PastureStack Kubectl Service

Linux runtime v0.9.21 integrates shared Ubuntu 26.04 security backports for already-installed packages while preserving the selected coreutils provider.

The shared bundle includes the official Brotli decoder fix for CVE-2026-111497.

The image retains bundle manifests, source inputs and installation receipts under /usr/share/pasturestack/security/ubuntu-backports/.

Kubectl Service handles catalog install, upgrade, rollback, remove, list, and interactive kubectl operations. The maintained runtime uses Kubernetes v1.36.4 and Helm v4.2.4 only.

PastureStack is an independent community project and is not affiliated with Rancher Labs or SUSE. The repository preserves the history and Apache-2.0 license of the upstream rancher/kubectld project.

Select ghcr.io/pasturestack/kubectl-service:v0.9.21 through the reviewed Catalog package. OCI labels, SBOM and release attestations bind the published bytes.

Runtime contract

  • Helm operations always use Helm v4.2.4, rebuilt from its pinned upstream source with Go 1.27.3 and patched ORAS v2.6.2.
  • Kubernetes operations use kubectl v1.36.4, rebuilt from the pinned official source archive with Go 1.27.3.
  • Catalog event names and reply shapes remain unchanged.
  • The former backend selector has been removed. No runtime fallback or automatic conversion exists.
  • Existing release data must already be readable by Helm 4 before this service is introduced. An old release store is not modified or deleted by this image.

The image runs as UID/GID 65534:65534, needs no Linux capability or privileged mode, and creates a private trust bundle and per-session shell home.

Build and test

The service uses Go 1.27 Modules and a checked-in vendor tree. The preserved Rancher v1 event/client compatibility packages are isolated under third_party/; maintained dependencies such as urfave/cli, Logrus, Gorilla WebSocket, and x/sys are pinned by go.mod and go.sum.

make test
make validate
make package IMAGE_NAME=local/pasturestack/kubectl-service TAG=v0.9.21

Packaging verifies both source archives and licenses, the upstream Git commits, the patched Helm module graph, compiler version, digest-pinned base images, a non-root read-only smoke run, a client-side Helm render, full-severity Trivy reports, and a CycloneDX SBOM. Release gates reject all available fixes, unreviewed findings, and High/Critical findings. Only exact Low/Medium entries with official no-fix evidence may remain. The existing Go OpenVEX statement covers the absent OpenPGP package; source dependency graphs enforce that boundary with fail-closed checks. Raw scans must include package inventories for the service executable, Helm, kubectl, and each bundled Go build tool.

See COMPATIBILITY.md, SECURITY.md, and ORIGIN.md.

Security inputs

Maintained Go builds select the patched Go 1.27.3 compiler without raising the existing Go language requirement. Ubuntu build/runtime stages apply the checksum-pinned ca-certificates 20260816ubuntu0.26.04.1 security package after their frozen APT baseline; the final trust store and installed version are verified. Release artifacts must pass the repository's existing checks before publication.

Helm and kubectl retain their upstream versions and source checksums; their source builds select golang.org/x/net v0.60.0, and the packaged binaries' build metadata verifies that selection. The private per-user CA bundle is copied only after the system CA security update.
