What this changes

Nemotron's ModelOpt checkpoints (NVFP4, FP8, bf16 lane rows) now load on cards below sm_90. Before this, they were refused at load with ModeloptNeedsSm90. One commit on main.

The kernels already had what these cards need. The lane matmul decodes FP4 and FP8 to bf16 for mma.sync, and its cluster code is compiled out below sm_90 (qmmf.cu). Without clusters, qmmf.plan sums the K slices through fp32 partials and reduce_kernel. The family never passed it a partials buffer, so the load refused those cards instead.

  • cuda_state.zig: each stream's scratch gets lane_part. It holds the most partials any dense shape writes at rows short of fusing (qmmf.fused_rows - 1), computed with the lane's own plan. That is 22 MB a stream for Nemotron 3.5 Lightning, set by o_proj at split-K 8.
  • cuda_kernels.zig: Ops carries the buffer to decode rows (dense) and prompt rows (prefillDense, for the bf16 and FP8G rows the lane takes). The sm_90 refusal goes.
  • cuda_engine.zig: Engine.ops() passes the bound buffers' lane_part.

The bits. reduce_kernel adds the slices in the cluster path's order, slice 0 and then 1 to SK − 1, before the tensor scale. So a card without clusters makes the same sums as one with them. On sm_90 and later nothing changes except a buffer each stream doesn't use.

Receipt

  • Environment: RTX 4090 (24 GB, sm_89), Windows 11, driver 616.56, CUDA 13.3, Zig 0.17.0, -Dsm=89. main does not build on Windows yet, so the receipts ran this commit on Windows: the native CUDA server, and Qwen3.5-2B and Qwen3.8-27B on CUDA #836's branch (5e1c3fea); the Nemotron sources it touches are the same as main's. Checkpoint: nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Lightning-30B-A3B-NVFP4, with its MTP head drafting.
  • Before: the native CUDA engine cannot load … (ModeloptNeedsSm90).
  • After, --context 16384 --parallel 2. Startup: model 19.51 GiB, two streams of 0.18 GiB, a 1.4 GiB prompt cache.
  • Exactness:
    • bench_concurrent --levels 1,2 --alone --serial: 24 of 24 alone and 12 of 12 serial equal.
    • Drafted against "draft": false on five prompts, greedy and seeded T 0.7: 10 of 10 equal.
  • Decode (bench_openai, 128 tokens): 468 code / 363 chat tok/s sampled, 553 / 414 greedy. Drafts accepted 3,977 of 6,153.
  • Prompt: bench_cache --require-cold, a cold 2,570-token prompt in 0.176 s (qualified).
  • Tests:
    • zig build test: 743 of 757 passed, 14 skipped, 0 failed.
    • test-cuda-host: 469 of 474 passed, 5 skipped.
    • tf-cuda-test quant-ref, modelopt, glue and smoke pass. quant-ref's NVFP4 [320, 2560] takes split-K 4, so on this card it runs the reduce path: within float64 tolerance, and every row count's bits are equal.
    • zig fmt --check is clean. The lean check reports 528 problems, the same as main.
  • Not run, and why: sm_90 and later, Linux, GB10, since I have no such machine; this change takes the same path there, the cluster. Ampere (sm_80/86) also takes this path but was not run.

Another checkpoint it opens. #897's Nemotron 3.5 Bolt 74B-A9B stores its Mamba in_proj and out_proj in NVFP4. With this change it serves on the 4090, text only, one stream:

Checklist

  • Every token still goes through the lane rounds. No serial path, and nothing that needs drafts off.
  • Drafted output equals "draft": false, a resumed prompt equals a fresh one, and concurrent equals solo.
  • No precision traded for speed. The reduce sums the slices in the cluster path's order.
  • Prompt processing is no slower than the last release. On sm_90 and later the launches are unchanged.
  • The description says which platforms I ran: CUDA sm_89 on Windows. Not sm_90 and later, Linux or Metal.
  • New tests fail before the change, pass after it, and skip cleanly without their dependency. No new test: the reduce path already has quant-ref's coverage on these cards, and before this change the load refused them.
  • Comments and docstrings are one line. No measurements or history in the source.
  • No personal data, machine names, internal hosts or local paths. No AI attribution lines.

