However, this configuration currently has to be set manually on each client.
Moonbase only exposes a global home-row image type override. This is not sufficient because different rows require different image types.
For example:
Genres should use Thumb because this correctly displays the custom genre artwork.
Continue Watching and Recently Added should continue using Poster.
Using the global Thumb override fixes the Genres row, but also changes every other home-screen row.
The goal is to configure these per-row image types once in Moonbase as server-wide defaults and distribute them to all users and Moonfin clients.
Proposed solution
Add the existing per-row image type configuration to the Moonbase administration interface.
For every configured home-screen row, Moonbase should provide these options:
Inherit global setting
Poster
Thumb
Banner
Example server-wide configuration:
Genres: Thumb
Continue Watching: Poster
Recently Added: Poster
Other rows: Inherit global setting
Administrators should be able to save this as the server-wide default and apply or push it to users through the existing Moonbase configuration distribution.
If possible, the setting should also be available in Moonbase’s Desktop, Mobile and TV profiles. The important part is that users should not need to repeat the same configuration manually on every device.
Area
Admin defaults / config page
Client impact
The per-row image type selection already exists in Moonfin Core, so this request is primarily for Moonbase’s admin defaults and configuration distribution.
Ideally, Moonbase should store and push the existing per-row values to all users and clients. Matching client work should only be necessary if these values are not currently included in the settings-sync mechanism or if clients do not yet apply them from a Moonbase-managed default.
The existing client-side setting has been confirmed on desktop and iPhone. Apple TV may provide the same setting, but this has not yet been tested.
Alternatives considered
The per-row image type can already be configured locally in each Moonfin client. However, this requires repeating the configuration for every user and device.
Moonbase’s global image type override can also be set to Thumb. This makes the custom genre artwork appear, but undesirably changes the image type of every other home-screen row.
Neither alternative provides a centrally managed server-wide default.
Additional context
his request is specifically about exposing and distributing the existing client-side “Per Row Image Type Selection” through Moonbase. It is not a request to add the per-row selection to the Moonfin clients, since that functionality already exists there.
The custom genre artwork was uploaded in Jellyfin as Primary, Thumb and Banner. All three Jellyfin image endpoints return the same custom PNG with identical SHA-256 checksums.
Despite that:
Genres set to Thumb display the custom genre artwork.
Genres set to Poster display generated or media-derived artwork.
A Moonbase-managed per-row default would allow Genres to use Thumb while all other rows retain their appropriate image type.
