Fixes #9133

Problem and cause

Importing MONAI eagerly loaded the nvImageCodec plugin, producing warnings about missing optional libraries. Excluding the plugin from eager loading fixed warnings during import monai, but creating LoadImage() still triggered them because its default readers initialized the plugin.

Solution

  • Excluded nvimgcodec_pydicom_plugin from eager submodule loading.
  • Moved plugin setup to first use through verify_suffix() or read().
  • Check whether a file is DICOM before initializing the optional plugin.
  • Changed the message about unavailable nvImageCodec to debug level.

Both changes are needed: the exclusion prevents warnings during import monai, while lazy setup prevents them during LoadImage() initialization.

Reproduction environment

Python 3.12, WSL2, CPU PyTorch, and nvidia-nvimgcodec-cu13 installed without the nvTIFF and nvJPEG2000 wheels.

Testing

  • pytest tests/data/test_init_reader.py tests/data/test_nvimgcodec_pydicom_reader.py -q — 28 passed, 4 skipped, 7 subtests passed.
  • ./runtests.sh --ruff — passed.
  • Full integration and quick-test suites have not been run.

Types of changes

  • Breaking change.
  • New tests added to cover the changes.
  • Integration tests passed locally.
  • Quick tests passed locally.
  • In-line docstrings updated.

📝 Walkthrough

MONAI excludes nvimgcodec_pydicom_plugin from eager submodule loading. NvImgCodecPydicomReader initializes plugin setup on its first suffix verification or read. Tests check that importing MONAI or constructing LoadImage does not load nvidia.nvimgcodec, and that reader construction does not register the plugin.

Explanation

Issue [#9133] requires no nvImageCodec warnings during import monai and deferred setup until accelerated DICOM use. monai/__init__.py excludes nvimgcodec_pydicom_plugin from both eager loads. NvImgCodecPydicomReader now initializes setup on suffix verification or read. The subprocess tests cover import monai and LoadImage() without importing nvidia.nvimgcodec or writing stderr.

Check stderr for import-time diagnostics.

capture_output=True collects stderr, but the test uses it only as a failure message. An import can emit nvTIFF or nvJPEG2000 warnings, exit successfully, and still print False. The test then passes. Assert that stderr is empty.

I replaced optional_import("nvidia.nvimgcodec") with PathFinder.find_spec() to check whether the package is available without importing it.

The previous check could trigger the native-library warnings we are trying to prevent. It could also skip the test if importing the package failed because of a native-library issue, potentially hiding the problem. The updated check only inspects package availability, and the subprocess test verifies that importing MONAI does not load nvidia.nvimgcodec.

I also added an assertion that stderr is empty to ensure the subprocess produces no warnings or error output.

Hi @vikasreddy11 I'm not sure adding the exclusion in the module loading actually does anything for the problem, I still see the output being printed when LoadImage is instantiated. I think it's reasonable to only see the output when trying to read Dicom files for the first time, so moving calls to register_as_decoder_plugin to be lazy may be the way to do that if it works.

For example:

$ PYTHONPATH=. python -c 'from monai.transforms import LoadImage; LoadImage()'
nvImageCodec is not available; skipping pydicom decoder plugin registration.
NvImgCodecPydicomReader: nvImageCodec decoder plugin did not register successfully. Falling back to default pydicom decoders.

Also, the warning about skipping registration here should be debug instead of warning to make everything quieter.

Document the deferred read contract.

The new read docstring omits data, kwargs, and the return value. The class docstring at Line 1089 also says registration occurs on initialization. Update both descriptions to state when setup occurs. As per path instructions, docstrings must “describe each variable, return value, and raised exception in the appropriate section of the Google-style of docstrings.”

Run the subprocess checks without the nvImageCodec skip.

The absent-package case is needed for the warning assertion. If setup moves into LoadImage() construction, register_as_decoder_plugin() returns False and _ensure_setup() emits a warning when nvidia.nvimgcodec is absent. Both tests currently skip before this subprocess runs.

Remove the availability checks. The related mocked tests do not exercise this subprocess path or assert empty stderr.

I reproduced the LoadImage() warnings. The exclusion alone was insufficient because its default readers initialized the nvImageCodec plugin. I moved plugin setup to first use and changed the unavailable-plugin message to debug. The exclusion remains necessary to prevent warnings during import monai. Focused tests pass.

Should the “did not register successfully” warning also be quieter when nvImageCodec is unavailable?

I see the changes, they look better but coderabbit had a relevant comment to look at. So long as the "did not register" warning occurs once we're good. I'm going to also run tests locally as you have with GPU to check behaviour and get back to you.