…reduced through a per-stream buffer

The lane matmul already reduces its K slices through fp32 partials where a card has no clusters (qmmf.plan's
reduce, qmmf.cu's reduce_kernel), and its FP4 and FP8 decode to bf16 for mma.sync, but the family passed it no
partials buffer and refused sm_89 and below at load. Each stream's scratch now holds the most partials any dense
shape writes at rows short of fusing, Ops carries it to decode and prompt rows, and the refusal goes. The reduce
adds the slices in the cluster path's order, so the sums do not change.

Thank you, @BobClawblaw, for adding the reduction buffer so ModelOpt checkpoints can run below sm_90.

Two paths need attention. At cuda_segments.zig:88, each segment's Ops still omits its own partials buffer: a fresh 2,049-token prompt with two segments leaves a one-row tail that writes through a null pointer below sm_90. Also, cuda_engine.zig:159 calls Engine.ops() before Buffers.init, so it reads an uninitialized lane_part field.

Please wire each segment's own buffer and make the loader's Ops valid before scratch exists, then check short tails and the 255/256-row boundary on Ampere or Ada, including MTP, drafts on/off, resumed/fresh and concurrent/solo replies against the unchanged controls. We'd be happy to fold these fixes in ourselves at landing if you prefer.

…and the loader's Ops needs no scratch

A staggered prompt's segments built their Ops without a partials buffer, so below sm_90 a segment's rows short of
fusing wrote the lane matmul's slices through a null pointer; each now passes its own scratch set's lane_part. The
loader took Engine.ops(), which reads the buffers made after it; it now gets an Ops without one, since it uploads and
packs and runs no lane matmul.
… without clusters reduces through

The fp8 and bf16 lane checks ([320, 2048], split-K 4) passed no partials buffer, so at 16 and 128 rows below sm_90
the lane's reduce wrote through a null pointer; they now pass one sized for the widest unfused call, as the fp8 and
nvfp4 tests do.

@ashhart thanks, both confirmed. Fixed at fcb45bde:

  • 2095d023: each staggered segment's Ops carries its own scratch set's lane_part (cuda_segments.zig:88). The loader gets an Ops with no partials, since Engine.ops() reads e.b and Buffers.init comes after it; the loader only uploads and packs.
  • fcb45bde: a third case of the same kind. tf-cuda-test modelopt's fp8 and bf16 lane checks ([320, 2048], split-K 4) passed no partials buffer, so at 16 and 128 rows a card without clusters would reduce through a null pointer. They now pass one, as fp8 and nvfp4 do.

The side stream's Ops (cuda_forward.zig:305) still has none. Its grouped experts, rests, pocket and adapter don't use the lane matmul.

Checks

Setup. RTX 5090 (sm_120), Linux, CUDA 13.3, -Dsm=120. nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Lightning-30B-A3B-NVFP4 with its MTP head drafting. The 5090 has clusters, so I ran two builds:

  • Reduce: qmmf.Lane.load sets clusters false. It takes the path sm_80 to sm_89 take.
  • Cluster: the branch as pushed. This is the unchanged control.

The crash, before and after. tensorfold segments on a 2,049-token prompt at 2 segments:

  • At 663a6424, reduce build: CUDA_ERROR_ILLEGAL_ADDRESS.
  • At fcb45bde: passes.

Segments. Ten prompts of 255, 256, 2,049, 2,303, 2,304, 4,097, 4,351, 4,352, 6,399 and 8,193 tokens, so one-row tails and both sides of the 255/256 boundary at 1 to 4 segments.

  • Every state, head, logits and hidden hash at 2, 3 and 4 segments equals one segment's, in both builds.
  • The reduce build's hashes equal the cluster build's.

Served (serve --context 16384 --parallel 4 --segments 4). Chats whose templated prompts are 255, 256, 2,049, 2,303, 2,304, 4,351, 4,352 and 8,193 tokens, 48 tokens each.

  • Drafted equals "draft": false, greedy and seeded at T 0.7.
  • A repeat and a second turn resume from kept states and equal a --prompt-cache-gib 0 server's replies, so resumed equals fresh.
  • Two waves of four prompts at once equal each alone.
  • All 56 token SHAs are equal across the reduce build, the cluster build and the cache-off reduce build.

Tests.

