Summary

This PR was rebuilt mid-review. It originally converted nine wallet mutation sites. While it was in review, #305 landed and converted most of them — independently, from another session. Rather than merge a conflicting near-duplicate, I rebased onto #305 and reduced this to what is genuinely still missing.

#305 swept the charge debit, the child reclaim, refund credits, the velocity counters, the Stripe fiat clawback, and the refund reconciler's permit write. Three read-modify-write debits in wallet_engine.py were not in that sweep:

wallet_engine.py:285 sponsor.balance -= budget_credits (sponsor provisioning)
wallet_engine.py:399 parent.balance -= budget_credits (parent delegation)
wallet_engine.py:675 source.balance -= amount (transfer)

Each reads a balance, checks it, and writes the decided value back under a SELECT ... FOR UPDATE that SQLAlchemy drops silently on SQLite. Two concurrent provisions hand out the same credits. A transfer credits the destination with credits the competing writer already rolled back off the source — minting them outright, which is worse than an overdraft because the books balance on neither side.

How the gap was confirmed

Not from reading #305's description — by running this PR's tests against main after it landed. Four of seven failed there; three passed. The three that passed are exactly the paths #305 fixed, so they were dropped (they are no longer regression tests against this base, and test_wallet_ledger_integrity.py already covers them).

What is in the PR now

All three debits route through _apply_balance_delta, which restates balance, spendable status, and the child lifetime cap in the WHERE clause and reports a lost race as whichever check it actually failed. The cap predicate compares against the row's own max_spend rather than a Python-read value — the same shape #305 used in billing_engine, deliberately followed rather than inventing a parallel idiom.

Review then found four more defects in that new code, each fixed with a test confirmed to fail against the unfixed source:

commit defect
9839879 the transfer's destination credit discarded the helper's result — a zero-row credit reported success with the credits on neither side
56c5725 the helper refreshed before checking rowcount, so a vanished destination raised InvalidRequestError: Could not refresh instance instead of WalletNotFoundError
b4c7f0a a stored max_spend of zero was read as no cap by the Python checks while the SQL guard read it as a real cap — a wallet holding 400 refused a 10-credit delegation with Insufficient funds: 400.00000000 < 10
898fa56 that same commit initially refused budget_credits <= 0, which broke a documented contract — SelfProvisionRequest.budget_credits is ge=0. Corrected to refuse only negatives

The 898fa56 entry is a regression this PR introduced and CI caught. It is listed because the review history is more useful than a tidy one.

Type of Change

  • fix

Validation

  • pytest -q — 1742 passed, 35 skipped
  • make trust-release-gate — passed
  • ruff check . clean; mypy clean on wallet_engine.py
  • scripts/check_doc_references.py — all references resolve
  • both PostgreSQL jobs verified against a live PostgreSQL 16: test_permit_postgres_concurrency.py (14) and test_mcp_postgres_multiprocess.py (13)

That last line is the lesson from 898fa56: the earlier "green suite" claim never exercised the Postgres files, because they skip without DATABASE_URL. Both gating jobs are now run locally before each push.

tests/test_wallet_concurrency.py skips on any non-SQLite engine — where FOR UPDATE is honoured, the injected writer would block on a lock that genuinely works. The PostgreSQL side is three real-concurrency conservation tests: six provisions against a budget funding four, five transfers out of one balance, three reclaims of one child.

Risk

  • low

Three call sites and one helper. No migration, no rollback concern, no change to the charge path — that is #305's now. The behavioural changes are that these three operations refuse where they previously lost an update silently, that a refusal names its reason (frozen / cap / balance) instead of always reporting a balance deficit, and that a zero max_spend is enforced as the cap it is.

