Summary

Follow-up to #276. Shrinks the live-loop proof's surface by removing the --allow-remote flag and making the proof loopback-only.

Rationale: the proof self-provisions an API key and sends it on every request, and self-provision exists only on dev-like postures — production-like deployments (staging, preprod, preview) refuse it. So --allow-remote had no real target: it could only reach a remote instance that had self-provision enabled, a configuration with no clear user. Per the repo's own guidance to "recommend what to freeze/delete, not only what to build" and to avoid speculative surface, this refuses any non-loopback host before a credential is minted rather than carrying and documenting a flag for a case that doesn't exist.

Side benefit: it removes the cleartext-credential foot-gun entirely — with no non-loopback path, there is no way to send a minted key over http:// to a remote host.

  • scripts/live_loop_proof.py: drop the --allow-remote argument and the https branch; refuse any non-loopback --api-url with exit 2 and a message pointing at make quickstart. Update the module docstring and the self-provision 403 hint accordingly. The URL sanitizer stays — a loopback URL can still carry userinfo, and the transcript ships to a partner.
  • tests/test_quickstart_path.py: the guard test now asserts a non-loopback host (http or https) is refused with exit 2 and writes no bundle; the unreachable-loopback and sanitizer tests are unchanged.

No application runtime code, no SDK changes — demo script and its test only.

Type of Change

  • refactor
  • test

Validation

  • pytest tests/test_quickstart_path.py -v — 5 passed (guard, unreachable, sanitizer, documented walkthrough, end-to-end script)
  • python scripts/check_doc_references.py — all references resolve
  • ruff check clean
  • no new claim contradicts SECURITY_LIMITATIONS.md

Risk

  • low

Notes: net removal of code (−56/+24), narrows an opt-in path to loopback-only. No migrations, no API changes.

Note

Low Risk
Demo script and tests only; narrows an opt-in remote path and hardens local credential handling with no API or runtime service changes.

Overview
Makes live_loop_proof loopback-only by removing --allow-remote and the HTTPS branch for remote targets. Any non-loopback --api-url now exits 2 before minting a key, with messaging that points at make quickstart.

httpx clients used for the proof (main client and trust-keys fetch) set trust_env=False so minted X-API-Key traffic stays on loopback even when HTTP_PROXY / HTTPS_PROXY are set.

Tests replace the old remote-guard cases with a single non-loopback refusal check (http and https) and add test_live_loop_proof_ignores_ambient_proxy as a regression guard for proxy hygiene.

Reviewed by Cursor Bugbot for commit 88b9093. Configure here.

Remove --allow-remote. The proof self-provisions a key and sends it on
every request, and self-provision exists only on dev-like postures
(production-like deployments refuse it), so there was no supported remote
target: --allow-remote could only reach a remote instance that had
self-provision enabled, a configuration with no real user. Rather than
carry and document a flag for a speculative case, refuse any non-loopback
host before a credential is minted.

This also removes the cleartext-credential foot-gun entirely (no non-loopback
path exists to send a key over http), shrinking the surface to exactly what
the golden path uses. The URL sanitizer stays: a loopback URL can still
carry userinfo, and the transcript ships to a partner.

Tests: the guard test now asserts a non-loopback host (http or https) is
refused with exit 2 and writes no bundle; the unreachable-loopback and
sanitizer tests are unchanged. Full quickstart-path suite green (5 passed).

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Restricted live-loop setup to loopback HTTP and HTTPS targets.
    • Non-loopback URLs are rejected before credentials are created.
    • Removed support for remote targets and the --allow-remote option.
    • Credential-bearing requests ignore ambient proxy settings.
  • Documentation
    • Updated usage and authentication guidance to reflect loopback-only operation.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for rejecting non-loopback HTTP and HTTPS targets and ignoring unreachable proxy settings.

Walkthrough

The live-loop proof is now loopback-only. It removes --allow-remote, rejects non-loopback HTTP and HTTPS targets before credential creation, disables ambient proxy use, updates guidance, and adds regression tests.

Changes

Loopback target restriction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Enforce loopback-only targets
scripts/live_loop_proof.py
The script removes remote-target support, rejects non-loopback API hosts before credential creation, and directs failures to a local quickstart server.
Disable ambient proxy routing
scripts/live_loop_proof.py
The trust-key and main HTTP clients ignore ambient proxy settings.
Validate target and proxy behavior
tests/test_quickstart_path.py
The tests cover HTTP and HTTPS non-loopback rejection and successful execution with unreachable proxy settings.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0ec4d

This change narrows the demo proof to loopback-only targets and removes the remote cleartext-credential path; no actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks and review.

CI is red here, but it's a repository-wide Actions failure, not this diff.

Every workflow run since ~01:00 UTC today fails at startup within ~2s and produces no job logs (log downloads 404). This reproduces on the base branch and on unrelated PRs:

  • main (push 80d4d6c) — failure
  • unrelated Dependabot PRs (stripe, alembic, greenlet, mcp) — all failure
  • this PR (9a0927a) — same instant-startup failure

That pattern (all jobs, all branches, no logs) is an Actions platform/quota issue, not a test failure.

This change is demo-script-only (net −56/+24) and passes locally:

  • pytest tests/test_quickstart_path.py -v → 5 passed
  • python scripts/check_doc_references.py → all references resolve
  • ruff check → clean

Holding the merge until Actions recovers, then I'll re-run and confirm green. Nothing to fix in the diff.

Comment thread scripts/live_loop_proof.py
Loopback-only stops a remote *target*, but httpx still honors ambient
HTTP_PROXY/HTTPS_PROXY/ALL_PROXY by default (trust_env=True), which could
route the X-API-Key-bearing requests off the loopback host through a proxy.
Disable env trust on both the main client and the trust-keys fetch so the
whole loopback-only guarantee holds regardless of the caller's proxy
environment.

Regression test: with HTTP(S)_PROXY pointed at a dead port and NO_PROXY
cleared, the run still completes (exit 0, bundle written) — which is only
possible if proxy inheritance is off. Re-enabling trust_env would route the
requests through the dead proxy and fail the test.

Verified: quickstart-path suite 6 passed; ruff and check_doc_references clean.

Empty commit to re-trigger CI on #296. The prior runs failed at Actions
startup during a repository-wide platform/quota outage (main and unrelated
PRs all red with no job logs); this probes whether the platform has
recovered. No code change.
