🎯 Changes

Fixes #2190.

When an orderBy + limit query can't use an index, the dev-only warning always said the query "requires an index" and suggested createIndex((row) => row.field) — even when that index already existed and was skipped only because its compareOptions (e.g. nulls, stringSort) don't match the query's. The fallback to loading all data is correct; only the message was misleading.

Inside the existing development-only block, the compiler now checks whether an index on the field exists but none matches the query's compareOptions. In that case it warns about the mismatch and suggests createIndex with the matching compareOptions. Otherwise the original message is unchanged. Production builds are unaffected.

  • Added the new message to tests/fixtures/development-only-messages.json.
  • Tests in order-by.test.ts: the issue repro (expects the mismatch warning, then creates the suggested index and checks the same rows come back with no warning), and a check that the original message still fires when no index exists.

✅ Checklist

  • I have tested this code locally with pnpm test.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Development warnings for limited, sorted queries now distinguish between a missing index and an index configured with different comparison options.
    • When comparison options don’t match, the warning shows the query’s options and a suggested index configuration. If no index exists, the existing missing-index warning remains.
    • Adding an index with matching comparison options suppresses the warning.

When an orderBy with limit query finds an index on the ordered field but
the index was built with different compareOptions, findIndexForField
rejects it and the query falls back to a full load. The warning then
claimed no index existed and suggested the createIndex call that was
already made.

Tell the two cases apart: if an index on the field exists but none
matches the query's compareOptions, say so and show the createIndex
call with matching compareOptions.

📝 Walkthrough

The limited orderBy diagnostic now distinguishes an existing field index with mismatched compareOptions from a missing field index. Tests cover both warnings and verify that a matching index suppresses the warning.

When no usable index matches, the diagnostic checks for an index on the ordered field. It reports a compareOptions mismatch and suggests matching options, or retains the missing-index warning. Tests cover both cases and confirm that a matching index suppresses the warning.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2190 requires a distinct warning when an index matches the ordered field but no index matches the query compareOptions. The change in packages/db/src/query/compiler/order-by.ts checks field indexes and emits the mismatch warning with the query options and a matching createIndex example. It preserves the existing warning when no field index exists. The development-only guard remains in place. Tests cover the mismatch case, returned rows, warning suppression after creating the matching index, and the missing-index case. The development-only message fixture and patch changeset are also updated.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within Issue #2190. The source change updates only the affected development warning. The fixture update supports development-message validation. The tests verify the requested warning behavior and fallback results. The changeset documents the published patch. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated files are changed.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make the suggested createIndex call usable without a default index type.

When a collection has no defaultIndexType, this call fails because it omits indexType. The new test uses that configuration: it creates the existing index with an explicit BasicIndex. Include an explicit index type in the suggestion, or tell users to configure defaultIndexType first. (tanstack.com)