Note on CI

The Vercel commit status reports "Deployment was blocked" on every head of this branch, and equally on #311 — a separate branch touching zero files under site/. All 16 GitHub Actions check runs are green. This looks like a platform gate rather than anything in either diff.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented concurrent wallet operations from overspending balances or overwriting newer balance changes.
    • Enforced lifetime spending caps and rejected zero or negative provisioning and delegation budgets.
    • Improved reliability for transfers, provisioning, delegation, and child-wallet reclamation during simultaneous activity.
    • Ensured reclaimed balances are credited exactly once, and failed transfers roll back safely when destinations are unavailable.
    • Prevented debits from frozen wallets and rejected stale balance or status changes.
  • Tests

    • Added concurrency coverage across supported database configurations.

Walkthrough

Wallet provisioning, delegation, transfers, and child reclamation now use guarded SQL balance updates. SQLite tests cover stale writes, freezes, caps, and deletion races. PostgreSQL tests cover concurrent provisioning, transfers, and reclamation.

Changes

Wallet concurrency hardening

Layer / File(s) Summary
Guarded wallet mutations
app/services/wallet_engine.py
Wallet operations atomically recheck balance, spendability, and lifetime caps. Provisioning budgets must be positive. Transfers apply relative destination credits and fail when the destination row is missing.
SQLite stale-write validation
tests/test_wallet_concurrency.py
SQLite tests inject competing debits, freezes, cap updates, and destination deletion during wallet operations. The tests verify rollback, unchanged balances, zero-cap enforcement, and rejection of non-positive budgets.
PostgreSQL balance conservation tests
tests/test_permit_postgres_concurrency.py
PostgreSQL tests verify budget-limited provisioning, transfer balance conservation, and single-credit child reclamation.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to b4c7f

The PR adds guarded balance updates for provisioning, delegation, and transfers, but unresolved edge cases can still corrupt wallet balances or lifetime accounting and can return the wrong error when a transfer destination is deleted. These current-head correctness risks should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

Learning: In `PetrefiedThunder/agent-middleware-api`, `WalletModel.updated_at` in `app/db/models.py` uses `Field(default_factory=utc_now)` and has no `onupdate`. Core SQLAlchemy wallet `UPDATE` statements with `synchronize_session=False` bypass ORM attribute mutation, so balance-moving wallet updates must explicitly include `updated_at=utc_now()`. The Stripe refund clawback in `app/services/stripe_integration.py::_handle_refund` follows this rule and has a regression test in `tests/test_stripe_integration.py::TestStripeWebhookIdempotency::test_refund_clawback_advances_the_wallet_timestamp`.

Review response — note the PR was rebuilt mid-review

The 10-finding review ran against cfdf515, the revision before this PR was rebuilt onto #305. Seven of those findings are against code that is no longer in this diff — billing_engine.py, velocity_monitor.py, and refund_reconciliation.py are main's now, via #305. I checked each rather than dismissing them by file:

finding status
Transfer destination credit discards the result Fixed in 9839879
pytest.raises(Exception) too broad Fixed — concrete classes, message kept as secondary
Postgres helpers accept any exception as a refusal Fixed — every non-success asserted
updated_at missing from _apply_balance_delta Already present (line 231)
reverse_velocity_record is a read-modify-write Already fixed on main — it is async and column-relative there
Reclaim ValueError / retryable mapping Not in this diff; reclaim is #305's code
Velocity freeze overwrites closed Not in this diff
Velocity rollover test coverage Not in this diff
Daily limit missing from the charge guard Not in this diff — see below
pytest.mark.anyio vs pytest.mark.asyncio Skipped, see below

The two I did not apply

The async marker. pytest.mark.anyio is the repo's existing convention — tests/test_mcp_trust.py and others use it throughout, and tests/conftest.py provides the anyio_backend fixture that makes it work. Switching one module to pytest.mark.asyncio would make this file the outlier, not the conformist. The tests pass under the current configuration.

The daily limit guard is a fair observation about billing_engine.py on main, not about this PR. I looked at it: the window is real but narrow and fails safe in the common shape — two concurrent charges that both increment daily_spent before either checks will both refuse. The fail-open ordering (A checks under-limit → B increments over-limit → A debits) permits a single charge of overrun by a caller that was under its limit when it checked, which is arguably the intended reading of a daily limit. Either way it belongs in a change to billing_engine.py, not here.

