Replay: per-case repeats in the plan, the attempt table, and the report - #23
Conversation
One draw per (case, variant) left a non-deterministic decoder's run-to-run variance invisible: the paired bootstrap resamples cases, so that term was silently attributed to the variant. `--repeats N` on batch-replay runs every scored pair N times. Each repeat is its own evaluation_experiments row and retry chain: schema v41 adds `repeat_index` (default 1, so every existing row reads as repeat 1), attempt_number stays unique per (run, case) across repeats, and the lifecycle trigger treats repeat_index as identity. Migration 41 is an ADD COLUMN plus trigger re-create; migration 36's harness passthrough now names its columns so a fixture bootstrapped from a newer SCHEMA still converges. The count is part of the canonical plan document (plan schema 2 -> 3, relevance 3 -> 4) and of each parent's candidate config, preview multiplies the spend estimate and call ceiling by it, and batch-retry retries only the failed repeat. Reports pair per case: a case's delta is the mean over its repeats in the distance population, the bootstrap resamples those means, and `within_case_range_mean` (mean max - min over cases with more than one repeat delta) is reported beside the mean. Scored/failed counts split into distinct cases and attempts; per-case rows carry their repeat. The relevance report treats each completed repeat as one observation, keeps its common set and majority reference in cases, and reports `unstable_case_count`. Batch report schema 5 -> 6, relevance 4 -> 5. Web: attempt rows carry repeat_index; the run aggregation groups retry chains by (case, repeat) and counts cases once; run detail lists one entry per chain. PAA reference evidence and golden fixture re-rendered. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RzSnFgZ2rHydpunbz2b1V9

- The new repeat-aware relevance path is not covered by the existing relevance integration tests: those tests execute one attempt per case, so they do not verify that repeated observations affect confusion/accuracy while the common set and majority reference remain case-level, or that differing repeat labels increment
unstable_case_count. Add a multi-repeat relevance report test with at least one differing candidate label.
# Every completed repeat is one observation; the common set and
# the reference are still counted in cases.

- The new
NEW.repeat_index IS NOT OLD.repeat_indexcheck is the only protection against reassigning an attempt to another repeat chain, including after the v40→v41 migration. Existing tests cover insertion/retry validation and schema versioning, but do not attempt this update on a migrated or fresh database; a broken trigger recreation could therefore pass the suite. Add a direct immutability test forrepeat_index.

metricnow averages the grouped pairs, but its callers still add every completed correction score, including scores withbaseline_abstainedorcandidate_abstained. The Python report explicitly excludes those observations from the distance population, so a repeated case can produce a different web mean than the canonical report. Preserve the abstain flags through this grouping (or filter before callingmetric) so only in-population repeats are averaged.

Addressed in 6f62a27: aggregation now counts chains per attempted case and fails with "repeat population is incomplete" when a case is missing a planned repeat, alongside the existing incomplete-population check. Regression test covers a two-repeat plan with only repeat 1 present.

Addressed in 6f62a27: SkippedPair now carries the parent's planned repeats and the segment summary takes the max over attempted and skipped pairs, so an all-skipped variant reports the plan's repeat count. Test: test_all_skipped_variant_reports_planned_repeats.
- Failed exclusions carry repeat_index in the report JSON, sort key, and markdown so repeats of one case are distinguishable. - A variant whose every pair was skipped reports the plan's repeat count rather than falling back to 1. - Web aggregation rejects a run where an attempted case is missing a planned repeat, matching the existing incomplete-population check. - Docs no longer claim repeats made no schema change; migration 41 adds evaluation_experiments.repeat_index. A chain count alone accepted indexes 1 and 3 for a two-repeat plan. Each case must now hold repeat indexes exactly 1..repeats. Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RzSnFgZ2rHydpunbz2b1V9
B1 from the experiments review: run-to-run variance was invisible because every (case, variant) pair got one draw.
What changes
--repeats Nonscout feedback batch-replay(default 1). Every scored pair gets N attempts; the count is in the canonical plan document (movesplan_sha256; plan schema 2→3, relevance plan 3→4), in the preview's spend estimate and call ceiling (multiplied), and in each parent'scandidate_config(repeats).evaluation_experiments.repeat_index(NOT NULL DEFAULT 1, so every existing row is repeat 1). Each repeat is its own retry chain;attempt_numberstays unique per (run, case) across repeats, so no table rebuild and no foreign-key churn. Migration 41 is ADD COLUMN plus a lifecycle-trigger re-create that makesrepeat_indeximmutable. Migration 36's harness passthrough now names its columns so a fixture bootstrapped from a newer SCHEMA still converges (it wasSELECT *).batch-retryretries only the failed (case, repeat) chains;--phase-run-idselects every repeat of the named cases.within_case_range_mean(mean max−min over cases with >1 repeat delta) beside the mean.scored_case_count/failed_case_countcount distinct cases; newscored_attempt_count/failed_attempt_countcount attempts; per-case rows carryrepeat_index. Schema 5→6.repeat_countandunstable_case_count(cases whose repeats disagreed on the candidate label). Schema 4→5.repeat_index; run aggregation groups chains by (case, repeat), counts cases once, and requires a repeat-1 root to be attempt Package PAA evidence for reviewers and align public claims #1 while later repeats' roots only need no predecessor; run detail lists one entry per chain and labels repeats >1.Not in this PR
repeatsstill expands separate-rNsweeps. Moving it onto this flag (and the manifest/pooling that readsrepeatper cell) is a follow-up.Deploy note
Schema migration 41 runs on first open. Plan hashes move again, same re-snapshot as #22.
Verified locally: full Python suite (2481 passed), ruff, mypy, web tests (821), tsc, eslint on touched files.
