Custom updates

This extension targets Bootstrap 4.6.2, the final official Bootstrap 4 release. The original Bootstrap CSS, component Sass sources and JavaScript remain unchanged. Large-screen rules are delivered in a separate stylesheet.

Breakpoint Minimum viewport width Container maximum width
xxl 1400px 1320px
xxxl 1600px 1540px
xxxxl 2000px 1800px

Load the extension after the official Bootstrap 4.6.2 stylesheet:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="dist/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="dist/css/bootstrap-custom-breakpoints.min.css">
<link rel="stylesheet" href="dist/css/bootstrap-custom-styles.min.css">

Use the standard Bootstrap 4 naming conventions with the new breakpoint suffixes:

<div class="container">
  <div class="row row-cols-1 row-cols-md-2 row-cols-xxl-3 row-cols-xxxl-4 row-cols-xxxxl-6">
    <div class="col">Content</div>
  </div>
  <div class="row">
    <div class="col-md-6 col-xxl-4 col-xxxl-3 col-xxxxl-2">Responsive column</div>
    <div class="col-xxl">Equal-width column</div>
    <div class="col-xxl-auto">Content-width column</div>
  </div>
  <div class="d-none d-xxl-block d-xxxxl-flex mt-xxxl-3">Large-screen content</div>
</div>

The extension supplies responsive containers, numeric/equal/automatic columns, offsets, ordering, row column counts, display, flex, spacing, text alignment and additional utility classes. At the new breakpoints, .container and existing responsive containers expand to the maximum widths above; .container-fluid stays fluid. Below 1400px, existing Bootstrap classes retain their original behavior. New column classes stack at full width below their breakpoint unless another Bootstrap column class applies. The extension applies to screen media only, preserving Bootstrap's print behavior.

The separate dist/css/bootstrap-custom-styles.css file contains the project's optional .border-1 through .border-5 (1px through 5px) and .rounded-1 through .rounded-5 (0.25rem, 0.375rem, 0.5rem, 1rem and 2rem) utilities, plus .rounded-xl and .rounded-xxl. It is not required for the breakpoint extension.

Build and verify only the extensions

The extension has its own locked build dependencies and uses Dart Sass. Node.js 20 or later is required; CI verifies Node.js 22 and 24. The legacy upstream build commands are separate from this workflow.

npm ci --prefix build/custom-breakpoints
npm run css-custom
npm --prefix build/custom-breakpoints run lint
npm exec --prefix build/custom-breakpoints -- playwright install chromium
npm run test-custom

For local testing with an installed Chrome or Edge, set PLAYWRIGHT_CHANNEL to chrome or msedge instead of downloading Chromium. CI installs Chromium and its Linux dependencies automatically.

npm run css-custom writes only the breakpoint and custom style sheets, their minified variants and source maps. It does not rebuild or overwrite any original Bootstrap CSS or JavaScript. The tests cover the expanded and minified variants, breakpoint boundaries, original styles, grid behavior, display precedence, borders, radii and printing, and verify that the 12 original CSS/map files remain byte-for-byte unchanged during the build.

The Custom CSS GitHub Actions workflow also checks that committed generated artifacts match a clean build. Regenerate and commit all extension artifacts whenever the extension source or build dependencies change.

We provide compiled CSS and JS (bootstrap.*), as well as compiled and minified CSS and JS (bootstrap.min.*). Source maps (bootstrap.*.map) are available for use with certain browsers' developer tools. Bundled JS files (bootstrap.bundle.js and minified bootstrap.bundle.min.js) include Popper, but not jQuery.

Documentation

Bootstrap's documentation, included in this repo in the root directory, is built with Hugo and publicly hosted on GitHub Pages at https://getbootstrap.com/. The docs may also be run locally.

Documentation search is powered by Algolia's DocSearch. Working on our search? Be sure to set debug: true in site/assets/js/search.js.

Running documentation locally

  1. Run npm install to install the Node.js dependencies, including Hugo (the site builder).
  2. Run npm run test (or a specific npm script) to rebuild distributed CSS and JavaScript files, as well as our docs assets.
  3. Run npm start to compile CSS and JavaScript files, generate our docs, and watch for changes.
  4. Open http://localhost:9001/ in your browser, and voilà.

Learn more about using Hugo by reading its documentation.

Contributing

Please read through our contributing guidelines. Included are directions for opening issues, coding standards, and notes on development.

Moreover, if your pull request contains JavaScript patches or features, you must include relevant unit tests. All HTML and CSS should conform to the Code Guide, maintained by Mark Otto.

Versioning

For transparency into our release cycle and in striving to maintain backward compatibility, Bootstrap is maintained under the Semantic Versioning guidelines. Sometimes we screw up, but we adhere to those rules whenever possible.

See the Releases section of our GitHub project for changelogs for each release version of Bootstrap. Release announcement posts on the official Bootstrap blog contain summaries of the most noteworthy changes made in each release.