Merge-risk note

The "🟠 High" assessment is computed "up to cfdf5" — the discarded revision. This diff is now three call sites and one helper in wallet_engine.py plus two test files.

Full suite 1737 passed / 35 skipped; ruff and mypy clean; the four SQLite proofs confirmed to fail against this base; the PostgreSQL file (14 tests) verified against a live PostgreSQL 16.

Reject non-positive provisioning budgets.

A negative budget_credits reverses the debit into a credit. It also decreases lifetime_debits. This can create a negative child or agent balance while increasing the parent or sponsor balance.

Validate wallet budgets and return before refreshing deleted wallets.

  • Reject budget_credits <= 0 in WalletEngine.create_agent_wallet() and create_child_wallet(). Direct service callers bypass the HTTP schema and can currently increase the sponsor balance while reducing lifetime_debits, then create a wallet with negative values. Add negative-input tests.
  • If the destination row disappears, check the credit update count before AsyncSession.refresh(). Otherwise, ObjectDeletedError bypasses WalletNotFoundError(to_wallet_id). Add a SQLite test that verifies rollback and the transfer route’s 404 response.

Both outside-diff findings checked against the code. One was real and is fixed in 56c5725; the other is not reachable.

Real: the refresh ran before the rowcount check

Correct, and I reproduced it rather than reasoning about it. Deleting the destination row inside the transfer's read-to-write window gives:

sqlalchemy.exc.InvalidRequestError: Could not refresh instance '<WalletModel at 0x...>'

_apply_balance_delta refreshed unconditionally, so on the one miss that matters — the row is gone, which is the only way a credit guarded on wallet_id alone can match nothing — the refresh raised before the helper could return False and let the caller raise WalletNotFoundError.

The rowcount is now inspected first. A matched row refreshes as before; a miss still refreshes so the caller's error message is built from committed values, but tolerates the row being absent. (ObjectDeletedError subclasses InvalidRequestError, so catching the base covers both.)

Worth being precise about the impact: no money was ever at risk. The exception aborted the transaction and the already-applied debit rolled back with it — I verified the source balance stays at 300. What was wrong was the diagnosis, not the accounting, so the new test asserts both the exception type and the untouched source balance. Confirmed to fail against the unfixed helper with exactly the error above.

Not reachable: non-positive budget_credits

Both request schemas already constrain it:

# app/schemas/billing.py:206 CreateAgentWalletRequest
budget_credits: float = Field(..., gt=0, ...)
# app/schemas/billing.py:243 CreateChildWalletRequest
budget_credits: float = Field(..., gt=0, ...)

So the HTTP surface refuses it, and the only way in is a direct in-process service call. Two further points:

  1. The behaviour is identical before and after this PR. Pre-change, if sponsor.balance < budget_credits with a negative budget is also false, and sponsor.balance -= budget_credits also credits. This PR neither introduced nor widened it.
  2. A service-layer positivity check is reasonable defence in depth, but it is a change to create_agent_wallet/create_child_wallet input validation, not to the lost-update guards this PR is about — and it wants its own invalid-input tests for both methods.

Happy to do it as a follow-up; I'd rather not widen a PR that exists to close a concurrency gap into input validation.

Suite: 1738 passed / 35 skipped. ruff and mypy clean.

Reject negative wallet budgets before the guarded update.

A negative budget_credits credits the sponsor or parent and creates a negative wallet balance. A later child reclaim clears that negative child balance without reversing the parent credit because reclaim_amount > 0 is false. This creates credits.

503-506: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Treat Decimal("0") as a child spending cap.

max_spend=Decimal("0") is a valid persisted cap. The SQL guard rejects the debit, but these truthiness checks skip the cap branch and report InsufficientFundsError instead. Use is not None in both prechecks and fallback error paths. Add delegation and transfer tests for a zero-cap child wallet.

Both outside-diff findings from this round are fixed in b4c7f0a. The zero-cap one was a genuinely good catch and I was wrong to have shrugged at the sibling of it earlier.