  • tf-cuda-test quant-ref, modelopt, glue and smoke pass in both builds. Before fcb45bde, modelopt failed in the reduce build with CUDA_ERROR_ILLEGAL_ADDRESS.
  • test-cuda-host: 465 of 465.

Not run. A real Ampere or Ada card. The reduce build follows the same plan and kernels as one, but not sm_89's SASS. An update on the sm_89 receipt follows separately.

@ashhart The sm_89 update: the same checks on a real Ada card. RTX 4090 (sm_89, no clusters), Windows 11, CUDA 13.3, -Dsm=89, nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Lightning-30B-A3B-NVFP4 with its MTP head. main doesn't build on Windows yet, so this is #901's commits on #836 (5e1c3fea).

The crash, before and after. serve --parallel 2 --prompt-cache-gib 0 with TF_CUDA_SEGMENTS=2. With a prompt cache the server keeps states, and segments don't run.

  • At 663a6424: the first prompt over 2,048 tokens ends reason=error (CudaFailed).
  • At fcb45bde: every prompt passes, and the log has no CUDA errors.

Boundaries. Templated chat prompts of exactly 254, 255, 256, 257, 511, 512, 2,047, 2,048, 2,049, 2,050 and 4,097 tokens, 48 greedy tokens each. Six server configurations: one segment, two segments, and drafts off, each with the prompt cache on and off.

Comparison Equal
two segments vs one 11 of 11 (cache on), 11 of 11 (cache off)
--no-drafts vs drafts 11 of 11, 11 of 11
cache on vs cache off 33 of 33
resumed vs fresh (255, 256, 2,049 sent again) 3 of 3 in each configuration
concurrent vs solo (255 beside 2,049, 256 beside 4,097) 4 of 4 in each configuration

Earlier on this card, at 663a6424 (one segment, --context 16384 --parallel 2): bench_concurrent --alone --serial was 36 of 36, and drafted vs "draft": false was 10 of 10 at T 0 and T 0.7.

Tests.

  • tf-cuda-test quant-ref, modelopt (4 of 4), glue and smoke pass at fcb45bde.
  • zig build test: 743 of 757 passed, 14 skipped.
  • test-cuda-host: 469 of 474 passed, 5 skipped.

One overlap with #836. #836 already gives those modelopt lane checks a partials buffer. Its e5bb3bca added the same fix while bringing the GPU suites to sm_89, so fcb45bde conflicts with it in zig/tests/cuda/modelopt_tests.zig. Either version works. Whichever lands second should take the other's.

Not run: Ampere (sm_80/86), and Linux on Ada.

1.0.12 names ModelOpt's floor (modeloptRefusal) at sm_90; this branch reduces split-K sums without clusters, so the
floor is now sm_80, where FP8 and NVFP4 still decode to bf16 for mma.sync. lane_part follows main's six new scratch
buffers, and covers the latent MoE's two projections, whose lane calls now pass it.

Merged main (1.0.12) at ee28794b. Two things changed with it:

  • The floor. 1.0.12 names ModelOpt's floor in modeloptRefusal at sm_90. This branch reduces the split-K sums without clusters, so the floor is now sm_80, where FP8 and NVFP4 still decode to bf16 for mma.sync. The test admits 80, 86, 89 and up and refuses 70 and 75.
  • The latent MoE. cuda_latent.zig's two lane calls (fc1_latent_proj, fc2_latent_proj) passed no partials buffer, the same case as the segments. They now pass o.part, and lane_part is sized for their shapes too. lane_part sits after main's six new scratch buffers.

Checks on the 5090, the same two builds as before (clusters off, and the branch as pushed):

  • tensorfold segments, the same ten prompts at 1 to 4 segments: all 40 state hashes equal one segment's, and the two builds' hashes are equal.
  • tf-cuda-test quant-ref, modelopt, glue (1,293 of 1,293) and smoke pass in both. test-cuda-host: 843 of 843.
  • Served, --segments 4: the same 56 chat replies equal across the reduce build, the cluster build and the cache-off build, and equal to main at 46a08c18 served the same way.

The latent path was not run: no latent checkpoint reaches main's Nemotron family on this card.

One note outside this PR: GLM's CUDA family (glm/cuda_forward.zig:50) loads the lane and passes no partials either, so below sm_90 it would hit the same null pointer. GLM serves on GB10s, so it may never matter, but a GLM receipt below sm_90 would need it.

