Summary

This PR collects fixes for flaky integration tests so they can be tracked and reviewed in one place. Each fix is its own commit, test-only and a few lines. No SDK code changes.

# Flaky test Cause Fix Confidence Commit
1 TestRealtimeConn_RTN12_Connection_Close/RTN12d Race in the shared fake clock ablytest.TimeFuncs: a test can be handed an already-cancelled timer Drop cancelled timers before offering them, and close the timer channel on cancellation as ablyutil.After does (internal/ablytest/ablytest.go; covers all 13 tests that use TimeFuncs) ✅ Proven: reproduced, and fixed under reproduction 8b88838, 2692064
2 TestRealtimePresence_Presence_Enter_Update_Leave The test doesn't wait for client1's initial presence SYNC; a late SYNC delivers client2 as PRESENT, and the live ENTER/UPDATE is then dropped as a duplicate Wait for the initial sync with Presence.Get before client2 acts; exact assertions kept (ably/realtime_presence_integration_test.go) ✅ Mechanism confirmed by logging the protocol messages against the sandbox; the CI failure itself was not reproduced ec5cfe7 → 3671244

Both flakes have been around since before the v2 work. They surfaced on CI for #712 and #719, which is why they were investigated.

Flake 1: TestRealtimeConn_RTN12_Connection_Close/RTN12d

The failure

Seen on CI (integration-test (1.25, json), #719). It passed on the other three jobs and on re-run.

realtime_conn_spec_integration_test.go:537: timed out waiting for channel receive
--- FAIL: .../RTN12d_:_should_abort_reconnection_timer_while_disconnected_on_closed (30.00s)

Root cause

TimeFuncs' fake after() hands each timer to the test from a goroutine:

select {
case afterCalls <- afterCall: // give the timer to the test (unbuffered channel)
case <-ctx.Done(): // timer already cancelled: drop it
}
Step What happens
1 The event loop's first Receive registers a 1-minute timer. CONNECTED arrives, Receive returns, and its defer cancel() cancels that timer.
2 The next Receive registers the 6-minute idle timer. This is the one the test means to fire.
3 If the goroutine for the cancelled 1-minute timer runs late, it reaches the select with both cases ready, and Go picks one at random.
4 About half the time the test gets the dead timer. It fires it, nothing listens, no DISCONNECTED arrives, and the test times out after 30 s.

Fix

if ctx.Err() != nil {
	close(ch) // like ablyutil.After, a cancelled timer closes its channel
	return // already cancelled; don't hand stale timers to the test (select would pick randomly)
}

A cancelled timer can never fire, so no test can usefully receive one, and the existing ctx.Done() branch already intended this.

Channel close, from review (2692064): the production ablyutil.After closes its channel when the context is cancelled, and the SDK depends on that:

  • realtime_conn.go waits on that channel alone for the reconnection delay;
  • NewTicker and ContextWithTimeout only stop once it closes.

The fake returned without closing on two paths: the new early return, and the existing "cancelled before the test received it" branch. Both now close(ch), so the fake matches ablyutil.After whenever the context is cancelled. A nanosecond-wide window remains if cancellation lands between the check and the select; closing it fully isn't worth it for a race this rare.

Evidence

Experiment Result
Plain local stress, no fix (1,800+ runs) 0 failures; it doesn't reproduce without help
Without the fix, a few ms of scheduling delay injected into the timer goroutine 8 of 30 failed at line 537; every failure received the cancelled D=1m timer
With the fix, same injection 100 of 100 passed

Flake 2: TestRealtimePresence_Presence_Enter_Update_Leave

The failures

Run Branch Failing step Expected Got
39564890840 integration/v2 ENTER (line 175) 2 (ENTER) 1 (PRESENT)
39619921907 this PR UPDATE (line 186) 4 (UPDATE) 1 (PRESENT)

Root cause

Logging client1's protocol messages against the sandbox (8 runs, all the same shape) shows:

client1  ATTACHED hasPresence=true   ← even on a brand-new, empty channel (RTP1)
client1 SYNC members=[] ← initial sync arrives ~80 ms later, asynchronously
client2  ATTACHED hasPresence=false
client1  PRESENCE ENTER  client2
client1  PRESENCE UPDATE client2
client1  PRESENCE LEAVE  client2

The test never waited for that initial SYNC. When it's late, as can happen on a slow run, it arrives after client2 has entered or updated:

  1. The SYNC is built from the channel's current state, so it carries client2 as PRESENT, and the SDK emits it with the action the server sent (RTP2d1).
  2. The live ENTER or UPDATE that follows has the same msgSerial and index, so IsNewerThan (RTP2b2) says it isn't newer and it's dropped (RTP2a).
  3. The test reads PRESENT where it expects ENTER (the first failure) or UPDATE (the second).

Fix

err = client1Channel.Attach(context.Background())
assert.NoError(t, err)
// ATTACHED is followed by an initial presence SYNC (RTP1). Wait for it, so
// that a late SYNC can't deliver client2 as PRESENT in place of the live
// ENTER or UPDATE asserted below.
_, err = client1Channel.Presence.Get(context.Background())
assert.NoError(t, err)
  • Presence.Get waits for the sync by default and blocks until it completes, so client2 only acts once client1's presence set is in sync.
  • The exact ENTER and UPDATE assertions are unchanged from main, so the test still proves live events are delivered.

History: ec5cfe7 first made the test accept PRESENT. Review pointed out that this stopped the test covering live ENTER/UPDATE delivery. 3671244 replaces it with the sync wait and restores the exact assertions, so the net change to this file against main is just the 5 lines above.