Zero lifetime cap — real, and mine

max_spend = Decimal("0") was read two different ways inside the same function. The guarded UPDATE compares lifetime_debits against the column, so a zero cap already refused the debit. The Python checks used truthiness, so zero read as no cap configured: the pre-check waved the debit through, and the failure path skipped the cap branch entirely.

The symptom is stark. Against the unfixed source the new test reports:

app.services.agent_money.InsufficientFundsError: Insufficient funds: 400.00000000 < 10

A wallet holding 400 credits, refusing a 10-credit delegation, blaming the balance. All four checks (delegation and transfer × pre-check and failure path) now use is not None.

The defect worth naming isn't the message — it's that my SQL guard and my Python guard disagreed about what zero means. That disagreement is exactly the kind of thing that outlives the person who wrote it.

Non-positive budgets — accepted, with the reasoning corrected

I pushed back on this twice on reachability grounds, and the reachability point still stands: both request schemas carry gt=0, so it cannot arrive over HTTP. But your escalation named the mechanism, and the mechanism is what changed my mind: the guard a negative budget meets is balance >= budget_credits, which it satisfies trivially, so the debit runs as a credit. The sponsor gains and the new wallet opens holding a negative balance — and for a child that state cannot be unwound, because reclaim_child_wallet only credits back a positive reclaim_amount.

"The schema blocks it" is a weaker argument than "the service must not corrupt state when called directly", and the two methods being hardened here are precisely the ones that would. Both now refuse before touching a wallet.

Validation

  • 1742 passed / 35 skipped; ruff and mypy clean; make trust-release-gate passed
  • All four new tests confirmed to fail against the unfixed source — the zero-cap pair by blaming the balance on a funded wallet, the non-positive pair by not raising at all

Additional Suggestion:

SelfProvisionRequest.budget_credits allows 0 via ge=0, but create_agent_wallet now rejects non-positive budgets, causing an unhandled 500 and an orphaned sponsor wallet on zero-budget self-provision.

Fix on Vercel

claude added 5 commits August 19, 2026 06:17
… updates

#305 converted the charge debit, the child reclaim, refunds, the velocity
counters, and the Stripe clawback to guarded UPDATEs. Three read-modify-write
debits in wallet_engine were not in that sweep and are still live:

  wallet_engine.py:285 sponsor.balance -= budget_credits (provisioning)
  wallet_engine.py:399 parent.balance -= budget_credits (delegation)
  wallet_engine.py:675 source.balance -= amount (transfer)

Each reads a balance, checks it, and writes the decided value back under a
SELECT ... FOR UPDATE that SQLAlchemy drops silently on SQLite. Two
concurrent provisions hand out the same credits; a transfer credits the
destination with credits the competing writer already rolled back off the
source, minting them outright.

All three now route through _apply_balance_delta, which restates balance,
spendable status, and the child lifetime cap in the WHERE clause and reports
a lost race as whichever check it actually failed. The cap predicate compares
against the row's own max_spend rather than a value read into Python, the
same way #305 shaped it in billing_engine, so a concurrently changed cap is
honoured too.

Tests

tests/test_wallet_concurrency.py covers only these three paths; the ones #305
fixed are already covered by tests/test_wallet_ledger_integrity.py. All four
are confirmed to fail against this base, and three of them fail by
succeeding -- the operation completes when it should have been refused,
including a delegation debiting a parent frozen mid-operation. The fourth
pins the sponsor-provisioning guard: that path awaits nothing between its
read and its write, so there is no seam to inject a competing commit into.

The module skips on any non-SQLite engine, where the injected writer would
block on a lock that genuinely works. tests/test_permit_postgres_concurrency
gains three real-concurrency conservation tests -- six provisions against a
budget funding four, five transfers out of one balance, three reclaims of one
child -- verified against a live PostgreSQL 16.

…he proofs

Review follow-ups on the three guarded debits.