…s its buffers' ck8

1.0.12's Forward.init rebuilds its Ops from the bound buffers to carry their e4m3 rows (ck8), which dropped the
partials buffer the engine and each segment pass in: on a card without clusters the first prompt's lane matmul
reduced through a null pointer (CUDA_ERROR_LAUNCH_FAILED on an RTX 4090). It now takes the same buffers'
lane_part. tf-cuda-test modelopt runs its lane rows from sm_80, the floor this branch sets, instead of sm_90.

@ashhart One more fix after the 1.0.12 merge, found on the real sm_89 card: 0b60b397.

What broke. 1.0.12's Forward.init (cuda_forward.zig:72) rebuilds its Ops from the bound buffers to carry their ck8, and that dropped .part. So every forward's lane matmul got no partials buffer, whatever the engine or a segment passed in. On the RTX 4090 at ee28794b, tensorfold run on Lightning NVFP4 fails on the first prompt with CUDA_ERROR_LAUNCH_FAILED. The 5090's clusters-off build didn't reach this. The Ops now takes the same buffers' lane_part, as it takes their ck8.

tf-cuda-test modelopt. It still skipped its lane rows below sm_90, so on an Ada card it never ran the reduce path. It now runs them from sm_80, the floor this branch sets.

Checks at 0b60b397 on the RTX 4090. Windows build: the tree is 46a08c18 with #836 merged in locally and this branch's diff applied. Checkpoint nvidia/NVIDIA-Nemotron-3.5-Lightning-30B-A3B-NVFP4, its MTP head drafting.

Check Result
tf-cuda-test quant-ref, modelopt, glue, smoke all pass, none skipped. modelopt's fp8 and bf16 lane rows now run here
tensorfold segments, the ten prompts of 255 to 8,193 tokens at 1 to 4 segments 80 of 80 state, head, logits, hidden and reply hashes equal one segment's
tensorfold widths 47 of 47 kept rows equal serial, widths 1 to 16
tensorfold lanes, four prompts of 255, 256, 2,049 and 4,097 tokens, together vs --solo 4 of 4 equal
tensorfold run, MTP drafts vs --no-drafts, 256- and 2,049-token prompts equal token SHAs (b922865f906c, 36bf4e14f418)
test-cuda-host the Nemotron tests pass, the new floor test included

test-cuda-host also fails one test, cuda_identity's snapshot-blob check. That's Windows symlinks in 1.0.12's own code, not this branch. The lean check reports 524 problems, as on main; zig fmt is clean.

Not run: the latent MoE path (no latent checkpoint fits this card) and Ampere.

A correction to my merge note above. Its 5090 checks after the 1.0.12 merge did not run the reduce path. 1.0.12 reformatted qmmf.Lane.load, so my edit that turns clusters off matched nothing, and both builds kept clusters on. That is why they missed the Forward.init bug that 0b60b397 fixes. The checks at fcb45bde, before the merge, did run clusters off.

Rerun on the 5090 with clusters really off (the edit checked before building):

  • At ee28794b (the merge, before 0b60b397): tensorfold segments on the 2,049-token prompt fails with CUDA_ERROR_ILLEGAL_ADDRESS, as on the 4090.
  • At 0b60b397:
    • tensorfold segments, the ten prompts of 255 to 8,193 tokens at 1 to 4 segments: all 40 state hashes equal one segment's, and every reply's tokens are the same at every segment count. Both equal the cluster build's.
    • tf-cuda-test quant-ref, modelopt, glue (1,293 of 1,293) and smoke pass, clusters off and on.
    • Served, --segments 4: the same 56 chat replies (drafted against "draft": false, greedy and seeded, resumed against fresh, concurrent against solo) are equal across the clusters-off build, the cluster build and the clusters-off build with no prompt cache, and equal to main at 46a08c18.

Thanks @BobClawblaw for correcting the ineffective clusters-off edit and rerunning both sides. The actual failure before 0b60b39 and the corrected 56-reply comparison are the useful controls; the earlier merged-head run cannot support that reduction claim.

We retained your segment, Forward and latent partial-buffer wiring, and added a common pre-launch refusal when a reduction needs missing storage. Host controls cover that guard without changing valid cluster/fused dispatch. Ampere and the latent checkpoint path remain unqualified by these receipts. The final integrated Windows and device runs still need their own results.
