Gate metadata-path recording on collection presence.
read_all_samples can append samples and return false. The metadata template still passes the previous verification state as record, so SchemaTracker::update writes those samples to MCAP before set_data_present(false) clears publication. Live consumers discard the samples, but replay can read the extra records. Preserve existing non-metadata callers and enable the presence gate only for this metadata path.

could this and other metadata-specific templates be folded into the existing templates like live.cpp.template, by adding some #if metadata blocks?

this seems unrelated to metadata? also a compat path for a key nobody sets, can just drop it. If kept, avoid "no longer" wording, describe the current state

None -> "" round trip, the manifest already uses "" for unset. Lets pick one representation of "no metadata"

metadata_schema / metadata_channel still carry derived values like "x_metadata" when metadata is unset. Could the three be one optional struct so they only exist together?

nothing makes sure the metadata table has a caster registered in _schema, so a tracker that sets metadata without hand written bindings compiles and then throws "unregistered type" on the first get_metadata() from python. Could the manifest check reject it, or codegen emit the binding?

this writes a HeadPoseRecord that has a timestamp, so the table-without-timestamp path the new write overload exists for is not exercised

Are we supposed to receive the metadata only once? What is a "candidate" candidate here?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
This part seems to be against the design. The design is the metadata will be sent sparsely, like once every 30 seconds. When the tracker receives a new metadata that differs from the archived one, it's considered a breakage and it will become invalid, stops recording or piping data

should be a once in a life time push, probably don't need a clas for this. Also I don't see where the class is being instantiated

can this be computed from the metadata payload?
Codegen: - Fold the metadata live/replay impls and replay factory into the existing pull templates as #if @HAS_METADATA@ blocks. - Make `metadata` an optional manifest key with one representation of "unset": templates.py derives its .fbs stem and MCAP channel into an optional MetadataGenContext, so defaults.toml and the placeholder transforms are unchanged. - Drop the record_type rejection, which is unrelated to metadata. Live: - SchemaMetadataReader holds its SchemaTrackerBase as a member and answers in one call whether the data may be published and recorded this tick. The live impl decides that before reading the data and passes it as SchemaTracker::update's `record`, so MCAP holds exactly what is published. - A sample that is not a valid table throws; a sample that differs from the adopted one withholds the data for the rest of the session. Both name the collection. - Confirmation follows the metadata collection, not the data collection. Wire contract: - A producer sizes its metadata collection to its table, so the constant becomes TRACKER_METADATA_MAX_SIZE and samples compare without their zero padding. The identifier check lives in the reader only. - Remove SchemaMetadataPusher, which nothing instantiated. Replay: the factory reads the metadata and passes it to the impl. Tests: replace the template-text assertions with tests/cpp/core/ tracker_metadata, which generates a tracker with metadata, compiles it, and covers recording the timestamp-less metadata table and replaying it. Review findings beyond the PR comments: - Nothing ran the live gating. tracker_metadata_tests now drives the generated live impl through a fake tensor runtime (timespec platforms): data waits for the producer's metadata and is recorded only when published; metadata that arrives before the data collection lets the first sample through; a restarted producer's data waits for its own metadata, however it is padded; a different sample withholds the data for the session, also when the adopted one follows it in the same tick; an invalid sample throws with the collection name. The live recording replays the same values. - The Python helpers had no test. - Nothing documented the manifest key, the producer contract, or that the metadata table needs its own schema file and Python binding: generated_trackers.rst gains "Trackers with metadata", linked from add_device.rst. Signed-off-by: Lotus Li <lotusl@nvidia.com> Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- get_metadata() returns the first metadata received, which is not the first one sent when the tracker starts after the producer; say so in the facade and pybind docs. - The producer contract asks for the same encoded table, since the reader compares bytes. - McapTrackerViewers documents the metadata table as a root it reads. - deviceio_trackers/AGENTS.md: `metadata`, like `header`, is an optional key without a default. - SchemaMetadataReader: document collection_id; drop a write to m_confirmed that nothing reads once the metadata mismatches. - tracker_metadata_tests: define the helpers only the timespec tests use inside their guard, so other platforms compile no unused functions; take the metadata topic from the generated traits; initialize every field of the fake runtime's collections.