The transfer's destination credit discarded the helper's result. The source
debit is already applied in the same transaction, so a credit matching zero
rows left transfer reporting success with the credits removed from the
source and never added to the destination. Only wallet_id guards that write,
so a miss means the row is gone; the transfer now aborts.

The proofs asserted pytest.raises(Exception), which would accept an
AttributeError from the injection wrapper or a driver fault as a refusal.
They now name the concrete class -- InsufficientFundsError for the funds
refusals, ValueError for the frozen-parent refusal -- and keep the message
check as a secondary assertion. The PostgreSQL conservation tests likewise
assert that every non-success is the expected refusal, so a pool timeout or
a deadlock can no longer produce the right split for the wrong reason.

… to refresh

_apply_balance_delta refreshed the wallet before inspecting rowcount. When the
guarded UPDATE matched no row because the row was gone, the refresh raised
InvalidRequestError ("Could not refresh instance") and that reached the caller
in place of the miss the helper exists to report -- so a transfer to a deleted
destination surfaced an opaque SQLAlchemy error rather than WalletNotFoundError.

The rowcount is now inspected first. A matched row is refreshed as before; a
miss still refreshes, so the caller's error message is built from committed
values, but tolerates the row being absent.

No money was ever at risk here: the exception aborted the transaction and the
already-applied debit rolled back with it. The defect was the diagnosis, not
the accounting, which is why the new test asserts both the exception type and
that the source balance is untouched.

Confirmed to fail against the unfixed helper with the exact InvalidRequestError.

… budgets

Two input-shape defects on the debits this PR guards, both found in review.

A stored max_spend of Decimal("0") was read two different ways inside the same
function. The guarded UPDATE compares lifetime_debits against the column, so a
zero cap correctly refused the debit. The Python checks around it used
truthiness, so zero read as "no cap configured": the pre-check waved the debit
through, and the failure path skipped the cap branch and reported an empty
balance instead. The result was a wallet holding 400 credits refusing a
10-credit delegation with "Insufficient funds: 400.00000000 < 10". All four
checks (delegation and transfer, pre-check and failure path) now test
`is not None`, so both halves agree with the SQL.

Non-positive budget_credits is now refused before either provisioning debit.
The guard a negative budget would meet is `balance >= budget_credits`, which it
satisfies trivially, so the debit ran as a credit: the sponsor or parent gained
and the new wallet opened holding a negative balance. A child in that state
cannot be unwound by a later reclaim, which only credits back a positive
reclaim_amount. Both request schemas already require gt=0, so this was never
reachable over HTTP -- but the service must not corrupt state when called
directly, and the two methods being hardened here are exactly the ones that
would.

All four new tests are confirmed to fail against the unfixed source: the two
zero-cap cases report insufficient funds on a funded wallet, and the
non-positive cases do not raise at all.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01FsXYfTHDLiFNQ24R5JPN7H
The previous commit refused budget_credits <= 0. That was wrong, and CI
caught it: tests/test_permit_postgres_concurrency.py seeds a destination
wallet with budget_credits=0 and the guard rejected it.

Zero is a legal, documented input. SelfProvisionRequest.budget_credits is
declared ge=0 (app/routers/dev_keys.py:64), so a zero-budget self-provision
is a supported request that opens an empty wallet for later top-up. Refusing
it raised after the caller's sponsor wallet had already been committed --
answering 500 and leaving an orphaned sponsor behind.

The hazard was only ever the negative case: the guard balance >= budget is
trivially satisfied by a negative amount, so the debit runs as a credit. Zero
debits nothing and opens an empty wallet, which is exactly what the caller
asked for. Both guards now refuse only budget_credits < 0.

Adds a test that a zero budget opens an empty wallet and leaves the sponsor
balance untouched, so the self-provision contract is pinned rather than
implied.

Verified against a live PostgreSQL 16 this time, not just SQLite: both jobs
that gate this PR pass locally -- test_permit_postgres_concurrency.py (14)
and test_mcp_postgres_multiprocess.py (13). The regression reached CI because
the previous run only exercised SQLite, where those files skip.
