🎯 Changes

vite build builds client, SSR and server one after another, in one process.

The plugin keeps one compiler for each environment. It only deletes the compiler in buildStart. But each environment starts only once, so the compiler is never deleted.

The compiler has closures that use this. this points to the whole module graph. So the client graph stays in memory until the build ends.

But nothing needs the client graph after the client build. The client files are already written. SSR and server build their own graphs. The only thing they need from the client build is the list of server functions, and that list (serverFnsById) is kept outside the compiler.

The fix: also delete the compiler in closeBundle.

closeBundle() {
  if (this.environment.mode === 'build') {
    compilers.delete(this.environment.name)
  }
},

Dev mode does not change.

Our app ran out of memory in the server build. Two other packages also kept the same graph. Both are fixed upstream now: Tailwind (tailwindlabs/tailwindcss#20531) and exsolve (unjs/exsolve#63). After those, this compiler is the last one.

Memory at the start of each step (after GC). "After" means all three fixes. This fix alone does not change the numbers, because the other two still keep the graph.

step before after
ssr 759 MB 143 MB
nitro 1327 MB 204 MB

The test runs a transform, calls closeBundle, runs GC, and checks that this is gone. It fails without the fix.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Reduced memory usage during builds by releasing compiler resources as each build environment finishes. This helps large applications avoid excessive memory growth when client, server-rendered, and server bundles are built together, reducing the risk of builds exceeding available memory.
    • Compiler resources remain available outside build mode.

The build-mode closeBundle hook now removes the current environment’s compiler from the compiler map. A new test checks whether a transformed hook context can be collected after the client bundle closes.

official JavaScript WeakRef garbage collection timing guarantee and Node.js exposed gc documentation

💡 Result:

- **ECMAScript guarantee:** A `WeakRef` does not keep its target alive, and the language makes no promise about *when—or whether* an otherwise unreachable target will be collected. A target is kept alive through the end of the current JavaScript job after a `WeakRef` is created or its `deref()` returns the target. So `deref()` may keep returning the object, potentially indefinitely; don’t use collection timing or finalizers for correctness. ([developer.mozilla.org](https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/WeakRef))
- **Node.js `gc`:** The current Node.js CLI docs describe `--expose-gc` as exposing V8’s `gc` extension, with an example checking `globalThis.gc` before calling it. The docs do **not** promise that calling it will collect a particular object, make a `WeakRef` return `undefined`, or run a finalizer by a particular time. Treat it as a V8-specific, experimental testing/debugging hook—not a portable GC-timing guarantee. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/docs/latest/api/cli.html?utm_source=openai))

Gate the WeakRef assertion behind an opt-in test flag.

WeakRef does not guarantee when, or whether, an unreachable object is reclaimed. The package’s normal test:unit and test scripts run this test unconditionally, so the assertion can fail even after closeBundle releases the compiler context. Gate this test with an opt-in environment variable, consistent with the repository’s existing GC tests.
