The Sunday digest did run today, but 0 of 510 emails were sent. I could not kick-start a real send from this agent (workflow dispatch returns 403, and this environment has no Gmail secrets).

What happened

Run When Result
Scrape (schedule) today 10:45 UTC success
Digest (schedule) today 13:30 UTC failure — Gmail SMTP 535 BadCredentials, 0/510 delivered
Digest (push after #63) today 15:28 UTC success, but dry-run only — push never sends mail

Same SMTP 535 failure on last Sunday (Sep 6). Last successful scheduled digest: Aug 30. Telegram was also skipped because the Gmail step failed first, and GitHub Actions skips later steps by default.

The bot was not “down”. GMAIL_APP_PASSWORD is being rejected, and each failure then waited ~90 minutes (17 batches × 6 min pause) before exiting.

What you need to do to send today’s mail

  1. Create a new Gmail App Password for kamsirichard1960@gmail.com (2FA must be on).
  2. Update the GMAIL_APP_PASSWORD secret: Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions.
  3. Manually run ScoutBot — Weekly Sunday Digest:
    Actions → digest.yml → Run workflow

Until that secret is rotated, any re-run will fail the same way.

Code in this PR (after the secret is fixed)

  • Abort the digest on the first SMTP 535 instead of sleeping through remaining batches
  • Still send the Telegram digest if Gmail fails
  • Same fail-fast for announce.py
  • Unit test covering the auth abort path

SMTP 535 (bad GMAIL_APP_PASSWORD) was retried across all 17 batches
with 6-minute pauses, so the weekly digest burned ~90 minutes and
still delivered 0/510 emails. Abort on the first auth error, and keep
the Telegram digest running even if Gmail fails.