Remaining caveat: the server may start another sync mid-test at any time (RTP18). That would need a re-sync during a sub-second test, and none was seen in any run. If it ever happens, the exact assertions will fail visibly instead of hiding it.

Evidence

Check Result
Client1's ATTACHED has HAS_PRESENCE and an async initial SYNC follows ✅ Seen in all 8 logged sandbox runs (~80 ms gap)
SDK emits the server's action; an equal msgSerial/index is "not newer" ✅ Confirmed in code (realtime_presence.go, IsNewerThan), matching RTP2d1 and RTP2b2
Presence.Get blocks until the sync completes ✅ GetWithOptions → syncWait → <-pres.syncDone, closed when the sync ends
Reproduce the CI failure itself ❌ Not reproduced locally (it needs a slow sync); the mechanism is confirmed, the exact CI timing is not

Validation (this branch, both fixes together)

Check Result
go build ./..., go vet with default, unit and integration tags, gofmt -l ✅
go test -tags=unit ./... ✅
Every test in the 4 files that use TimeFuncs (54 tests), ×3 ✅ (run with fix 1)
The same 54 tests ×2 with -race, as CI runs them, after the channel-close change ✅ no failures, no data races
RTN12 ×5 and the presence test ×5 against the sandbox (json), after the channel-close change ✅
Presence test with the sync wait: ×10 json, ×10 msgpack, ×5 json with -race, plus the whole presence test file once ✅
Both fixed tests together ×5 against the sandbox (json) ✅

Compatibility with open work

In-memory trial merges; no branches were changed:

Merged into Result

Reviewer notes

  • 4 commits, 2 files, test code only:
    • flake 1: the fix, then the channel close from review (8b88838, 2692064);
    • flake 2: the first attempt, then its replacement from review (ec5cfe7, 3671244). The net change to the presence test against main is only the sync wait.
  • Adding future flakes here: one commit per flake, plus a row in the summary table and its own section.
  • Supersedes ably: accept PRESENT in the presence Enter/Update/Leave test #721, which held fix 2 on its own and is now closed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Improved reliability of time-related test behavior when a context is canceled.
    • Updated presence integration test expectations to accept presence messages delivered through synchronization, while retaining client ID and data checks.

These changes affect test behavior and validation; no end-user-facing product changes are included.

TimeFuncs' fake after() registers each timer from a goroutine that
selects between sending it on the unbuffered afterCalls channel and
returning when its context is done. If that goroutine is scheduled
late, it can reach the select with its context already cancelled while
the test is waiting on afterCalls. Both cases are then ready, Go picks
one at random, and about half the time the test receives a timer nobody
is listening to any more.

TestRealtimeConn_RTN12_Connection_Close/RTN12d hit this on CI. The
first Receive of the connection's event loop registers a 1m timer and
cancels it as soon as CONNECTED arrives; the test meant to fire the 6m
idle timer of the second Receive, but got the stale 1m one, fired it,
and timed out waiting for a DISCONNECTED that never came.

Return before offering the timer if its context is already cancelled.
This removes the realistic interleaving for every test that uses
TimeFuncs. A narrow window remains if the context is cancelled between
the check and the select; closing it would mean filtering at every
receive site, which isn't worth it for a race this rare.

TestRealtimePresence_Presence_Enter_Update_Leave occasionally fails on
CI because client1's subscriber receives PRESENT where the test expects
ENTER or UPDATE.

The SDK emits each presence message to subscribers with the action the
server sent (RTP2d1), so a PRESENT can only come from the server,
typically in a SYNC. Ably may start a sync at any time (RTP18). If one
carries client2's current state before the matching ENTER or UPDATE
arrives, the member is emitted as PRESENT, and the later ENTER or
UPDATE has the same msgSerial and index, so it isn't newer and is
dropped (RTP2a, RTP2b2). Both CI failures fit this, one at the ENTER
step and one at the UPDATE step. We could not reproduce it against the
sandbox, so the trigger is inferred rather than observed.

Accept PRESENT alongside ENTER and UPDATE at those two steps. The test
still checks the client ID and data of each message, and LEAVE stays
strict, since a sync never delivers a leave as PRESENT. Skipping PRESENT
instead would hang the test, because the real event is dropped as a
duplicate.
@sacOO7 sacOO7 changed the title ablytest: don't hand already-cancelled timers to tests in TimeFuncs test: fix flaky integration tests (TimeFuncs stale timers, presence SYNC) Oct 21, 2026
…lled

ablyutil.After closes its channel when the context is cancelled, and
the SDK relies on that: realtime_conn.go waits on the channel alone for
the reconnection delay, and NewTicker and ContextWithTimeout only stop
once it closes. TimeFuncs' fake returned without closing the channel
on two cancellation paths, the early return added for already-cancelled
timers and the existing branch taken when the context is cancelled
before a test receives the timer. Code waiting on that channel could
then block forever.

Close the channel on both paths, so the fake matches ablyutil.After
whenever the context is cancelled.

The previous commit made TestRealtimePresence_Presence_Enter_Update_Leave
accept PRESENT in place of ENTER and UPDATE. That hid the flake, but it
also stopped the test checking that live ENTER and UPDATE events are
delivered at all.

Logging the protocol messages against the sandbox shows where the
PRESENT comes from. Client1's ATTACHED carries HAS_PRESENCE even on a
new, empty channel, and the initial SYNC follows about 80ms later. The
test didn't wait for it. If that SYNC is late and arrives after client2
has entered or updated, it carries client2 as PRESENT, and the live
ENTER or UPDATE with the same msgSerial and index is then dropped as
not newer (RTP2a, RTP2b2).

Wait for the initial sync with Presence.Get right after client1
attaches, before client2 does anything, and restore the exact ENTER and
UPDATE assertions.
